OpenUK London #20: Open AI

Due to an ongoing maintenance issue in our regular venue, we are moving just two stops south to Borough. Please double-check the location in the event details before you travel! Wednesday 15th January we're back with our 20th OpenUK London community meetup! We've had the hype, now let's get real with how AI is working for us, of course the open source kind! (Open AI in the title is not to be confused with OpenAI because that is not open.) 6:30 pm: Arrive on time, grab a bev, a slice and a chat. Scope out our swag table (bring pieces to contribute or trade!) Add to our whiteboarding brainstorm 6:45 pm: Welcome, reminder of code of conduct, and discussion of whiteboard 7:00 pm: State of AI Openness 2024 explained with Amanda Brock, OpenUK CEO 7:20pm: Speech to Speech translation with a cascade of open source models, presented by AI developer Nikita Krasnytskyi 7:40 pm: Unum Cloud, advanced AI computing company for scaling intelligence, presented by founder Ash Vardanian 8:00 pm: Zeval: Open Source Testing Library for LLMs, presented by Matt Carey 8:45 pm: Clean up and leave. Bring tupperware so we don't waste pizza! We will give one ticket away to someone online and to someone in person to this year's State of Open Con! We focus a lot on the pillar of open source software, but OpenUK also stands on Open Data and Open Hardware. After our break in August, this month we are getting into all things Open Data. 6:30 pm: Arrive, grab a bev, a slice and a chat. Scope out our swag table (bring pieces to contribute or trade!) 7:00 pm: Lorna Mitchell talking about Open Standards for APIs with QnA. 7:20 pm: Terrence Eden talking about how AI Scrapers can be Polite to Open Data sets with QnA. 7:40 pm: Have an open data project to share? We are looking for another? Can be done remote! Please bring swag for our swag swap table! 8:30-8:45 pm: Cleanup and see-ya-next-time. OpenUK London Meetup September - Open and AI?

Join us September 19th to discuss the hot topic of 2023: Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is much talked about, everywhere from the news, in Parliament, to the boardroom and pubs across the country, but, what really is AI, and how does openness matter with it? To get things kicked off, Matt Armstrong-Barnes from HPE will present a level set on AI, what it is, who is using it, what it is being used for, and possible directions. Next Jennifer Ding from the Alan Turing Institute and contributor to the recent OpenUK AI Openness Report will discuss the importance of open in AI and why open approaches lead to better results. Food and drinks will be provided and there will be plenty of time to chat with other attendees and debate with the speakers. Matt Armstrong-Barnes As a Chief Technologist at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Matt has a passion for artificial intelligence and data science. He has held senior management positions and been accountable for the overall architecture (including Business, Security, Integration and Technology), technical risks, IT strategy, and technology change for customers. He holds a Degree in Computer Science, with a Masters in Artificial Intelligence. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society, Chartered IT Professional and Chair of Smart Cities at TechUK, and was awarded the title of Chartered Engineer by the Engineering Council. Jennifer Ding Jennifer Ding is a senior researcher at The Alan Turing Institute, co-leading the Research Application Management (RAM) team. Previously, she was a startup founder and data scientist at several public interest tech companies, creating data products for industry and government partners. She enjoys massaging data big and small, and is a co-founder of London Data Week.
