PyData Leeds: June Meet-up

PyData Leeds is back and we're very excited to bring you the June Meet-up. We've got a full schedule with 3 presentations, it's going to be great!

PyData Leeds is the Yorkshire-based chapter that brings together people who are passionate about Python, Data & Engineering for evenings focussed around learning and networking.

Schedule

Date: Tuesday 4th June 2024 Time: 17:30 Location: Hippo Event Space, 26 Aire St, Leeds, LS1 4HT (At the back of Brew Society)

Agenda

17:30: Networking and Refreshments

18:00: Welcome & Icebreaker

18:15: Beenita Shah and Dan Bouchard @ Channel 4, 'What shall we watch? Recommender systems at Channel 4' Viewers are faced with overwhelming amounts of content and get caught searching for the next thing that they should watch for so long that they never watch it! This talk will outline how we have developed viewing embeddings of Channel 4 content to power our recommendations, with a particular focus on synthesizing these embeddings for content without a viewing history to use.

18:45: Tom Madeley and Camila Varo @ Channel 4, 'Please AI, What is this?' Broadcasters have to add standard metadata tags (eg. Comedy, Drama, Coming of age) to their content for a variety of uses, for example syndication across other platforms. This talk will explain how we have used LLMS and a RAG architecture to suggest tags for episodes of content, based on the content's subtitles.

19:15: Dan Schofield @ NHS England, 'How Python Empowers Short-Term Innovation in NHS England: Unveiling the Wrapper Magic' Python has been the backbone of short-term innovation projects undertaken as part of the NHS England PhD Data Science Internship Scheme. Dan will cover how these projects have used Python as a wrapper to implement tools in other languages like Rust or Julia.

19:45: Wrap-up & Drinks in Brew Society

PyData Leeds is excited to bring you the June Meet-up and we're looking forward to seeing you there!

Date: Tuesday 20th June 2023 Time: 18:00 Location: 7th Floor, 1 East Parade, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 2AD

With the first meet-up, we listened to what the Leeds Python/Data Community was looking for and have been working on a roadmap for 2023.

Agenda: 17:45-18:00 - Arrival 18:00-18:15 - Food and Networking 18:15-18:45 - Presentation 1 19:00-19:30 - Follow-up

Presentation 1 - Mike Le Galloudec, 'Storytelling with Data' Mike has been working in data for four years, having spent the previous 7 teaching physics. He's currently a consultant data engineer for The Oakland Group, and will be talking about how to construct amazing narratives over the insights we find in our data. He'll be deconstructing what makes a story, as well as how best to demonstrate data to a non-technical audience.

As well as listening to the great talks, there will be an opportunity to network, ask questions and register an interest to get involved in hosting, speaking and organising.
