Title & Speakers Event

It's been a while!

We’re excited to bring Berlin C++ community back together. See you at a post-CppCon evening hosted by think-cell — featuring a live talk, fresh insights from this year's conference, and time to reconnect over drinks, snacks, and good C++ discussion.

Live Talk: To Err is Human — Robust Error Handling in C++26

by Sebastian Theophil, Senior Software Engineer at think-cell

Sebastian will present his CppCon 2025 talk at the meetup. He’ll walk us through the new error handling features in C++26 — including std::expected, std::stacktrace, contracts, and more — and how they can help us write more robust, maintainable code.

Community Discussion & Q&A

After the talk, we’ll be joined by Christian Klöckner, CTO at think-cell, for an open discussion with him and Sebastian about this year’s CppCon, their impressions and insights. If you attended, bring your highlights. If you didn’t, bring your questions. Either way, join us to talk about CppCon 2025 topics and outcomes!

We’d love to hear your thoughts on modern C++, the direction of the language, and what’s shaping engineering work across our community. You’re welcome to submit questions or discussion topics in advance via the RSVP form.

Who’s it for?

This event is open to everyone who cares about C++, whether you're deep in templates or just curious about what’s coming next. No CppCon ticket required, only an interest to connect after this year's conference.

Free to attend. Drinks and pizza provided. Please RSVP so we can plan food and space.

Real-Time Audio in Rust: A Practical Guide for C++ Developers Stephan Eckes

While many of the biggest software companies are moving from C++ to Rust, most of what you hear online is about how much "safer" and faster Rust is—often from the perspective of web developers. But does it actually help when you're writing real-time code? And what does it change in your day-to-day work?

After three years of building real-time audio systems in Rust, I’ll share what really mattered to me after switching from C++. This talk is about the practical side: what got better, what stayed tricky, and how Rust actually helped me write safer and more reliable real-time audio code.

Stephan is a software engineer at ai\|coustics\, where he is responsible for the SDK that runs neural networks for real-time audio using a custom inference engine written in Rust. He previously studied at the Audio Communication Group at TU Berlin and has worked as a DSP and plug-in developer for u-he\, Holoplot\, and Neumann. In his spare time\, he maintains open-source libraries and creates coding tutorials on YouTube.

Talk #1 How to Hack an Agent – or Not Thomas Fraunholz Senior Researcher AI @ Smart Labs AI Large language models (LLMs) are not as secure as they seem. Beyond their tendency to “hallucinate,” they can be manipulated using jailbreaks and adversarial prompts, bypassing safeguards designed to keep them in check. But the real challenge arises when LLMs are connected to agents with real-world capabilities—like sending emails. This talk explores the security risks of AI agents and the ongoing research into making them more resilient. Using the "Adaptive Prompt Injection: LLMail Inject" challenge from the IEEE Conference on Secure and Trustworthy Machine Learning as a case study, we’ll examine how Microsoft’s Phi3 and OpenAI’s GPT-4o-mini handle adversarial attacks. We’ll break down security techniques like LLM judges, task drift detection, and prompt shields—critical concepts as the EU AI Act's security mandates take effect in August 2025. Attendees will gain insights into the strengths and weaknesses of current AI security mechanisms and learn practical strategies for assessing the safety of AI agents in production environments.

About the Speaker Thomas is an MLOps and NLP expert with a background in applied mathematics and embedded programming. He has led two publicly funded AI research programs with the German Aerospace Center and is currently focused on AI-driven cybersecurity at Smart Labs AI GmbH. In his spare time, he’s developing a low-budget drone system for detecting bark beetle infestations, blending his passion for AI and embedded systems.

The main focus will be on sharing practical insights and a starting point (hopefully) without delving too deeply into technical complexities.

Achillefs is a musician and developer living in Berlin. In 2023, he founded Axart Software, a music software company specializing in developing MIDI plugins. Achillefs' interests include generative and algorithmic art, as well as new forms of interactions between humans and machines.

If you need to take the lift then please ask someone from Holoplot for assistance.

Talks: You've made it, now explain it Astrid Bin

Making the thing is one part of the design process, but documentation is part of a broader process of designing any hardware or software product, and one that has a significant impact on how and why people buy what you make. Music technology is particularly tricky, because no matter how intuitive the design people need to be able to start somewhere and learn how to use it, and use it in their own creative context. In this talk Astrid shares lessons she's learned through incorporating documentation into the design process of Bela, a hardware system for creating interaction with sensors and sound, as well as Bela's other products that range from touch sensors to synth modules.

Demystifying std::memory_order Timur Doumler

Atomic variables are an essential tool for programming for real-time audio processing as they are needed to implement any kind of lock-free algorithm or data structure. In C++, atomic variables are readily available in the Standard Library through std::atomic. In order to use std::atomic in an efficient and performant manner, it is crucial to pick the correct memory order for the atomic operation at hand depending on the requirements of the algorithm, which can be accomplished via the std::memory_order parameter that every atomic operation in C++ accepts. Yet memory order in C++ is notoriously hard to reason about and often misunderstood. In this talk, we give a brief overview over the C++ memory model, explain the differences between relaxed, consume, acquire, release, and sequentially consistent memory order, and give some guidelines for which to use when working with atomic reads, writes, read-modify-write operations, and memory fences.

Event C++ Meetup in Berlin 2024-11-13
jonathan m ller – Software Engineer @ think-cell

There are, by now, several well-established C++ JSON libraries. C++ developers can choose between DOM parsers, SAX parsers, and pull parsers. DOM parsers are by design slow and use a lot of memory, SAX parsers are clumsy to use, so pull parsers are the way to go. Our open-source JSON parser fills this gap between the existing parser libraries. It is a fully validating, fast, pull parser with O(1) memory usage. The key innovation lies in our API design. Unlike other parsers that solely validate JSON, ours enforces semantical constraints, requiring developers to define specific structures. This results in automatic error handling and simplifies code. You can also parse directly into your own data structures without any extra copies. This talk showcases our JSON parser API in action, comparing it with established counterparts. Additionally, we demonstrate elegant generic programming C++ techniques, making it accessible to both beginners and intermediate developers.

Think Parallel 2024-11-13 · 17:30
bryce adelstein lelbach – Principal Architect @ NVIDIA

By default, we think sequentially. Parallelism and asynchrony are often seen as challenging and complex. Tools to be used sparingly and cautiously, and only by experts. But we must shatter these assumptions, for today, we live in a parallel world. Almost every hardware platform is parallel, from the smallest embedded devices to the largest supercomputers. We must change our mindset. Anyone who writes code has to think in parallel. Parallelism must become our default. In this example-driven talk, we will journey into the world of parallelism. We'll look at four algorithms and data structures in depth, comparing and contrasting different implementation strategies and exploring how they will perform both sequentially and in parallel. During this voyage, we'll uncover and discuss some foundational principles of parallelism, such as latency hiding, localizing communication, and efficiency vs performance tradeoffs. By the time we're done, you'll be thinking in parallel.
