How do predatory nematodes avoid cannibalising their own offspring? In this episode, we explore a remarkable study that uncovers a peptide-based self-recognition system in Pristionchus pacificus. This system hinges on a single hypervariable peptide, SELF-1, which allows individuals to distinguish between kin and non-kin—preventing self-killing but enabling predation on rivals.

We discuss:

The discovery and characterisation of the self-1 gene How a single amino acid change can disrupt recognition The role of hypervariable C-terminal sequences in defining identity CRISPR-Cas9 experiments to map and manipulate self-recognition Why this system may represent a new form of species- and strain-specific recognition in the animal kingdom

📖 Based on the research article: “Small peptide–mediated self-recognition prevents cannibalism in predatory nematodes” James W. Lightfoot, Martin Wilecki, Christian Rödelsperger, et al. Published in Science (2019). 🔗 https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aav9856

TALKS

[Talk 1]: 10x Easier Development for Spark and Python using Databricks Connect! by Martin Grund Databricks Connect allows customers to connect to Databricks natively using Python, Scala, or R from any IDEs and data applications leveraging the power of serverless Spark. Using the serverless Spark platform has never been easier. All you need to connect to Spark is a Databricks workspace and user credential, and within seconds, you can leverage the full elasticity of the serverless Spark infrastructure. In this talk, Martin Grund, Principal Engineer at Databricks will walk you through live examples of developing and running applications using DB Connect with Databricks serverless Spark directly from different applications like Ploty, RStudio, integration testing, or even any other hosted notebook offering. Using Databricks Spark instantaneously from anywhere will dramatically improve your developer and application experience.

[Talk 2]: Orchestrating and Scaling Marketing Campaigns using Databricks & MLflow by Christian te Riet and Ivan Liono

In this talk, Christian te Riet and Ivan Liono will explore how ABN AMRO leverages Databricks and MLflow to effectively scale data-driven marketing campaigns. By centralizing and automating the creation of machine learning models for marketing campaigns, they aim to deliver more personalized experiences, boost conversion rates, and reduce operational costs. Their system generates uplift, propensity-to-buy, and churn models for various products (or product groups), simplifying model management and compliance.

Christian and Ivan will share insights from both the data science and engineering perspectives, discussing their technical implementation, design decisions, and the successes and challenges they’ve encountered. This session will inspire attendees and invite feedback, offering practical takeaways for anyone looking to implement similar solutions.

NOTE: Since we can only host a limited amount of attendees for this meetup event, if you cannot join the event, update your status to "not going" so you can give your spot to the folks on the waitlist. Thanks for your help!

DIRECTIONS

Address: Databricks Amsterdam Office Barbara Strozzilaan 350 2nd floor, Eurocenter Amsterdam 1083 HN Amsterdam

By Bike If you’re already in Amsterdam or nearby, biking is a convenient option. Use Google Maps or a similar app for a bike-friendly route. Most paths will guide you to the business district near Amsterdam RAI Station. Once you arrive at Barbara Strozzilaan, look for the Eurocenter Amsterdam building at number 350. The Databricks office is on the 2nd floor.

By Train & Metro Take a train or metro to Amsterdam RAI Station (many intercity and local trains stop here). Exit the station and follow signs toward Barbara Strozzilaan - it’s roughly a 5–10 minute walk. Databricks is located at Barbara Strozzilaan 350, in the Eurocenter Amsterdam building, on the 2nd floor.

By Tram or Bus Tram: Lines such as 4 and 12 typically serve the Amsterdam RAI area (check current schedules). Bus: Multiple bus routes also stop near Amsterdam RAI Station (e.g., 62, 65, 125, depending on direction).

Driving value forward: rapid development to real-world impact

This is 100% non-profit. The 15€ sign up fee for everyone is only to minimize last-minute cancellations. The total sum goes to a bar-tap that everyone can use to order drinks until the amount is used up. ‼️NO REFUNDS‼️

‼️Please don't just show up without RSVPing here and paying the 15€. We have a separate room that has limited capacity and a specific drinks agreement with the bar - so splitting up the bill won't become a mess.‼️

Small update on how your money get's used from May 2024 onwards: As of this month, meetup.com has started charging me 34€ instead of 16€ per month. I've decided to distribute this fee evenly among all us participants every month. Example: In the last 12 meetups, the average number of attendees was 17. With 17 attendees I would effectively collect 230€ (after fees). I would now substract 34€ leaving us with 196€ that go to the bar. 15% get's tipped to the wait staff, in this case 30€, leaving us with 166€ effectively to order drinks. Hope everyone is cool with this system. :)

Last Mile Delivery Meetup: Bridging the Gap Between Letters and Parcels
Unravelling SAAS 2024-09-03 · 16:30

IMPORTANT: You can only register for this event on Eventbrite, here: https://Sept2024LNETM.eventbrite.co.uk/

Despite its ubiquity, the SAAS business model faces headwinds with the challenging business environment, rise in AI-based custom software development and technical issues related to resilience & data privacy.

While software service models for software have been around since the 1960’s, Software-as-a-Service really only became a recognised as an industry term in the early 2000’s and has grown in popularity, becoming the main form of software application deployment by 2023.

The thesis of this discussion is that many people have forgotten that there is a lot that sits underneath the day-to-day interface of SAAS applications, such as underlying technologies, data infrastructure, pricing strategies, legal frameworks, etc.. and what that actually means for organisations who have grown dependent on this software business model.

We have brought together a combination of leading SAAS experts for our discussion, including:

  • Christian Nentwich (Founder of Duco)
  • Graham Russell (Market Intelligence Director at Own Company)
  • Griffin Parry (CEO & Co-Founder of M3ter)
  • Itxaso del Palacio (Partner at Notion Capital)

Graham will provide a short talk to position the discussion, which will be moderated by Nathan O'Reilly who is an expert in enterprise transformation.

HighlightsDrake took home a bag of Billboard Music Awards, but Ozuna and Lauren Daigle represent for the Latin and CCM fansMission   Good morning, it’s Jason here at Chartmetric with your 3-minute Data Dump where we upload charts, artists and playlists into your brain so you can stay up on the latest in the music data world.FYI - the Chartmetric team will be in Nashville for the Music Biz Conference next week, so if you’re there, please say hello at our Wednesday night panel, but if not, the podcast will be back on Friday May 10th.DateThis is your Data Dump for Friday May 3rd 2019.Billboard Music Awards 2019: Ozuna & Lauren DaigleThe 2019 Billboard Music Awards, or BBMAs, happened on Wednesday night, and Drake took home the most awards with 12 and Cardi B showing up in 18 categories with 21 nominations total. As a US-based company with the finalists determined by their own private award process, it would make sense that Billboard heavily decorated two of the biggest chart-topping artists in the English-speaking West. But what about winners that are also big in their own right, but just catering to a different segment of the population? Two of those winners are Puerto Rico’s Ozuna and Louisiana native Lauren Daigle. Ozuna is now one of Latin music’s biggest reggaetón artists and Daigle has risen to become a star in the Contemporary Christian Music genre. It’s certainly arguable that neither artist should be put into a box, so to say, but the nature of the Billboard Award categories they won in- Top Latin Artist/Album/Song for Ozuna and Top Christian Artist/Album/Song for Daigle- certainly encourage that kind of thinking. So in the data, it’s interesting to see how these conceptualizations play out, and where it doesn’t seem to matter much. For example, with Ozuna, his mostly Spanish language content obviously plays towards Latin-American areas: his top five Spotify monthly listener cities are Mexico City, Santiago, Madrid, Buenos Aires and Lima. With Daigle, hers are Dallas, Paris, Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles. A 2015 Gallup poll found that about 75% of the US identify as Christian, so it would make sense that Daigle plays best stateside, but a strong trend in Paris over the last few months is curious. In the last three months alone, she grew her unique monthly listeners over 400% to 105K, while in the same time period, the other four top cities grew less than 30%.Evidence of her success in the French-speaking capital is the fact that she was added to Paris-based Deezer Music’s #1 playlist- Les titres du moment with 9.8M fans- on April 6th, almost as a recognition that her popularity was cross-platform and not limited to just Spotify. For Ozuna, while most of his top YouTube countries are Spanish-speaking (such as Mexico, Argentina and Colombia), his second biggest country is the United States at almost 16% of his Daily Views at 2.8M.With the 2017 US Census reporting that 13% or almost 40M Americans speak Spanish, it makes sense that even a mostly English-speaking country outranks other Spanish-speaking countries due to sheer population size. For example, Ozuna’s third biggest YouTube country, Argentina, has a total population of 45M, which is only slightly bigger than the US Spanish-speaking population at almost 40M.So all of this to say that when targeting an artist’s demographic, it usually pays off to understand their market size and where they are, because some data trends are expected but sometimes, quite unexpected.OutroThat’s it for your Daily Data Dump for Friday May 3rd 2019.
