Senior Global Director of Sustainability Elsevier

Rachel Martin is Senior Global Director of Sustainability at Elsevier, where she leads data-driven climate and sustainability initiatives that influence both corporate strategy and the global publishing sector. She oversees Elsevier’s Climate Action program, embedding sustainability into operations and culture, achieving an 83% reduction in direct emissions and a 50% cut in business air travel since 2018. Rachel has shaped industry-leading resources, including The Power of Data to Advance the SDGs and a proof-of-concept GenAI tool to translate scientific findings into policy-ready summaries. She co-founded the Publishing 2030 Accelerator, delivering the first methodology to assess the carbon footprint of print books, a carbon label prototype, and a white paper on the profitability–sustainability trade-off. A recognized voice in global publishing, Rachel co-launched the UN SDG Publishers Compact and SDG Book Club, expanding local chapters worldwide. She chairs the STM Social Responsibility Committee and BIC Green Supply Chain Committee, driving collaborative tools like the SDG Roadmap for academic publishers. Through strategic vision, stakeholder engagement, and innovation in data analytics, Rachel advances sustainability impact across Elsevier and the wider publishing ecosystem.
