#276: BI is Dead! Long Live BI! With Colin Zima
2025-07-22 · 04:30
Colin Zima
– CEO
@ Omni
Product managers for BI platforms have it easy. They "just" need to have the dev team build a tool that gives all types of users access to all of the data they should be allowed to see in a way that is quick, simple, and clear while preventing them from pulling data that can be misinterpreted. Of course, there are a lot of different types of users—from the C-level executive who wants ready access to high-level metrics all the way to the analyst or data scientist who wants to drop into a SQL flow state to everyone in between. And sometimes the tool needs to provide structured dashboards, while at other times it needs to be a mechanism for ad hoc analysis. Maybe the product manager's job is actually…impossible? Past Looker CAO and current Omni CEO Colin Zima joined this episode for a lively discussion on the subject! Cyberattacks act like water, finding their way in any crack over time. The tools are the same: filters (firewalls), backflow preventers (data diodes), leak detection. Both have conflicts between designers and practitioners, and nobody seems to care about either plumbing or cybersecurity until something has gone terribly wrong. This session uses plumbing as a guide for those to want to better understand good OT cybersecurity practices, how to use forward thinking design to limit the impact of an attack (“if you didn’t put that pool on the roof, you wouldn’t have to worry about it leaking”), and how to explain exactly what it is you do in OT cybersecurity to people who influence your budget, staff, and quality of life. We’ve had over 2000 years of plumbing experience to learn what works. We’ve got to get OT cybersecurity right… right now. Part 2: OT Data Diodes - What's New in One-Way Wish you could get data out of legacy systems that don't belong on the internet? Want to get an x-ray view into air-gapped networks to detect insider threats? Data diodes may be the answer for your next industrial monitoring or cybersecurity upgrade. Learn more about what's new in the data diode category and hear about new use cases enabled by recent advancements to the technology. Please join PyData Pittsburgh for the talk Data Engineering: The Code & Supply Compensation Survey Report from Colin Dean, managing director of Code & Supply Co.! About the talk Code & Supply invested in building a data analysis and document authorship pipeline to produce its latest Compensation Survey Report. Building on its experience in previous iterations, C&S used Python, Jupyter notebooks, pandas, Polars, Plotly, pandoc, and many other tools to analyze responses from more than 800 people and produce a more than 100 page report. In this presentation, Colin Dean will discuss the survey and analysis effort, which can serve as an example of how to get started doing data science, building consistent data visualizations, and collaborating on a large scientific paper. Getting to the event We'll be at Code & Supply Workspace & Community Center. Attendees are welcome to use the parking lot associated with the building off St Clair Street. The front door on Friendship Avenue will be open but is stairs-only. There's an elevator by the parking lot entrance.
