Title & Speakers Event

Master the logic of exhaustive exploration in this technical deep dive into Depth-First Search (DFS). This session is essential for developers aiming to sharpen their problem-solving skills and excel in coding interviews at top tech companies.1 You will learn how to navigate complex data structures by diving deep into a single branch of a graph or tree before backtracking, a strategy that is fundamental to advanced algorithm design.

We will explore the core mechanics of the Stack data structure and its role in managing the search path, whether through manual implementation or recursion. By understanding the "last-in, first-out" (LIFO) principle, you will gain a clear perspective on how DFS manages memory and state. We will also analyze time complexity and space complexity, giving you the tools to determine when this "depth-first" approach is more efficient than a "breadth-first" one.

The class also bridges the gap between theory and real-world applications. You’ll discover how DFS powers critical software functions like cycle detection in compilers, topological sorting for task scheduling, and even the logic behind automated maze solvers and puzzle AI.3 Seeing these graph algorithms in action will help you understand how to structure your own code to handle dependencies and complex nested relationships effectively.

By the end of this live session, you will be equipped with a robust framework for implementing DFS in various scenarios. We will practice identifying the specific software engineering problems—such as pathfinding in game AI or dependency resolution in package managers—where DFS is the optimal choice.4 This class is designed to elevate your algorithmic thinking and provide the practical confidence needed to tackle sophisticated engineering challenges.

The class will take place here - https://www.passionclass.co/en/join-sample-passionclass

Agenda

🏠 18:00 - Arrival: Networking, Drinks & Snacks (30 min.) Grab yourself snacks & drinks and say hello to everybody else!

📅 18:30 - So you want to observe an Event Driven System? (45 min.) 🎙️Speaker: Roman Boiko, Enterprise Sales Engineer @ Datadog

Event-driven architectures offer powerful decoupling, but they often shatter traditional monitoring strategies. When a single business process jumps across multiple queues, buses, and microservices, tracing the line between cause and effect becomes a complex puzzle. This talk bridges that visibility gap by exploring practical observability strategies using OpenTelemetry. We will navigate the critical architectural decisions behind distributed tracing - specifically choosing between Span Linking and Parent-Child relationships - and master context propagation to ensure no transaction is lost in the noise. Join us to learn how to connect low-level technical data with high-level business metrics, turning asynchronous complexity into a clear, manageable system.

Roman Boiko is a Senior Enterprise Sales Engineer at Datadog, where he helps developers and architects build reliable, observable, and scalable systems. With a strong background in serverless and cloud-native architectures, he’s passionate about bridging the gap between engineering and operations to help teams move faster with confidence. Roman frequently speaks at tech events, sharing practical insights on observability, distributed systems, and modern application design. He enjoys exploring how developers can simplify complexity and deliver better software through data-driven decisions.

📅 19:15 - Datadog at Zendesk - a solid foundation for scalable, reliable and cost efficient systems (30 min.) 🎙️Speaker: Anatoly Mikhaylov, Principal Software Engineer & Datadog Ambassador @ Zendesk

Anatoly will share practical and valuable lessons what value Datadog brings and what role it plays at Zendesk. They customized and encorporated observability triad (APM, Logs and metrics) within a large volume of systems and applications. Zendesk made it work very well at scale and so that Datadog became a common language engineers and product teams can speak to one another. A single picture often helps to narrow down the issue, surface the problem, brings the solution and be confident remediation is applied successfully. Zendesk teams are fluent using complex Datadog tools and drive necessary changes.

Speakers

Colin Miller mostly grew up in Austin, Texas, where he developed an early interest in software and maps. After his freshman year of college, he launched his first startup, Redistricter, which took off far faster than expected. He left school and moved to New York to pursue it full-time. A year later, he created Subway Builder, a hyper-realistic game that lets players design subway systems from scratch while navigating real-world constraints and costs. The game simulates millions of commuters using Census and Redistricter data, powered by the same pathfinding algorithms people rely on to get to work. Your job is to design a route network that gets the most people to their destination as fast as possible.

Greg Feliu is a data engineer and analyst focused on transportation analytics, with projects ranging from modeling subway–bus transfers to clustering NYC subway stations by ridership. Drawing on public ridership data and GTFS schedules, he builds minimal-assumption models to estimate ridership on each subway line, combining data modeling with subject-matter expertise to reveal how New Yorkers move through the system with The Busiest Subway Lines in NYC, Ranked.

TidyTuesday 2026-01-27 · 23:00

Join R-Ladies Ottawa for a casual evening of programming on Tuesday, January 27th. We'll be participating in TidyTuesday, a weekly data visualization challenge organized by the R for Data Science community.

What is TidyTuesday?

Every week, a new dataset is posted online on the TidyTuesday GitHub repo, and folks from around the world create data visualizations using the dataset. It's an opportunity to put your programming skills into practice using real-world data in a way that's fun! It's also a great way for everyone to learn from each other, by sharing their visualizations and code.

What will the dataset be?

Even we don't know that (yet)! We'll have to wait until the day before the event to know what data we'll be working with. If you're interested in seeing some past datasets, take a look at the examples below, or visit the TidyTuesday GitHub repo to see all of the datasets dating back to 2018.

Examples from past TidyTuesdays:

Do I have to use R?

No! You can use any programming language or visualization software that you want. In fact, Python users from around the globe participate in "TyDyTuesday" on a weekly basis.

Who is this event for?

No previous programming experience is required to participate, and we'll have experienced programmers in the room who can help you get started (or unstuck), if needed.

...But if you want to get the most out of the event, a good way to prepare is to watch the recording of the introduction to data visualization workshop we hosted back in 2024. :)

What should I bring?

  • Please bring a laptop so you can code along. We recommend that you have RStudio or another IDE (such as VS Code or Positron) installed ahead of time, but we can help you get one installed if needed!
  • Come ready to learn, share, and contribute to a safe and welcoming community!

How will this event work?

  • First few minutes of the event: Introductions, and taking a look at the dataset together as a group.
  • Time to create a data visualization using the language or software of your choice, either on your own or with a (new) friend! Grab a free snack while you're at it :)
  • Last \~30 minutes of the event: Show and tell session for anyone who would like to share their creation with the group.

What else do I need to know?

This event (like all R-Ladies events) is totally FREE to attend.

The event will take place at Bayview Yards, which is located just a few steps away from the Bayview O-Train station. There is also a free parking lot available for those who are driving. You can find us in the "Training Room", which is on the second floor of the Bayview Yards building.

This is an in-person event with limited space! Please only RSVP if you are able to attend in-person!

***Please note that the mission of R-Ladies is to increase gender diversity in the R community. This event is intended to provide a safe space for women and gender minorities. We ask for male allies to be invited by and accompanied by a woman or gender minority.***

We’re grateful to be part of the Bayview Meetups initiative and extend our thanks to Bayview Yards for generously providing the venue space.

This is a virtual meeting on Zoom. Watch for the meeting ID and passcode after you RSVP.

VIDEO CONFERENCE DETAILS: London Time: 18:00-19:00 Introductions on Zoom. 19:00-20:00 Informal Networking using Zoom breakout rooms or other channels.

You can download the Zoom client ahead of time at https://zoom.us/download#client_4meeting. I recommend you familiarize yourself with the Zoom app if you've never used it before. Here are some helpful tutorials: https://bit.ly/3alN4NV.

A few things to prepare: • You should check in about 10 minutes early to make sure you can connect and your audio and video are working right.

• To handle introductions, you will be called on when it's your turn to introduce yourself. A microphone will be required for us to hear you. If you choose computer audio please make sure yours is set up and working with Zoom — there is a test function within the app.

• Having your own camera and having it on is required.

• Admissions close 10 minutes past the hour to avoid disrupting the meeting in progress.

• By default, you will be muted at the start. You can unmute yourself when it’s your turn to speak. Please mute yourself again afterward to avoid disruptions to the meeting.

• Once we are done with the introductions we'll have some themed breakout rooms (tech, sales/marketing, legal, finance, other) for networking.

• IMPORTANT: If you'd like to connect with other participants after the session by using the messaging feature in Meetup make sure to change your Privacy Settings to allow being contacted by other members.
