Make sure to arrive on time! Please provide your first and last name for the registration because this is required for the venue's entry policy. If you cannot attend, please cancel your spot so others are able to join as the space is limited. Host: GetYourGuide is excited to welcome you to this month's version of PyData. ************************************************************************** The Lineup for the evening Talk 1: AI-Powered Carbon Emission Analytics from Public Transit Data - BVG Case Study Abstract: Imagine planning your route on Google Maps and alongside travel time, walking distance, and number of transfers, you also see the carbon footprint of each route. This project brings that idea to life by integrating real-time BVG transit data with an AI-powered emissions engine. Using segment-level routing information from Berlin’s public transport API, the system estimates CO₂ emissions for each journey based on the transport mode and distance. The dashboard calculates, visualizes, and even forecasts emissions over time using machine learning techniques like Prophet, while also detecting emission spikes and anomalies. It goes a step further by integrating a language model that explains emissions in plain language and recommends greener alternatives. The goal: to make sustainable commuting as easy and intuitive as choosing the fastest or cheapest route. Speaker: Sirisha Padmasekhar Bio: Sirisha is a data scientist on the growth team at a queer social app, where she dives into data to uncover patterns in user behavior, retention, and content impact. She's especially drawn to data passion projects, anything that helps people see things a little more clearly through numbers and storytelling. Outside of work, she hosts a podcast where she interviews people from different walks of life, creating space for warm, honest conversations. For Sirisha, data and stories go hand in hand, both start with curiosity. Talk 2: Lessons in Data Visualization from My Academic Journey Abstract: In this short talk, I’ll share practical opinions and approaches to data visualisation developed over years of storytelling to biologists in academia. Expect simple tweaks and tips to make your visuals more impactful and clear—without extra overhead—along with best practices from scientific publishing that I believe can benefit industry. These are personal takeaways that I hope will be useful in your day-to-day as well. Speaker: Saulius Lukauskas Bio: Saulius Lukauskas is a data scientist with a Ph.D. in machine learning and an academic background in computational biology. He is currently a Data Science Manager at GetYourGuide, where he develops AI solutions to help suppliers deliver outstanding travel experiences. Sweet Summer Child Score is an open source library to identify potential AI harms. A truism in tech is that we're good at asking 'can' we do it but not 'should' we do it. This library offers a system scan to quickly identify potential harms, and build the capability of relative risk assessment. SSCS does not explore the specifics of your stack or technical implementation -- instead it takes a step back to look at the ecosystem your technology will be deployed in, and the implementation choices which define the seam between your system and the broader world. |

PyData Berlin 2024 June Meetup
2024-06-19 · 16:30
Welcome to the PyData Berlin June meetup! We would like to welcome you all starting from 18:30. There will be food and drinks. The talks begin around 19.00. Please provide your first and last name for the registration because this is required for the venue's entry policy. If you cannot attend, please cancel your spot so others are able to join as the space is limited. Host: SPICED Academy is excited to welcome you for this month's version of PyData. At SPICED Academy, we connect the next tech success stories to their futures. Our intensive bootcamps in Data Science, Data Analytics, UX/UI, Java Development and Web Development teach the most up-to-date, in-demand skills on the market. ************************************************************************** The Lineup for the evening Talk 1: FormatAI: Structuring Unstructured Text using generative AI Abstract: In the world of Natural Language Processing (NLP), the task of structuring unstructured text is akin to a translation task from free text into standardized formats like SQL or JSON. Generative AI is a great tool for this task, however, transformer-based translation models, such as GPT, sometimes struggle to adhere to the desired format, and to support the variety of expression of a natural language. In this session as we delve into the intricacies of using transformer-based models to extract information from natural language to a predefined structure. We'll explore effective best practices, including the Constrained Generative AI, a technique that can entirely eliminate syntactic errors. Additionally, we will journey through preprocessing, data generation and augmentation methods and training strategies, showcasing how these methodologies helped us achieve near-perfect accuracy in extracting dates and times within textual data. By the end of the session, you will gain insights into harnessing generative AI for structured output, opening doors to more accurate and efficient NLP applications. Speaker: Oren Matar is a principal data scientist and algorithms developer, working at Anaplan, with a background in social sciences and Bayesian methods. I’m specializing in NLP and time series forecasting particularly in the field of supply chain forecasting. Talk 2: Probably Fun - games to teach statistics Abstract: I am currently field-testing gamified lessons for my statistics classes. "gamified" means playing with cards, dice, puzzles and more in a face-to-face classroom and then analyze the underlying statistical concepts. The games are a great way to build intrinsic motivation in students, promote understanding and foster cooperation among groups. Speaker: Kristian Rother is a freelance Python trainer who wrote his first lines of Python in the year `#07cf`. After a career writing software for life science research, he has been teaching Python, Data Analysis and Machine Learning throughout Europe since 2011. More recently, he has built data pipelines for the real estate and medical sector. Kristian has translated 5 Python books and written 2 more himself, in addition to numerous teaching guides. Kristian has collected 308 stars on Advent of Code. His knowledge about async is, unfortunately, miserable. His favorite Python module is `re`. Kristian believes everybody can learn programming. You can find Kristian's teaching materials on https://www.academis.eu Lightning talks There will be slots for 2-3 Lightning Talks (3-5 Minutes for each). Kindly let us know if you would like to present something at the start of the meetup :) *** NumFOCUS Code of Conduct THE SHORT VERSION Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down others. IN-PERSON: Kafka Enterprise Strategies: Best Practices
2023-06-26 · 16:45
🔥 Greetings to all Kafka enthusiasts! Following the tremendous achievement of the previous Kafka meet-up in April, we are delighted to declare the forthcoming edition. OSO are teaming up with Sainsbury's, special sponsor for this event, to deliver an exciting program of talks that you won't want to miss! ** Since this event will take place in a Sainsbury's office, for security purposes, you must register in your ID name order to gain entry. Register from here (scroll down for registry in the event page). When: ⏰ Monday 26th June 2023 5.45 - 8:30 pm Where:📍33 Holborn, London EC4A 1AA Nearest Tube Stations: 🚇 Central Line: St. Pauls & Chancery Lane, Elizabeth Line: Farringdon 🎙️ \~Talk 1\~ Talk Title: Kafka enterprise strategy to evolve with demand Summary: In this talk we are going to navigate through the transformation journey of the Supply Chain BU adopting Kafka with microservices in an event-driven architecture to deliver better value to customers and have a look at the current presence of Kafka in Sainsbury’s. We will go over insights of early days, lessons learnt and successful governance patterns which made the onboarding smoother as time went. We will also review the different tooling involved in making this journey successful not only for business but for developers, along with leveraging Kafka community driven projects such as Kafka Connect. We will conclude on where the Kafka landscape and architecture is headed. Key talk takeaways:
🗣️ Speaker: John Mille (GitHub @johnpreston) – Principal Cloud Engineer at Sainsbury’s Coming from a Net/Sys admin background, John has been working with AWS (Amazon Web Services) and distributed systems since before he graduated. Introduced to Kafka on the job, he builds Open-Source tooling to help with Kafka Governance automation and enjoys occasional blogging, to share his experiences and help others. 🎙️ \~Talk 2\~ Talk Title: Enforcing Kafka Best Practices Summary: Kafka's flexibility and configurability have contributed to its widespread adoption, but they also pose challenges. The ability to configure applications client-side can lead to inefficiencies and performance issues within the Kafka cluster. Conduktor has encountered numerous instances of such issues reported by their customers, including improperly configured producers, consumer groups with excessive members, and mixed data and schema in topics unintentionally. These issues often go unnoticed by the client application but significantly impact the performance of the Kafka cluster. In this session, join us on a detective hunt as we explore the tools and metrics used to identify misconfigurations in clients. We will discuss strategies for addressing these issues once discovered and provide insights on preventing future occurrences. 🗣️ Speaker: Tom Scott: Principal Engineer, Conduktor Long time enthusiast of Kafka and all things data integration, Tom has more than 10yrs experience (5yrs+ Kafka) in innovative and efficient ways to store, query and move data. Currently working at Conduktor, Tom is building multi-tenant, on-prem and cloud Kafka services to attack common Kafka pain points and break down barriers to starting your data journey. 🗓️ Schedule: The full schedule for the evening is as follows: 17:45 - Doors open (please arrive on time) 18:00 - Kick-Off 18:10 - Kafka enterprise strategy to evolve with demand + Q&A 18:50 - Break 19:00 - Enforcing Kafka Best Practices + Q&A 19:40 - Food, drinks and networking Catering will be provided to all attendees following the talks. PyData Berlin 2023 June Meetup
2023-06-21 · 16:00
Welcome to the wonderful June of Pydata Berlin meetup !! We would like to welcome you all starting from 18:00. The talks begin around 18.45. Please be on time. Doors close at 18:30. Please provide your first and last name for the registration because this is required for the venue's entry policy. If you cannot attend, please cancel your spot so others are able to join as the space is limited. ************************************************************************** The Lineup for the Evening Talk 1: Debugging your reasoning (and code) with LLMs Speaker: Jose Quesada Abstract: You are familiar with using LLMs to be more effective while programming. Probably you get mediocre code quality, and debug it using your best judgment. The state of the art is moving fast and currently LLMs can self-debug the code they produce (by using the equivalent of rubber duck debugging). So what parts of programming do humans do better than machines? Can you improve these? In this talk I'll make the case that practical reasoning is one of these human advantages, and that you can improve it following a method (asking the assertibility question: 'what argument or evidence would justify me in believing the conclusion?'). We will see examples of how you can use this method to improve your daily life thinking. Programming has a distinct edge over general thinking - you can run the code and see if the result aligns with your expectations. However, when we're thinking in plain English, we lack this benefit. Throughout this discussion, I'll draw parallels. My hope is that you'll walk away with a practical technique to elevate your thinking. Lightning talks Interactive session Closing There will be slots for 2-3 Lightning Talks (5-6 Minutes for each). Kindly let us know if you would like to present something [email protected] *** NumFOCUS Code of Conduct THE SHORT VERSION Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down others. Behave professionally.
