Principal, Data Innovation (Machine learning) Ofcom

As a Principal in the Online Safety Technology team at Ofcom, I lead a diverse and talented team working on various aspects of AI and ML. This includes capability building to develop our expertise and consultancy/advisory work for policy colleagues. I also co-lead Ofcom’s Data and AI Culture programme of work and help to identify and create training and guidance materials on Data and Generative AI for technical professionals, provide teach-ins for senior management, deliver compliance courses and define guardrails for the organisation to ensure effective and responsible use of AI tools. My previous roles at Samsung and Motorola involved developing algorithms and working in international standardisation in ETSI, ITU-T and 3GPP. My research topics included speech recognition, microphone arrays, speech enhancement, codec development, speech quality, audio restoration and multi-talker expressive speech synthesis. I have also lectured at Surrey, Imperial, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore). Before I joined Ofcom in 2021, I would not have described myself as working in Data or AI. Even though I've been engaged in research and development using Deep Learning since 2017, and my PhD involved Neural Networks, for the past 25+ years I would have labelled myself as a Speech/Audio Engineer!
