Title & Speakers Event

Dear all,

January was a blast, we had amazing talks on the meetup and delivered a Big Data workshop. It will be hard to beat, but we will try by bringing two new talks in a venue hosted by Shiftmove.

The evening

18:30 - Warming up and networking chat 18:45 - Welcome talk

19:00 - 19:45 - Renato Losio // Balancing Acts: A Developer’s Journey with RDS

The era when a web application could only choose RDS for MySQL as a relational database on AWS is long gone. Today, an array of engines and deployment options, including RDS, Aurora, and serverless choices, is available. AWS provides many managed databases, each offering multiple options, pricing models, and deployment patterns: how does one strike a balance between maintaining a simple architecture and succumbing to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)? When is it beneficial to use a serverless option? We will conclude with a simple unconventional demo.

About Renato: Renato has extensive experience as a cloud architect, tech lead, and cloud services specialist. Currently, he lives between Trieste and Berlin and works remotely as a principal cloud architect. His primary areas of interest include cloud services and relational databases. He is an editor at InfoQ and a recognized AWS Data Hero.

19:45 - 20:15 - Short break with snacks and drinks

20:15 - 21:00 - Johannes Langer & Miha Zeleznikar // How Deutsche Bahn Uses MLOps on Amazon SageMaker to Stay Ahead of Fraudsters

Deutsche Bahn, the German national railway company, is the second-largest transport company in the world and the largest railway operator and infrastructure owner in Europe. Annually, the company sells over 100 million tickets online and has prioritised not only preventing fraud, but also ensuring explainability and ethical use of AI in its processes. By training and deploying machine learning models through Amazon SageMaker, Deutsche Bahn built a solution that is both effective and scalable while ensuring the security of their ticket transactions. Join us to learn how Deutsche Bahn has implemented their fraud prevention solution leveraging MLOps practices on Amazon SageMaker to serve 300k transactions per day in under 250ms.

About Johannes: Johannes is a Senior Solutions Architect at AWS, working with enterprise customers in Germany. Johannes is passionate about applying machine learning to solve real business problems. In his personal life, Johannes enjoys working on home improvement projects and spending time outdoors with his family. About Miha: Miha is Lead Enterprise Architect at DB Systel. He specializes in leveraging the power of machine learning to drive innovation and efficiency across the organization. With a keen focus on building robust, scalable cloud solutions, his work centers on transforming complex business challenges into actionable data-driven strategies.

Berlin AWS User Group Meetup - February 2024

2024 has just begun and we are thrilled to announce that the AWS User Group Workshops are back! 🤩 Following the success of our previous workshop, we are excited to bring you another workshop. 🙌🏽 This time, we'll be hosted at the beautiful office of Adesso SE and we have a team of AWS Solution Architects to educate you on the topic. Let's make the most of this opportunity and unlock the true potential of Big Data Analytics with AWS!

Creating Business Value from Big Data Analytics with AWS

Data volumes are increasing at an unprecedented rate, exploding from terabytes to petabytes and sometimes exabytes of data. Traditional on-premises data analytics approaches can't handle these data volumes because they don't scale well enough and are too expensive. At the same time, data can be analysed to gain competitive insights, to support decision making and to train AI applications.

In this workshop led by AWS Solution Architects, participants will learn about data architecture fundamentals and get deep hands-on experience with building a data lake on AWS, using AWS analytics services such as Glue, Athena, Lake Formation, Kinesis, and QuickSight.

Participants need foundational hands-on experience with AWS and must bring their own laptop with AWS CLI installed. Sandbox AWS accounts for running workshop labs will be provided.

When? 25th of January\, Thursday \| 15:00 - 20:00 Where? Adesso SE: Prinzenstraße 34, Berlin How? Fill out this form to apply. Limited seats are available. You can only participate in the workshop if you receive a confirmation mail from us. You need to bring your own laptop to this workshop. Important: Participation is free of charge. Your AWS resource usage is also covered. You will be provided a sandbox AWS account. Therefore, you don't need an AWS account this time!

🍕 Our beloved host sponsors food and beverages 🥤 So you can rely on light meals provided for the length of the workshop. 😊

For additional questions and suggestions, feel free to contact us on our LinkedIn page. Thank you for your interest - and we look forward to meeting you by the end of the month!

The evening

18:30 - Warming up and networking chat 18:45 - Welcome talk

19:00 - 19:45 - Daniel Ciaglia // Lessons learned from running Terraform at reasonable scale

Running Terraform at scale brings its own challenges. Daniel will talk about individual service stacks, information exchange and using Weavework's Terraform Controller in combination with boring-registry/boring-registry Terraform module and provider registry.

About Daniel: Freelance Consultant on Cloud-Native systems, Platform Engineering, DevOps, SRE and DeveloperExperience. He built TIER Mobility's Cloud Infrastructure and was a kreuzwerker Consultant before.

19:45 - 20:15 - Short break with snacks and drinks

20:15 - 21:00 - John Nguyen // Build your DevOps Suite fully on AWS with AWS CDK

With increasing number of companies moving to AWS, many use the CodeSuite for their CI/CD needs. However, while CodePipeline is the platform for this process, it may not be the most user-friendly. In this talk, I aim to help you build a flexible CodePipeline with CDK for your Monorepo in NodeJS. Please note that this talk requires some knowledge of developing with AWS CDK.

About John: Fullstack engineer with a knack for whipping up code recipes using his secret ingredients: a dash of JavaScript, a pinch of Python, and a whole lot of serverless magic.
