When: Thursday 18th September 2025 Time: arrive for 5:45pm with talks starting from 6pm start prompt. Location: Ecosurety, 2nd Floor, 4 Colston Ave, Bristol, BS1 4ST Complimentary drinks & pizza provided by our sponsor Method Resourcing Solutions. Sit tight for venue details, we'll have them for you ASAP! Session 1 - Fabricating Your Move: A Tailored Path from Power BI Premium to Fabric - David Mitchell As Microsoft Power BI evolves into Fabric, organizations gain powerful new capabilities—but also face the challenge of transitioning from Premium capacities. In this session, discover a streamlined, automated approach to migrating from Power BI Premium to Fabric capacities using tools developed within Semantic Link Labs. We’ll cover:
Learn how to future-proof your analytics environment with confidence, efficiency, and continuity for your users. About David David Mitchell is a Cloud Solutions Architect at Microsoft, and is a key contributor to the migration solution. He brings over 10 years’ experience working in Information Analysis, Data Warehousing and Data Engineering. Session 2 - Getting Started with Terraform and CI/CD for your Fabric Projects - Anna-Maria Wykes Microsoft Fabric is transforming how organizations build unified data platforms for analytics, data science, and business intelligence. Until recently, deploying and managing Fabric resources required manual effort or adhoc automation. That changed with the release of the Terraform provider for Microsoft Fabric last year, enabling teams to manage Fabric infrastructure as code. In this session, you'll learn how to get started using Terraform to provision and manage Microsoft Fabric components — including workspaces, pipelines, dataflows, and more — in a repeatable and scalable way. We'll cover core Terraform concepts, walk through practical examples, and share best practices for integrating with Azure and CI/CD workflows. By the end of the session, you'll be equipped to bring automation, consistency, and governance to your Microsoft Fabric environments using Terraform. About Anna Anna is a veteran software and data engineer as well as a Microsoft AI MVP, boasting over 18 years of experience. She has undertaken various projects, including real-time analytics with Scala and Kafka, constructing Data Lakes with Spark, and applying engineering to Data Science. Anna currently serves as a RSA (Resident Solution Architect) and consultant. With a genuine passion for data, she endeavours to bridge the gap between Software Development and Data Science. Anna's other areas of interest include DevOps (DataOps, MLOps, LLMOps), Agile methodologies, and organizing or participating in local Code Clubs. We all look forward to seeing you there!! |

Emergence: When More Is Different
2025-08-14
What happens when a system becomes more than just the sum of its parts? In this session, we’ll explore the idea of emergence — the surprising patterns, behaviors, and structures that arise when simple elements interact in complex ways. We’ll begin with a substantial presentation that draws on two key papers: • Philip Anderson’s classic “More Is Different”, which argues that new rules emerge at higher levels of complexity, even when the components are identical • And a more recent piece by David Krakauer and Melanie Mitchell, exploring how emergence plays out in evolutionary and computational systems composed of diverse, interacting elements. While the presentation will provide key framing, we’ll pause throughout for brief questions or comments. The main open discussion will follow the talk, allowing space for deeper exploration, debate, and connection. You’re welcome to join whether you’ve read the papers or not — many of our members enjoy simply absorbing the flow of ideas — but some find the experience more engaging with a bit of background. For those interested, both papers and discussion links will be shared in our group Discord (link will be posted in the comments). |

In this session, we’ll start with the basics of Power BI Embedded, showing you how to take your reports beyond the workspace and into custom apps. Then, we’ll dive into a live demo where we’ll tweak some code in a real embedded solution—always a thrill, because who knows if it’ll actually work? 😅 Whether you’re a regular Power BI user or just curious, you’ll leave knowing why Embedded is the cooler, more adventurous sibling of Power BI. Optimizing and Automating Microsoft Fabric and Power BI with Semantic Link/LabsDavid Mitchell (Microsoft) This talk was originally presented by David's Microsoft colleague Michael Kovalsky earlier this year FabCon. Semantic Link and Semantic Link Labs have become essential tools for Power BI developers and admins using Microsoft Fabric to simplify many previously technically-challenging tasks. This session will demonstrate how to leverage Semantic Link and its open-source extension, Semantic Link Labs, and integrate them into your workflows. By the end of this session, attendees will be equipped with practical tools to optimise their semantic models and reports as well as automate tasks previously thought impossible. No prior experience with Python or Semantic Link is required. |

DetailsPBIMCR September 2024 sessionWhen: Thursday 26th September 2024 Time: arrive for 5:30pm onwards with talks starting from 6pm start prompt Location: Slalom - Bloc \| 17 Marble St \| 12th Floor \| Manchester \| M2 3AW \| Session will not be streamed over MS Teams September's PBIMCR will feature Session 1 Title: Profit & Loss Semantic Models in Power BI Abstract: Profitability is a key metric; any profits can be distributed back to shareholders (owners) either directly or indirectly. A profit and loss (P&L) statement answers high level questions - such as “what was net profit last year?” - and summarises key revenue (i.e., product revenue) and expense (i.e., Research & Development) items. Unlike static reports, a P&L semantic model contains the detail; this allows end-users to ask questions such as “what was R&D spending broken down by a particular research project, fiscal period, or legal entity?.” A semantic model also allows end-users to consume information using copilot prompts, Power BI reports, or Pivot Tables and formulas in Excel. In this session, we will go through: Why you should build an income statement semantic model. How to use an accelerator to speed up development. The key questions you need to ask stakeholders. The challenges in building a P&L income statement. Speaker 2: David Mitchell (Microsoft) Fabricating Your Move: A Tailored Path from Power BI Premium to Fabric As Power BI evolves into Microsoft Fabric, transitioning from Premium to Fabric capacities unlocks new possibilities. In this session, discover a streamlined, automated solution using Semantic Link Labs that ensures a smooth migration, enhancing your analytics capabilities. We’ll explore key features, benefits, and demonstrate the process in action, equipping you with the tools to effortlessly embrace Fabric. Join us to learn how to future-proof your analytics environment with minimal effort and maximum efficiency. David is a Senior Cloud Solution Architect at Microsoft, specializing in Data & AI, mainly focusing on the following areas: • Microsoft Fabric • Power BI • Azure DevOps / DataOps • Azure SQL David has worked in data and analytics since 2009 and previously worked at a Microsoft Gold Partner prior to joining Microsoft.
