🎙 Main talk by Matthias Kirschner: Let’s spark children’s interest in coding – Our experiences and how you can contribute Today it is impossible to imagine daily life without software. The majority of us can’t spend a single day without using it. People use software in the workplace, on laptops, and on mobile phones. Software is also found in less obvious places however: in trains, cars, televisions, washing-machines, fridges, and many other devices. None of these devices could function without software. Without software we couldn’t write e-mails, make phone calls, go shopping, or travel as we are accustomed to. Software is our society’s central tool. How do we ensure that the next generation is motivated and capable of shaping technology for society’s benefits? Through the book Ada & Zangemann – A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream the Free Software Foundation Europe’s volunteers and staff have interacted with over 1700 children between 6 to 10 years in the past months. Children, especially girls, afterwards were motivated to start experimenting with hardware and software. In the discussions we saw that they realise how crucial technology will be for them. Furthermore with the FSFE's coding competition Youth Hacking 4 Freedom we gathered experiences working with teenagers who program, tinker, and have fun with software. Learn more about the experiences how the FSFE sparks children’s and teenagers interest to tinker, experiment and program. Furthermore you will see how fulfilling those activities can be for yourself.

🧑‍💻 About Matthias Kirschner Matthias Kirschner is President of FSFE. In 1999 he started using GNU/Linux and realised that software is deeply involved in all aspects of our lives. Matthias is convinced that this technology has to empower society not restrict it. While studying Political and Administrative Science he joined FSFE in 2004. He helps other organisations, companies and governments to understand how they can benefit from Free Software – which gives everybody the rights to use, understand, adapt, and share software – and how those rights help to support freedom of speech, freedom of press or privacy. In his spare time Matthias wrote the book Ada & Zangemann – A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream, which is available at publishers in English, German, French, and Italian, and translated into Arabic, Valencian, Danish, Spanish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, Dutch and other languages.

🎙 Main talk by Andreas Jung: zopyx-fastapi-auth – yet another, opinionated authentication and authorization framework for FastAPI FastAPI does not come with a built-in system for handling authentication and authorization. To address this gap during the migration of the Universität of Saarbrücken’s CMS from Plone to FastAPI, I designed and implemented a custom framework called zopyx/fastapi-auth. This framework draws on ideas and experiences from Plone and Zope. The zopyx-fastapi-auth package offers comprehensive support for roles and permissions, and it includes an RDBMS-based user management system compatible with nearly all SQL databases. Additionally, it provides tools for managing users, their passwords, and their roles. One of the key advantages of zopyx/fastapi-auth is that it does not require any modifications to the existing FastAPI implementation. To protect endpoints using a specific permission or role, you simply apply the provided Protected() decorator, which configures the necessary protection for the endpoint.

🧑‍💻 About Andreas Jung He is a Python professional with nearly thirty years of experience, specializing in backend development, software and enterprise architecture, Python tutoring and mentoring, as well as requirements and project management. He has extensive expertise in content management systems and electronic publishing, particularly in XML and PDF. He is keen on engaging in new, exciting projects where he can leverage his skills as a developer and architect to create significant value for clients. Throughout his career, he has worked across diverse industries including publishing, energy, medicine, and pharmaceuticals. His ability to quickly understand complex topics, analyze requirements, and develop sustainable software and enterprise architectures is a key strength. Currently, his focus is on planning and implementing green-field projects. While he identifies primarily as a backend developer and architect, he also possesses experience in frontend, network, cloud, and deployment. This allows him to contribute meaningfully to all aspects of projects, often collaborating with experts in these specific fields.

🎙 Main talk by Itamar Turner-Trauring Climate change is coming for us all, with catastrophic consequences if we don't take action. What can you, as someone who writes software, do about it? How can you apply your skills to make the situation better? In this talk I'll cover two ways out of many. The first, politics, may not seem obvious, but is the most important—and your career is relevant (and even many of your skills!). The second: reducing carbon emissions by making software more efficient at scale.

🧑‍💻 About Itamar Turner-Trauring Itamar has been using Python since 1999. He helps companies speed up scientific computing pipelines, is currently working on a book for data scientists and scientists on speeding up low-level code, and he volunteers with a local group organizing for safer bike infrastructure. He writes about Python performance, Docker packaging, and more at https://pythonspeed.com.
