Title & Speakers Event

Duration: 60 minutes Level: Beginner

Pester is the Testing framework for PowerShell code. Think tSQLt for PowerShell. In this beginner friendly follow-along, you will learn how to write Pester tests from scratch.

We will start from existing code that has no tests. And we will end with code that is fully covered with tests, (and built in CI/CD pipeline if we have time.)

You will see the basic shapes of functions, and understand how to write tests for them. You will examine how to write unit and integration tests. And you will ensure that your code coverage does not drop under 75%.

This practical lesson will arm you with knowledge that is easy to translate to real-life, and that will help you ship better and more reliable code.

All of the code will be made available and you will also be able to follow along

No prior Pester experience required - just bring your curiosity and willingness to learn!

Introduction to Pester ~ Rob Sewell

DOUBLE MEETING!!!!!

Rob Sewell - Commits - What's the point? Tips for data professionals Committing code is an integral part of the development lifecycle. However, not all commits or commit messages are created equal. As more data professionals are required or expected to use source control within a continuous integration or deployment solution, a lack of good information is reducing the efficacy and usefulness of commit messages. In this session we will explore the source control system git, what makes a commit and what a commit message is for. We will also learn what makes a good, and a bad, commit message and how to automatically link commit messages to User Stories and release notes.

When the firehose causes the burnout How Do we create a firebreak?

Burnout is complex, and as it is unique to every person, it can be difficult to define and identify. Let me help you with that. Over the past few years burnout has become commonly mentioned in conversations about work life balance, about work from home, about hybrid working, about returning to the office. As is often the case when a newer issue becomes a commonly used buzzword, it's true definition and potential causes have become watered down. Even the description of the recognized symptoms, prevention and treatments has become diluted. The realities of dealing with burnout, both in the workplace and in our personal lives, have been lost in the smoke. In this session we will be reminded of what burnout actually looks like, how it is correctly defined, and how we can avoid some of the triggers. I will share my professional experiences with a variety of different symptoms and issues and introduce you to some of the approaches that I encourage people to use. You will leave this session having added tools to your toolbox that are relatively straightforward, hopefully memorable, and generic enough that they will apply to the majority of us.

19:45 - 20:30 Deploy your Azure Data Solutions with Bicep and Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions by Rob Sewell

Lets migrate to the cloud.

You can go to the portal and click in the blades and manually create all of the resources that you need. Such as Azure SQL Databases, Azure SQL VMs, Azure Arc Enabled Managed Instances, Azure Databricks or Azure Data Factory for example. You will want to ensure that they are all logging to Log Analytics and have monitoring enabled, maybe you need all of them to have Private Endpoints set up.

But you will forget something, you will mistype something, you will need to create multiple environments and they will need to be the same. Manually creating things is time consuming and mistake prone. Humans make mistakes.

Come and join me and I will show you how to deploy your data infrastructure into Azure using Bicep and Azure DevOps. How to ensure that when you deploy your resources, you automatically include Log Analytics or monitoring or add Private Endpoints.

You will learn • What Bicep is • How to compose Bicep with VS Code • How to create a pipeline in Azure DevOps to deploy the code • How to add Logging and Monitoring to your Azure Data Platform • How to create modules so that you can ensure that you deploy all of the resources that you require quickly, easily and repeatedly

You are • Someone interested in Infrastructure as Code for cloud data resources • Interested in learning new things • Want to deploy consistently to Azure • Never heard of Bicep or pipelines

Agenda 18:00 - 18:15 - Welcome 18:15 - 19:00 - Old Name - New CLI - why you should take a look at sqlcmd - Rob Sewell Introduced with SQL Server 2005 and replacing osql, sqlcmd has been a part of SQL Server professionals toolbox for a long time now. Many people only know it from the sqlcmd mode switch in SSMS, while others use it within automation as a lightweight easily available query runner. I have long recommended that DBAs are familiar with using it as it may be the only option to query an instance in severe emergencies. Times they are a changing. There is a new sqlcmd available and it has some awesome new capabilities. Let me introduce you to the new sqlcmd in a fun filled demo session and show you the new things it can do and why they will be of benefit to all Data Professionals We will cover deploying a database into a container from a backup with one command. Querying it, Opening it in Azure Data Studio, all from the command line and much more.

18:30 - 19:15 From Theory to Practice - Building a Data Mesh Architecture in Azure by Paul Andrew

The principals of a data mesh architecture have been around for a while now, but we still don’t have a clear way to deliver such a platform in Azure. Are the concepts so abstract that it’s hard to translate the principals into real world requirements and maybe even harder to think about what technology you might need to deploy within your Azure tenant.

In this session, we’ll explore options for building scalable data products in Azure, following Data Mesh architecture principals. Turning the theory into practice. What data storage technology should be used? Does it matter? What endpoints should be exposed for the products across the overall mesh? And what resource(s) should sit at the centre of the Data Mesh? Answers to all these questions are more as we turn the theory of a Data Mesh architecture into practice. Including, how to dissect the planes of the Data Mesh using Azure concepts.

19:15 - 19:45 Pizza and Networking

--------------

19:45 - 20:30 Migrating to Azure - Panel QnA with **Paul Andrew, Rob Sewell **and Dan Addy

Sept23 | East Midlands Data | Nottingham | Speaker - Rob Sewell

DataSaturday Oslo is coming back on September 2nd! And with the free main event we also offer full day classes on select topics at a very low price! Please note that this is a paid event and you must register with the Eventbrite site to attend! Hybrid DBA pre-con registration

The role of a DBA is evolving in today's hybrid computing landscape, where applications are deployed on both on-premises and cloud platforms. This training day is specifically designed for DBAs who are required to work in a hybrid environment, where some applications use Platform as a Service databases while others are supported on-premises or on Azure VMs. We will provide you with a hands-on experience in using automation tooling including PowerShell and community-developed modules such as dbatools, dbachecks, and ImportExcel, to automate many everyday tasks in your estate, whether it is totally on-prem, hybrid, or 100% cloud. You will learn from Jess Pomfret and Rob Sewell, two of the dbatools in a Month of Lunches authors, how to take your Data Platform skills to the next level. We will also cover the basic concept of infrastructure as code. You will learn how to manage your infrastructure through code, allowing you to automate the provisioning, configuration, and management of your SQL Server instances and PaaS services. You will also see how this approach can improve the reliability and consistency of your environment, reduce errors, and increase the efficiency of your operations. Finally, we will touch on how you can use GitHub Actions or Azure Functions to automate your workflows and integrate with other tools in your environment. You will learn how to create workflows that trigger when specific events occur, such as a new pull request or a database schema change and automate the execution of scripts or the deployment of changes to your SQL Server instances. This approach will help you streamline your operations, reduce manual intervention, and improve the overall quality of your work. Overall, this training day will provide you with a comprehensive set of skills to manage your hybrid SQL Server estate. There are many tools for you to add to your toolbox and we’ll show you how to get the most out of your available time and effort by utilising PowerShell, a collection of community-written modules with some CI\CD tools mixed in. Whether you are a senior or junior DBA, a developer who interacts with SQL Server, an accidental DBA, or someone with DevOps in your job title, this training is for you. You will improve your PowerShell skills for SQL Server and reduce the time you and your team spend administering SQL Server. You do not need any specific equipment or tools for this training, but we recommend bringing something to take notes with. All scripts and slides will be provided to you, and you will have the opportunity to follow along with most of the demos on a machine that can run Docker or with PowerShell v5 or above and a SQL Server 2012 or above instance.

Join us for a wonderful day of PowerShell and SQL, full of demos and useful solutions that you will be able to take back to your workplace.
