IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Versions 5.4 and 5.5 Technical Guide

This IBM® Redbooks® publication provides details of changes, updates, and new functions in IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager Version 5.4, and Version 5.5. We cover all the new functions of Tivoli Storage Manager that have become available since the publication of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.3 Technical Guide, SG24-6638. This book is for customers, consultants, IBM Business Partners, and IBM and Tivoli staff who are familiar with earlier releases of Tivoli Storage Manager and who want to understand what is new in Version 5.4 and Version 5.5. Hence, since we target an experienced audience, we use certain shortcuts to commands and concepts of Tivoli Storage Manager. If you want to learn more about Tivoli Storage Manager functionality, see IBM Tivoli Storage Management Concepts, SG24-4877, and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Implementation Guide, SG24-5416. This publication should be used in conjunction with the manuals and readme files provided with the products and is not intended to replace any information contained therein.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Advanced Copy Services

Backing up SAP software environments is increasingly challenging in today’s 24x7 enterprises. Even more challenging is restoring these environments. Applications and databases grow ever larger, putting increasing strain on the management infrastructure. Using hardware-assisted copy mechanisms to perform fast backups and restores is one way to address these issues. Tivoli Storage Manager, along with associated products, allows you to leverage FlashCopy to perform fast backups, almost “instant” restores, as well as database cloning for testing and other purposes. These applications are fully integrated with SAP software in DB2 UDB and Oracle environments, providing reliable, intelligent techniques for data protection. This IBM Redbooks publication will help you plan, configure, and run IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Advanced Copy Services and associated applications in your SAP software environments.

Using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager to Back Up Microsoft Exchange with VSS

Typical Microsoft Exchange environments are growing larger and increasingly are managing data and applications critical to a business. This makes backup and restore a greater challenge. Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is a way to use the instant copy capabilities of disk storage hardware for faster backup, thereby reducing the time taken for backup as well as reducing the impact which the backup operation has on the Exchange server.

ILM Library: Techniques with Tivoli Storage and IBM TotalStorage Products

Every organization has large amounts of data to store, use, and manage. For most, this quantity is increasing. However, over time, the value of this data changes. How can we map data to an appropriate storage media, so that it can be accessed in a timely manner when needed, retained for as long as required, and disposed of when no longer needed? Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) provides solutions. ILM is the process of managing information—from creation, through its useful life, to its eventual destruction—in a manner that aligns storage costs with the changing business value of information. We can think of ILM as an integrated solution of five IT management and infrastructure components working together: Service management (service levels), content management, workflow management (or process management), storage management, and storage infrastructure. This IBM Redbooks publication will help you understand what ILM is and why it is of value to you in your organization, and provide you with suggested ways to implement it using IBM products.

IBM Tivoli Storage Area Network Manager: A Practical Introduction

Now that you have installed your SAN, how are you going to manage it? This IBM Redbooks publication describes the new product, IBM Tivoli Storage Area Network Manager, an active, intelligent, business-centric management solution for storage resources across the enterprise. IBM Tivoli Storage Area Network Manager provides effective discovery and presentation of SAN physical and logical topologies and provides multiple views of the SAN, including zones. Through its interface, it can be configured to show historical and real-time monitoring of SAN fabric devices. With IBM Tivoli Storage Area Network Manager, you will know what's on your SAN, how the devices are connected, and how storage is assigned to the hosts. If something goes wrong, or new devices are added, the topology display automatically updates to show the changed topology. SAN generated events can be displayed on the manager system, or forwarded to another SNMP manager or Tivoli Enterprise Console. This book is written for those who want to learn more about IBM Tivoli SAN Manager, as well as those who are about to implement it. This second edition of the book is current to IBM Tivoli SAN Manager V1.2. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager: A Practical Introduction

Storage growth continues to accelerate, and the cost of disk can approach 80% of total system hardware costs. Yet, the storage in most businesses is typically only about 50% used. How can you take control of your storage assets to render utilization more efficient, and make the most of your storage dollars? The second edition of this book is updated for IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Version 1.2 Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.
