Talk 1: Topological Signal Processing for Predictive Maintenance in Mechanical Systems.

Speaker: Nesrine Zarrouki is a data scientist based in Hamburg with a strong blend of academic knowledge and practical experience. She currently works at m2hycon GmbH, a data science consulting company with a focus on mathematical solutions and machine learning applications in production. Nesrine's work revolves around optimizing supply chain logistics, dynamic pricing, and signal processing. With a Master's degree in Mathematics from TU Berlin and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from TU Hamburg, she plays her favorite sport at the crossroads of mathematics and data science.

Abstract: The presence of noisy data in various industrial applications poses a challenge for conventional signal processing methods. This talk explores the use of topological methods as a powerful alternative for extracting the intrinsic features underlying noisy data, particularly in the context of predictive maintenance for mechanical parts. We will begin by discussing the motivation for applying topological methods to signals and provide an overview of core concepts in computational topology, including complexes, filtrations, and the persistence homology algorithm. The advantages of topological methods over traditional signal processing techniques, such as Fourier methods, will be highlighted. The talk will also emphasize the intuition behind the topology of a signal and how it relates to its periodicity. We will then compare the performance of different topological methods applied to the predictive maintenance task of mechanical parts based on audio recordings of their movement. Finally, we showcase the generality of topological methods as a powerful feature engineering toolkit for a broad range of data structures (time series, images, graphs…).

Talk 2: Responsible AI

Speaker: Mihail Douhaniaris is a Data Scientist at GetYourGuide, a leading online marketplace for booking tours, attractions and activities worldwide. At GetYourGuide, Mihail builds and refines the marketplace ranking algorithms, enhancing search relevance and enabling travelers to discover the most unforgettable experiences tailored to their preferences. Beyond his role, Mihail is passionate about responsible AI, ML observability, and deploying machine learning at scale. Living in Berlin, he balances his professional life with a love for climbing and cycling.

Abstract: In this talk, Mihail will discuss the importance of building responsible and fair ML systems, shedding light on the concept of Responsible AI. The talk will outline some practical steps and considerations for practitioners to ensure the responsible development of ML systems and briefly touch upon the industry tools available to detect and mitigate biases in ML, providing a comprehensive view of the path towards more ethical AI.

There will be slots for 2-3 Lightning Talks (5-6 Minutes for each). Kindly let us know if you would like to present something at the start of the meetup :)
