The open-source ecosystem has changed considerably in the last two years, especially due to strategic acquisitions of major players, fundamental alterations to key license frameworks, the impact of major cloud providers and the growth in GenAI code development.

The May Enterprise Tech Monthly event will bring together prominent executives from the European Open-Source ecosystem for a uniquely insightful discussion about the challenges and opportunities faced by the open-source movement, with the knock-on implications for longstanding dynamics between the community and enterprise software buyers.

We're privileged to announce Shay Bannon (CTO & Co-Founder of Elastic) as our guest speaker. He will be joined by an esteemed panel of industry experts, including:

  • Gerald Pfeffer (CTO at SUSE)
  • John O’Hara (Creator of AMQP, committer on Apache Qpid, Board of Adaptive)
  • Paula Kennedy (COO of Syntasso and CNCF Ambassador)

These discussions will be moderated by Faraaz Samadi (Partner at Orrick).

In addition, there will be a community talk by Rimma Perelmuter of the FINOS Foundation and a series of flash talks by innovative companies.

Sincere thanks to London Stock Exchange Group for hosting the Enterprise Tech Monthly, to Elastic and SUSE as monthly sponsors and to all our annual sponsors for 2025.

Let’s face it; while it is easier than ever to start a business, it is harder than ever to build a business… Higher interest rates have put a premium on the cost of capital, enterprise customers are tightening budgets and profitability is back in fashion.

There is a school of thought that technology is hindering rather than helping, as we make life harder for ourselves by trying to engineer complex infrastructure environments that rely on nascent technologies.

Cloud providers and their developer advocates have popularised wasteful architectures. For instance, the CNCF has over 100 cloud projects that are all compensating for things that used to be easy. Now we spend our lives overcoming the 10X performance loss that all come with running everything distributed over complex network environments.

We should be concentrating our efforts on building technology for making our business win, not run. We were able to build amazing systems 10 years ago – or were we? Are things better or worse?? Come join the debate!

John O’Hara (former Founder of Taskize, Distinguished Engineer at JP Morgan Chase and creator of AMQP) has offered to give us a preview of his QCon London talk, which discusses simplifying how we do technology to allow CTOs focus more clearly on differentiating their businesses. He will then be joined to discuss the topic by an expert panel, including:

  • Paula Kennedy (Co-Founder & COO, Syntasso)
  • Will Venters (Associate Professor of Digital Innovation, London School of Economics)
  • Speaker TBC
