Session Abstract -

In this session, I'll provide a comprehensive introduction to Microsoft's latest analytical superpower—Microsoft Graph.

We'll start by exploring the fundamental ingredients of graph databases: nodes (your data entities) and edges (the relationships that connect them). I'll demonstrate how to combine these elements and add various "flavors" using GQL (Graph Query Language)—the newly standardized ISO query language that's making graph operations more consistent and portable across platforms. Spoiler alert: it's way more intuitive than wrestling with complex SQL joins that look like they were designed by someone who really, really loved parentheses.

To bring everything together, I'll showcase hands-on demos that illuminate the practical differences between these database approaches and demonstrate the impressive analytical capabilities of Microsoft Fabric Graph. You'll see real-world scenarios where graph analytics reveals insights that would be practically impossible (or at least incredibly painful) to extract from traditional tabular data.

This session is designed for both developers and architects, offering a dual perspective that balances the technical nitty-gritty with strategic architectural considerations. You'll gain practical insights into working with GQL tooling while also understanding the business challenges Microsoft Fabric Graph will solve.

Whether you're considering adding graph capabilities to your data platform or just curious about what all the graph hype is about, this session will equip you with the knowledge to make informed decisions and maybe even impress your colleagues at the next team meeting.

Description:

This session is about the new Microsoft Fabric item type Org App and how this new item will help to further share insights inside our team or even throughout the entire organization. This new feature or set of capabilities set might not seem as important large as a lakehouse, but during this session I will explain why org app are not minor but part of team of heroes.

The session starts with a short overview of the workspace app, its history, and its current state. I will provide a short overview of how to use a workspace app properly, including the feature "multiple audiences."

But then this session is about the new king, Org Apps (or Organizational Apps). What makes them different (I think a lot), what are their super powers (there are some), and of course their weaknesses. This means this will become a tale from integrating new Fabric items like a real time dashbord, and a notebook into an Org App and how the entifre organization will benefit from these new item types, but also how we have to adapt our way of deploying (meaning sharing) these insights with our users.

This session is addressing the Power BI Developer (who is creating this new item type), the Solution Architect (who is architecting an analytical solution), and the Fabric Tenant Administrator (who will oversee the mental and physical health of the Fabric tenant).

At the end of the Meetup we'll have a Raffle with prizes offered by Enterprise DNA: 2 (two) 1 year FREE Membership Licenses on EDNA Platform for two lucky winners from the Live attendees !

Org Apps: The king is dead, Long live the king! | Thomas Martens

Hi, Data Folks from Hamburg!

Here is the invitation for October 2024.

Attention! We gained another great room sponsor: ERGON Datenprojekte! Don't worry; you won't have to figure out a complete new route for the evening, as the venue is virtually on the opposite street side of the Main Central Station Hamburg, in the city center.

  • 18:00 Open door and warm up networking round
  • 18:15 Intro
  • 18:30 Power BI: Large Datasets and Incremental Refresh (Tom Martens)
  • 20:00 Open discussion about the topic
  • 21:00 The End...

Power BI - Large Datasets and Incremental Refresh This session is about incrementally refreshing Power BI's large semantic models, but it also mentions new capabilities of the Power BI Premium Gen 2 architecture, like hybrid tables. The session will conclude with a demonstration of incremental refreshes, including on-demand load, asynchronous refreshes, and hybrid tables. Then, the different methods of managing large models will be compared. Last, I will explain why I emphasize this: "There is no incremental refresh without preparing for a future initial load." Power BI: Large Datasets and Incremental Refresh - Tom Martens

Session:

For decades I've been designing, architecting, and implementing analytical solutions using MSFT data technologies, and I'm still not bored.

I consider the current times being the most exciting ones. New products/companies promising to solve analytical challenges easily are entering the stage almost every day. But what I consider even more important, not to say challenging is the advent of new concepts. Whereas I can ignore a new product easily to avoid re-training hundreds of users and other aspects like becoming a Junior again, new concepts are a different beast.

I consider concepts the building blocks that fuel any business or technology-focused initiative. The data warehouse concept is about creating a single point of truth (next to some other things). The concept of a lake house is about - what?

Ignoring a concept can become the root cause of demise, or as I put it sometimes: death by arrogance.

In this session, I will provide an overview of current concepts like data product, data contract, data lake house, and many other data ... concepts, why I consider some of them more important than others, compare concepts with similar approaches from the past, and of course: I will provide ideas how these concepts can be implemented using Microsoft Fabric and why they should - from a business perspective.
