FLINTA Talk Night: Towards More Responsible AI
2025-03-19 · 18:00
Due to the BVG strike, we will start the event later at 19:00. Please don't worry about being late and join us if you can! You’ve probably heard a lot about AI—how it’s changing industries, making decisions, and even shaping our daily lives. But did you know that AI can also be biased? Join us for two insightfult talks about bias in AI and tools like Sweet Summer Child Score that can help mitigate the harm. **IMPORTANT** Please sign-up via Luma on Ape Unit's event page: https://lu.ma/e636qkuc?utm_source=eit ✍️ Event description This meetup is hosted by Empowered in Tech together with Ape Unit. Our goal for this event is to make the topic of bias in AI more accessible to everyone—regardless of background or expertise. We’ll explore what AI bias is, the real-world impact it has, and what we can do to reduce its harm. You don’t need to be an expert or work in tech—all perspectives are welcome! Talk: Sweet Summer Child Score Sweet Summer Child Score is an open-source library to identify potential AI harms. A truism in tech is that we're good at asking "can we do it", but not "should we do it". Attempting to tackle the latter, this library offers a system scan to quickly identify potential harms, and build the capability of relative risk assessment. SSCS does not explore the specifics of your stack or technical implementation -- instead it takes a step back to look at the ecosystem your technology will be deployed in, and the implementation choices which define the seam between your system and the broader world. Put simply, this is an attempt to see the forest, not the trees. Links: The project and GitHub repos are online at https://summerchild.dev [SECOND TALK CANCELLED: Talk: Exploring fairlearn and practical strategies for assessing and mitigating harm in AI systems As AI becomes a more significant part of our everyday lives, ensuring these systems are fair is more important than ever. In this session, we’ll discuss how to define fairness and the potential harms our algorithms can have on people and society. We’ll introduce fairlearn, a community-driven, open-source project that offers practical tools for assessing and mitigating harm in AI systems. We’ll also explore how to discuss bias, different types of harm, the idea of group fairness and how they all relate to fairlearn’s toolkit. To make it all concrete, we’ll walk through a real-world example of assessing fairness and share some hands-on strategies you can use to mitigate harm in your own ML projects. Join it here at 6:40PM 🗣️Rory Graves: A Life in Scala Software development is full of competing demands—speed, reliability, scalability, flexibility, and affordability. Everyone wants all of them, and they want them now. But building software that delivers on all these fronts is much harder than it seems. Having used Scala as his primary language since 2010 and being deeply involved in its community, Rory has seen how different programming paradigms, tools, and mental models shape software development. This talk will explore key lessons from his career—how to think about software and software careers, the trade-offs of different paradigms and abstraction levels, and why for him Scala hits the sweet spot for building robust, scalable systems easily. Along the way, we will discuss real-world insights on tools, best practices, and how to navigate the ever-changing landscape of software engineering. Whether you’re considering Scala for your future projects or simply thinking about the next steps in your career, this talk will give you perspectives that go beyond the code. ⭐ Speaker ⭐ Rory has been passionate about coding for as long as he can remember—starting with writing games in BASIC far too many years ago. Over a 30+ year career, he has worked across a vast range of systems, from embedded systems to distributed internet-scale bidding engines. His experience spans industries, company sizes (from two-person startups to multinational corporations), and programming paradigms. A long-time advocate of Scala, Rory has contributed to numerous open-source projects, including performance optimizations in the Scala compiler. Today, he works in a hybrid role supporting applied AI and ML research while continuing to mentor developers and share knowledge through public speaking. Outside of software, Rory is a martial artist, a windmill tour guide, and a passionate mentor of programming and public speaking. 🗣️ Noel Welsh: Designing with Duality How can we systematically design software? One way is to use dualities, which allows us to connect implementation techniques, such as FP and OO (otherwise known as data and codata), as different instantiations of the same underlying model. In this talk, we'll explore duality as a design strategy for interpreters, and show that four different approaches to writing an interpreter inner loop fall out as applications of duality. This allows us to pick the implementation that best suits our needs, and makes creating software less a matter of inspiration and more the application of a consistent and repeatable process. ⭐ Speaker ⭐ Noel is developer, mentor, and trainer who works with leading companies in the UK and USA. He fell in love with functional programming when he discovered PLT Scheme (now Racket) shortly after graduation, and the majority of his work since has involved functional programming and, more recently, Scala. ———————————————————— 🗣️ Would you like to present, but are not sure how to start? Give a talk with us and you'll receive mentorship from a trained toastmaster! Get in touch through this form and we'll get you started 🏡 Interested in hosting or supporting us? Please get in touch through this form and we can discuss how you can get involved. 📜 All London Scala User Group events operate under the Scala Community Code of Conduct: [https://www.scala-lang.org/conduct/](https://www.scala-lang.org/conduct/) We encourage each of you to report the breach of the conduct, either anonymously through this form or by contacting one of our team members. We guarantee privacy and confidentiality, as well as that we will take your report seriously and react quickly. |

PyData Berlin 2024 August Meetup
2024-08-14 · 16:00
Welcome to the PyData Berlin August meetup! Please provide your first and last name, current role and organization name for the registration because this is required for the venue's entry policy. If you cannot attend, please cancel your spot so others are able to join as the space is limited. Host: Google Cloud is excited to welcome you for this month's version of PyData. Agenda:
************************************************************************** The Lineup for the evening Talk 1: Multi-agent Systems with Mistral AI, Milvus and Llama-agents Abstract: Agentic systems are on the rise, helping developers create intelligent, autonomous systems. LLMs are becoming more and more capable of following diverse sets of instructions, making them ideal for managing these agents. This advancement opens up numerous possibilities for handling complex tasks with minimal human intervention in so many areas. In this talk, we will see how to build agents using llama-agents. We’ll also explore how combining different LLMs can enable various actions. For simpler tasks, we'll use Mistral Nemo, a smaller and more cost-effective model, and Mistral Large for orchestrating different agents. Speaker: Stephen Batifol Stephen is a Developer Advocate at Zilliz. He previously worked as a Machine Learning Engineer at Wolt, where he created and worked on the ML Platform, and previously as a Data Scientist at Brevo. Stephen studied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. He is a founding member of the MLOps.community Berlin group, where he organizes Meetups and hackathons. He enjoys boxing and surfing. Talk 2: Bayes by Hand Abstract: Discover how powerful Bayesian modelling can be with a pen and paper, or even in your head! Or - Bayes, the good bits! The focus is on Bayes as a thinking tool, rather than on code and algorithms. Think eliciting and updating priors, updating estimates rigorously with incoming data, etc. This approach reacts to the need for more disciplined estimation in business contexts, while wanting to include non-stats and non-dev stakeholders in the process. Bayes By Hand can be used for sketching out baselines, cross-disciplinary collaborations, improved decision making, and more. Let's get back to the blackboard my friends, and do some modelling by hand! Speaker: Laura Summers Laura is a very technical designer™️. She's the founder of Debias AI, (debias.ai) and the human behind Sweet Summer Child Score (summerchild.dev), Ethics Litmus Tests (ethical-litmus.site), fairXiv (fairxiv.org), the Melbourne Fair ML reading group (groups.io/g/fair-ml). Laura is passionate about feminism, digital rights and designing for privacy. She speaks, writes and runs workshops at the intersection of design and technology. Lightning talks There will be slots for 2-3 Lightning Talks (3-5 Minutes for each). Kindly let us know if you would like to present something at the start of the meetup :) *** NumFOCUS Code of Conduct THE SHORT VERSION Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down others. Behave professionally. Remember that harassment and sexist, racist, or exclusionary jokes are not appropriate for NumFOCUS. All communication should be appropriate for a professional audience including people of many different backgrounds. Sexual language and imagery are not appropriate. Sweet Summer Child Score is an open source library to identify potential AI harms. A truism in tech is that we're good at asking 'can' we do it but not 'should' we do it. This library offers a system scan to quickly identify potential harms, and build the capability of relative risk assessment. SSCS does not explore the specifics of your stack or technical implementation -- instead it takes a step back to look at the ecosystem your technology will be deployed in, and the implementation choices which define the seam between your system and the broader world. |

London and Kraków Joint Meetup: Jacob Wang and Paweł Marks
2024-03-14 · 17:45
🎉 The London Scala User Group is having a joint meetup with Krakow! 🎉 Come along to the London Scala Talks! This month, we'll be hearing from Jacob Wang (London) and Paweł Marks (streamed from Krakow Scala User Group). Whether you're a complete beginner to creative coding or an experienced Scala tinkerer, there's plenty to enjoy. We look forward to seeing you! ———————————————————— If you can't make it in person, join the webinar at: https://3ds.zoom.us/j/81445941841?pwd=Ykp6YVVMWGdnRFNZUkovVEcza3FvZz09 Passcode: 719040 ———————————————————— *Agenda* 5:45pm - 🍻 Doors open. Come along and grab a drink! 6:15pm - 🗣️ Jacob Wang: Deep Dive into Context Propagation and Otel4s 7:00pm - 🍻 Intermission 7:15pm - 🗣️ Paweł Marks: Conjuring types from the Void 8:00pm - 🍕 Intermission: Join us for some free food and drinks! Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options are provided. Let us know if you'd like something special - we'd be happy to accommodate. 9:00pm - 🍻 Join us in a pub to discuss the talks! ———————————————————— 🗣️ Jacob Wang:Deep Dive into Context Propagation and Otel4s In this talk, we will look at various ways in Scala where "context" can be passed around without using function parameters. We'll investigate how each of these work under the hood, and use this knowledge to make otel4s and java libraries work together. (otel4s is an OpenTelemetry implementation for Typelevel ecosystem) ———————————————————— ⭐ Jacob Wang ⭐ Jacob is a software developer at Medidata. He is passionate about better ways to solve problems with software, whether that’s functional programming, better tools or a cat on his lap. ———————————————————— 🗣️ Paweł Marks: Conjuring types from the Void We like static typing. It gives us a sense of safety, correct code, and those sweet, sweet suggestions in the IDE. But the world we live in is not a type-safe place. The code we write is just a tiny airship of compile-time verification floating over the void full of amorphous jsons, raw data frames, or SQL results full of nulls. I will be here to show you how to conjure some types from this void. This won't be another ORM, annotation processor, or other heavy codegen you know from other languages. I will show you the tools added to Scala 3 to deal with dynamic data. They are lightweight, codegen- and reflection-free, and most importantly, have great support in the IDEs. You will also see how to create a simple, intuitive, and beginner-friendly API that will use the powerful features of Scala under the hood. ———————————————————— ⭐ Paweł Marks ⭐ Paweł is involved in shaping the future of Scala 3 as a member of the Scala Improvement Process Committee and as a leader of the compiler team at VirtusLab in Krakow, Poland. Having been involved as a developer and architect in JVM tooling for many years, in 2020, he returned to Scala - his favorite language from college - and became part of the compiler team shortly after. He is now mainly responsible for the Scala release cycle and helping other compiler developers. ———————————————————— 🗣️ Would you like to present, but are not sure how to start? Give a talk with us and you'll receive mentorship from a trained toastmaster! Get in touch and we'll get you started:https://forms.gle/zv5i9eeto1BsnSwe8 🏡 Interested in hosting or supporting us? Please get in touch and we can discuss how you can get involved:https://forms.gle/3SX3Bm6zHqVodBaMA 📜 All London Scala User Group events operate under the Scala Community Code of Conduct: https://www.scala-lang.org/conduct/ We encourage each of you to report the breach of the conduct, either anonymously or by contacting one of our team members. We guarantee privacy and confidentiality, as well as that we will take your report seriously and react quickly. https://forms.gle/9PMMorUWgBnbk1mm6 |
