IN PERSON: Apache Kafka® x Apache Iceberg x Apache Flink®
2025-05-07 · 18:00
***IMPORTANT: IF YOU RSVP here you don't need to also RSVP to London Kafka Group.*** Date and Time: 🗓️ Wednesday 7th May, ⏰ 18:00 - 21:00 PM 🕘 Venue: Snowflake, One Crown Place, London EC2A 4EF, U.K. 5th & 6th floors · London Schedule:
🎙️ \~Talk 1\~ Mastering real-time anomaly detection, Olena Kutsenko, Staff Developer Advocate, Confluent Abstract: Detecting problems as they happen is essential in today's fast-moving world. This talk shows how to build a simple, powerful system for real-time anomaly detection in live data. We'll use Apache Kafka for streaming data, Apache Flink for processing it in real time, and various models to detect unusual patterns. Whether it's monitoring systems, or tracking IoT devices, this solution is flexible and reliable. We'll start by exploring how Kafka helps collect and manage fast-moving data streams. Then, we'll demonstrate how Flink processes this data in real time and integrates anomaly detection models to uncover events as they occur. We'll dive into the details of how ARIMA and LSTM work, so even if you’re not into mathematics, you can still understand what happens behind the scenes! This talk is ideal for anyone looking to monitor anomalies in real-time data streams. 🗣️ Speaker 1: Olena is a Staff Developer Advocate at Confluent and a recognized expert in data streaming and analytics. With two decades of experience in software engineering, she has built mission-critical applications, led high-performing teams, and driven large-scale technology adoption at industry leaders like Nokia, HERE Technologies, AWS, and Aiven. 🎙️ \~Talk 2\~ Iced Kaf-fee: Chilling Kafka Data into Iceberg Tables, Danica Fine, Lead Developer Advocate, Open Source at Snowflake Abstract: Have piping-hot, real-time data in Apache Kafka® but want to chill it down into Apache Iceberg™ tables? Let’s see how we can craft the perfect cup of “Iced Kaf-fee” for you and your needs! We’ll start by grinding through the motivation for moving data from Kafka topics into Iceberg tables, exploring the benefits that doing so has to offer your analytics workflows. From there, we’ll open up the menu of options available to cool down your streams, including Apache Flink®, Apache Spark™, and Kafka Connect. Each brewing method has its own recipe, so we’ll compare their pros and cons, walk through use cases for each, and highlight when you might prefer a strong Spark roast over a smooth Flink blend—or maybe a Connect cold brew. Plus, we’ll share a sneak peek at future innovations that are percolating in the community to make sinking your Kafka data into Iceberg even easier. By the end of the session, you’ll have everything you need to whip up the perfect pipeline and serve up your “Iced Kaf-fee” with confidence. 🗣️ Speaker 2: Danica began her career as a software engineer in financial services and pivoted to developer relations, where she focussed primarily on open source technologies under the Apache Software Foundation umbrella such as Apache Kafka and Apache Flink. She now leads the open source advocacy efforts at Snowflake, supporting Apache Iceberg and Apache Polaris (incubating). 🎙️ \~Talk 3\~ Observing all the things: Apache Kafka® and Apache Flink® with OpenTelemetry, Mehreen Tahir Software Engineer, New Relic 🗣️ Speaker 3: Mehreen specializes in machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence. We've all heard about this concept - you should run your app in more than one zone, more than one region, more than one... cloud? But how can this be done, without a major re-architecture of every component of every system? Let me take you through a real world implementation, where the 2 clouds were AWS and GCP, and the app - a major platform that has to deal with images. We'll look into the infra, networking and DNS setup, how to configure data availability and consistency, and what happened when we actually switched dual run in production. Whether you need multi-cloud for resilience, for serving customers with different requirements, or you just want to see who's mad enough to implement this - this talk is for you. 7:15 PM: Alessandro De Maria - Code & Reload: A Call of Duty "Zombie mode" inspired approach to Technical Debt in Startups In this talk, we'll explore the parallels between surviving Call of Duty's Zombie mode and managing technical debt in startups. In-PERSON: Apache Kafka® x Kong Meetup in London
2025-03-27 · 18:00
Join us for an Apache Kafka® x Kong meetup on Thursday, March 27th from 6:00pm in London hosted by TurinTech AI! 📍Venue: TurinTech AI 1 Finsbury Ave, City of London, London EC2M 2PF · London IMPORTANT: If you RSVP on the this page, you don't need to RSVP on Kong London meetup page. 🗓 Agenda:
💡 Speaker One: Johannes Brännström, Staff Solutions Engineer, Kong Title of Talk: Extending the worlds most used API platform to Kafka -- Why it matters, what's here today, what's coming and how to learn more. Abstract: In this talk, we’ll explore how Kong facilitates the way Kafka users interact with both synchronous and asynchronous APIs. Through the lens of example companies, we'll showcase how Kong helps manage and optimize their API ecosystems, balancing the needs for real-time event streaming with traditional API patterns. Attendees will gain an understanding of Kong’s current capabilities for Kafka integration, highlighting key features that enable smooth API management, enhanced scalability, and reliability. We'll also offer ways for you to get first-hand experience. Looking ahead, we’ll share exciting developments on the horizon, including upcoming features, enhancements that will further empower Kafka users as well as learn more. Bio: Joining Kong from MongoDB & Red Hat Johannes is passionate about agile, modern application architecture and continuous delivery in all areas required to build great software. 💡 Speaker Two: Harry Kimpel, Principal Developer Relations Engineer, New Relic Title of Talk: Unlock full end-to-end tracing through Kong and Kafka with OpenTelemetry Abstract: Ideally, you should be using distributed tracing to trace requests through your system, but Kafka decouples producers and consumers, which means there are no direct transactions to trace between them. Kafka also uses asynchronous processes, which have implicit, not explicit, dependencies. Another key component of such an architecture is securing and exposing endpoints with a powerful platform such as Kong. All of this makes it challenging to understand how your microservices are working together. However, it is possible to observe your Kong Gateway interactions and Kafka-based applications with distributed tracing and OpenTelemetry. You can then analyze and visualize your traces in an open source distributed tracing tool like Jaeger or a full observability platform like New Relic. In this talk I will leverage a simple application to show how you can achieve this. Bio: Passionate software craftsman with 25+ years experience in a broad spectrum of development technologies and platforms. Mostly focusing on .NET/C#, the Microsoft development stack and cloud-native software architectures. Key focus also on Microsoft Azure as well as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Observability, monitoring and securing these environments are key aspects. Currently extremely interested in the Distributed Application Runtime (Dapr). *** DISCLAIMER NOTE: We are unable to cater for any attendees under the age of 18. In this session, let me tell you the surprises, challenges, and lessons learned from building an AI-powered code reviewer and what it tells us about the current state of LLM technologies. *** Sponsors ☁️ 💫 aleios We help startups disrupt and large organisations to remain competitive using the best of Cloud-Native, Serverless. Ricardo Sueiras
– Principal Open Source | AWS Cloud Practitioner
@ AWS
Next generation developer tools that incorporate generative AI are everywhere, but how good are they, and. more importantly, how useful. In this talk I am going to share what I have learned from using these tools over the last 12 months. I will cover the kinds of day-to-day scenarios and use cases I am finding them useful for, how they are helping me address some of my developer problems, and tips I have learned to more effectively use these tools. This session contains live coding/demos that will help you see this in action. |
