Meetup #13
2025-05-27 · 17:00
Hello everyone! As always a big thank you to all who attended our first Data & AI London meet up of the year in March.. Of course a big thank you to Katia Gil Guzman of OpenAI too for taking the time to join us and kick off the year of meet ups perfectly! Now its time to keep things rolling and announce our next event for May! For this event we welcome back one of the fan favourites Holly Smith from Databricks who gave an awesome talk last year and Tom Stuart founding engineer of PortiaAI, an open source framework that allows developers to spin up AI agents. Tom Stuart \| Founding Engineer @ PortiaAI Architecting multi agent systems for reliability 2025 is purportedly the year of Agents, autonomous systems able to accomplish a vast swathe of tasks which were previously unheard of for AI. At the same time, many naysayers are citing difficulties in running agents in production due to reliability concerns. In this talk, we'll look at some of the difficulties in creating these systems, and what the trends are in the industry that address them, as well as our own experience building these systems at Portia AI. About me Tom is the founding engineer at Portia AI, helping to build a multi-agent SDK with a strong focus on reliability and authentication. Before founding Portia, he served as CTO at a fintech startup and has held a range of roles across the software industry — including working on the Security team at Monzo. His experience spans infrastructure, product, and leadership, all with a deep emphasis on building secure, scalable systems. Holly Smith \| Staff Developer Advocate @ Databricks The Metadata Marathon: How Three Storage Projects are Racing Forward With the enormous amount of discussion about open storage formats between nerds and even not-nerds, it can be hard to keep track of who’s doing what and how this actually makes any impact on day to day data projects. I want us to take a closer look at the three big projects in this space; Delta, Hudi and Iceberg. They’re all trying to solve for similar data problems and have tackled the various challenges in different ways. This talk with start with the very basics of how we got here, what the history is before diving deep into the underlying tech, their roadmaps and their impacts on the data landscape as a whole. About me Holly Smith is a multi award winning Data and AI expert who has over a decade of experience working with Data and AI teams in a variety of capacities from individual contributors all the way up to leadership. In her role at Databricks she has worked with many multi national companies as they embark on their journey to the cutting edge of data. She is a renowned public speaker, teacher and minority in tech advocate. Please aim to arrive at 6pm. The talks will start around 6.30pm (give or take a few mins) and there will be pizza and refreshments as always on arrival :) Look forward to seeing you all soon! |

Django London Meetup May
2024-05-15 · 17:15
May edition! We will be at Kraken Tech (Octopus Energy Group) London office! Talks: Layered Django project structure for large-scale collaboration by Çağıl Uluşahin Sönmez How can hundreds of engineers collaborate on the same codebase without chaos and build a successful business? This talk will explore the challenges encountered by a large team of engineers working on a complex codebase, and how to effectively manage the process of building a successful tech business. The key to success lies in organising the codebase in a clear and concise manner, enabling easy comprehension and modification by team members. Failure to do so can lead to confusion and hinder progress, potentially resulting in an unsuccessful project. This talk will specifically focus on organising a Django project using a layered architecture. This involves structuring the codebase into distinct layers, each with a unique purpose, to facilitate separation of concerns. In an MVC framework, this typically involves separating the data, domain, application, and interface layers. By understanding the fundamentals of layered architecture and applying these principles to future projects, attendees will learn how to effectively manage complex codebases and successfully build thriving businesses with technology. Çağıl is a software engineer based in London. She has been working with Python and Django since 2008. Currently she is working as a Lead Backend Engineer at Kraken Tech. She is vice president in Django Software Foundation, co-organiser of London Django Meetup, Pycon Turkey, DjangoGirls Turkey, and a PSF managing member. Crabs in Snakes! by David Seddon Python is great for productivity and readability. Rust is great if you want things to run really fast. Isn’t it a shame we can’t use both in the same program? It turns out we can! Learn how, with the help of some clever libraries, we can write compiled Python modules in Rust. We’ll start by introducing Rust itself. It’s a very different language to Python with a whole new way of thinking. Along the way, we’ll meet Cargo, Rust’s excellent package manager. Then we’ll see how we can plumb Rust code into Python as a native extension module, and distribute it as a wheel. We’ll do this using Py03 and Maturin. You don’t need to know anything about Rust, extension modules or packaging - this will give you the fundamentals. By the end, you will know how to get started putting the power of Rust inside your Python programs. David Seddon works in London at Kraken Tech, the technology tentacle of Octopus Energy. There, he works on a very large Django monolith consisting of tens of thousands of Python modules. He’s also a member of the Django Software Foundation. He loves thinking about and teaching software design, in particular domain modelling and application architecture. He is the creator of Import Linter, an open-source tool to check your Python project is following a set of architectural rules you define. He blogs at https://seddonym.me. -------- To propose a talk for our events, fill in our speaker form. If your company is interested - please DM♥ AGENDA
Generative AI has come a long way in the past few months. We all have seen chatbots doing things we couldn't have dreamt of a few years back. Generative AI is today able to process text, images, code and even speech in ways that can help users be more efficient and creative. For Users, it can access a vast source of information to guide them at work and get more done faster. For Developers, it can explain code snippets, fix your code, help you navigate a new code base or even write tests! The possibilities are endless. In this talk, you are going to learn about Google's new Generative AI platform Vertex AI, the latest tools (Generative AI Studio) and APIs to foundational models (PaLM2, Imagen, Codey and Chirp), just so you can start building AI-enabled Applications and powerful chatbots. AI's current progress and future is truly exciting!
Have you ever seen futuristic films or TV series where humans speak or interact with business intelligence systems using natural language input or even hand gestures? It may have sounded like a dream until 2017 when Google released Cloud Speech-to-Text v1. This opened up a lot of possibilities for building augmented analytics in production. When I worked in consultancy, I built several commercial projects related to this. However, these systems were, to a large extent, rule-based. Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) have opened up a new era of augmented analytics. We not only know how to convert speech to text, but we can now convert text to code on a contextual level, and it actually works! In this talk, I would like to elaborate more on the topic of augmented analytics, present a brief history of developments in this field's technical capabilities, share several projects I implemented in this area, and discuss how LLMs revolutionised this field
