In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of programming a quantum computer. We will use the IBM Quantum platform to create quantum circuits both visually using the Circuit Composer and with Python code using the open source Qiskit framework. You will have the opportunity to run your circuits using quantum simulators and on real quantum computers in the IBM Cloud. Attendees should sign-up for a free account on the IBM Quantum platform beforehand at https://quantum-computing.ibm.com to best experience this hands-on session. Part of the 11-session Quantum Series (January–June).

Hands-on workshop to learn the fundamentals of programming a quantum computer using the IBM Quantum platform. We will use Circuit Composer to create quantum circuits visually and Python code with Qiskit. Attendees will run circuits on simulators and on real quantum computers in the IBM Cloud.
Introduction and overview of quantum computing and IBM Quantum. Includes motivation for quantum computing and how quantum computers work. Discusses the types of problems quantum computing might be applied to, the development roadmap, the IBM Quantum platform (tooling and interfaces), and the IBM Quantum ecosystem (IBM Quantum Network and the Qiskit community).
Overview of features of Qiskit and the IBM Quantum platform, including error mitigation and suppression techniques, circuit knitting methods, and a demonstration of a quantum chemistry calculation using Qiskit Nature.
In this session, we will examine features of Qiskit and the IBM Quantum platform that will help realize quantum advantage. The talk covers error mitigation and suppression techniques to improve results on current hardware, circuit knitting methods to perform large quantum calculations with fewer qubits, and a demonstration of a quantum chemistry calculation using Qiskit Nature.
