PostgreSQL September Meetup
2025-09-23 ยท 16:30
We will be hosting our September Meetup. Thanks to Amazon for sponsoring us. Please note that you have to show sign up with your real name and show a Photo ID to the building security before entering the building. This is a requirement from the building security. If you are not ok with that, please do not sign up. You can not bring a +1, everyone needs to sign up. Please only sign up if you plan to come, we will keep notes. Speakers: Divyendu Singh: How LLMs Help Us Manage PostgreSQL at Scale Marko Coha: Postgres in the Cloud Additional information for Meetup attendees are available here: https://andreas.scherbaum.la/post/2025-05-05_attending-organizing-or-speaking-at-a-meetup/ How LLMs Help Us Manage PostgreSQL at Scale: The Xata Agent is an open-source AI PostgreSQL expert. It monitors Postgres clusters by analyzing metrics and logs, checking pg_stat_statements for slow queries, running EXPLAIN and interpreting the output. We have been using the Agent internally on a large fleet of production PostgreSQL clusters, and we have gathered valuable insights, including: - Comparing different models and providers and their benefits. - Combining cloud hosting observability data with Postgres tools. - The cost implications of using LLMs for database monitoring. - Testing the agentโs effectiveness in detecting performance regressions. Postgres in the Cloud: This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of hosting PostgreSQL in the cloud, examining both strategic benefits and potential trade-offs. Attendees will first gain an understanding of the key reasons organizations choose cloud-based PostgreSQL deployments, including scalability, operational efficiency, and cost optimization. We will explore how cloud platforms can simplify database administration, accelerate time-to-market, and support dynamic workloads, while also enabling global accessibility and high availability. |

Bart Vernaillen - The impact of character data types on query memory grants. How does a datatype impact your query performance? Is there a relation between your data types and memory grants in SQL Server? We will clearly show you the impact we a few examples 2. Ben Weiner - Automating Data Cleaning in Excel with Power Query There are many ways to clean data in Excel using formulas and functions, but these can be manual and time consuming, especially if they need to be applied every time the data set is expanded. Power Query is a tool in Excel which allows users to create a series of steps, such as removing duplicates, creating calculations and formatting text, that are remembered and automatically applied to a data set. In this presentation I will go through all the steps of cleaning a messy data set in Excel using Power Query, showing how to automate repetitive tasks so Excel users will be able to spend less time on data cleaning and more time on data analysis. About: Bart Vernaillen Iโm Bart Vernaillen, an experienced IT professional with over 20 years of experience. My primary focus goes to automating SQL server administration tasks. In the past, I used VBScript to simplify database management tasks. However, when PowerShell emerged, I immediately transitioned to this new technology. My extensive scripting experience enables me to create comprehensive automation solutions for various SQL tasks. From installation, configuration, and migrations to database creation, deletion, backup, restoration, and SQL monitoring. (and much more) My motto: "If you do something, do it right immediately." About: Ben Weiner A qualified CIMA Chartered Management Accountant and Microsoft Excel Expert Ben Weiner has been working in finance for over ten years. ATTENTION Since September, we've been having meetups at Spectrum IT's office - Gamma House, Enterprise Rd, Chilworth, Southampton SO16 7NS https://maps.app.goo.gl/66tL8HfgFnoiQEh66 Agenda 18:00: Welcome and Intros Ivanna Jurkiv Ditlevsen - How to optimize Azure Synapse pipelines using SQL database meta data tables pizza/networking break Jacek Nosal - Power BI Maps. Outside your country. Frederick Anaafi - Deep Dive into DataViz Tool: Microsoft Power BI 21:00: Raffle and finish 1. Ivanna Jurkiv Ditlevsen - How to optimize Azure Synapse pipelines using SQL database meta data tables
I am accustomed to using Synapse pipelines exactly for these purposes. I am also used to working in multiple deployment environments (DEV, UAT and PROD). One challenge that I stumbled upon with this kind of setup was the effort and time it would take to make updates to the list of tables to be ingested and datasets to be refreshed in PowerBI. For instance, to ingest data from an additional table, I would need to update the relevant parameter in one of the Synapse pipelines in DEV environment. Then it would be submitted in a pull request, released to UAT, tested there. Only after a few weeks, would the new data start being ingested in PROD. Doesn't this sound too complex for what it really is? If you agree, then tag along and I will show you how to use a few meta data tables built in a SQL database to optimize Synapse pipelines. In my talk, I will focus on 2 examples: 1. using meta data tables to optimize ingestion of data tables 2. using meta data tables to optimize automatic refresh of PowerBI datasets from Synapse pipelines Note: the session includes a walk-through the solution and assumes familiarity with Azure Synapse pipelines or Azure Data Factory 2. Jacek Nosal - Power BI Maps. Outside your country. Have you ever heard about Power BI, then tried to create a report and the first results were satisfactory. We even managed to create a visualization presenting the data on a map. However, would you be ready to develop an administrative map from outside your country? Language barrier, new letters... can anything else surprise you? Let me show... 3. Frederick Anaafi - Deep Dive into DataViz Tool: Microsoft Power BI This session offers a comprehensive overview of the Power BI tool and its extensive capabilities, covering key topics such as data visualization, data modeling, and data analysis within the Power BI Platform. The integration of practical scenarios and examples showcases the applied use of Power BI in various industries and business contexts. Through interactive demonstrations, participants will gain hands-on experience in connecting to diverse data sources, including Excel spreadsheets, SQL databases, and cloud-based services. By leveraging these connections, attendees will learn how to transform raw data into visually appealing and insightful reports. Practical scenarios will be presented, such as trend analysis and opportunity identification, as well as visualizing customer behavior to optimize marketing strategies. Moreover, participants will be guided through the Power BI user interface, exploring a wide range of features and functionalities available for report creation and customization. Practical examples will illustrate the design of interactive visualizations, the application of filters and slicers for data exploration, and the incorporation of calculated measures and hierarchies for advanced analysis. By the end of the session, attendees will establish a solid foundation in Power BI and possess the skills necessary to create impactful reports and dashboards. This session is ideal for individuals seeking to leverage the power of Power BI for data analysis and visualization in practical, real-world scenarios. *** A massive thanks to our sponsor Spectrum IT. Without them, we would not be able to host this event for free. Spectrum IT kindly provide funding for the room, pizza and a ยฃ20 Amazon Voucher for in-person attendees. *** |

September Meetup at Amazon
2023-09-18 ยท 16:00
We are happy to announce our September PostgreSQL Meetup! AWS gracefully offered to host us on September 18th, starting 18:00. We have two great talks this time! Exploring index infrastructure: Implementation of an opclass for UUID v1 support in PostgreSQL by Nick Babadzhanian. We'll touch on a number of topics ranging from WAL amplification and performance impact of data distribution to extension development and of course opclasses and their role in the index infrastructure of PostgreSQL. We will touch on the internals but keep it friendly for a wide audience. and Patroni 3.0: What's New and Future Plans by Polina Bungina and Alexander Kukushkin. Patroni is one of the most popular and advanced solutions for PostgreSQL high-availability. It is integrated with a variety of distributed configuration stores allowing Patroni to work with PostgreSQL cluster information in a consistent way ensuring that there is only one leader at a time. Unlike the majority of existing solutions for automatic failover, Patroni requires a minimal effort to configure the HA cluster and supports auto-discovery of new nodes. This talk will consist of a short introduction to the ideas behind Patroni, overview of the major features that we have released lately, cover some interesting failure scenarios which were fixed, and share some plans for the future development. Of course, the talk will not be complete without showing a live demo of some brand-new features. Location: Amazon c/o Rocket Tower (BER16) Charlottenstraรe 4 10969 Berlin Please note that you need to provide a registration and a photo ID for entering the building. Check-in will need approx. 30 minutes, please plan accordingly. Food and soft drinks will be provided, alcohol is not permitted during the event. Amazon is running a 1-day training event on 19th September. If you would like to participate, please contact your AWS SA/TAM/AM for more details. |
