Sumit Chauhan heads up a wide portfolio of Microsoft 365 experiences and leads product, design and engineering teams for Microsoft Office’s flagship products and creator tools. Her portfolio includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Office AI, Designer as well as Microsoft 365’s video solutions such as Stream and Clipchamp. Her team is working to evolve the way we accomplish modern productivity across our lives, with a mission to create the next generation of authoring and storytelling experiences powered by new and powerful AI services.

Prior to this, Sumit led the Office Engineering team.  Her multi-disciplinary team was responsible for driving radical improvements in engineering workflow. She was responsible for developing systems, tools and telemetry across all new OS platforms and drove the services platform and infrastructure for over 60 Office services. Under her leadership, the Office team revolutionized its engineering methodology, moving from three-year cycles to continuous engineering with monthly "evergreen" releases. She also drove significant improvement on the core infrastructure for legacy engineering systems. 

Since joining Microsoft in 1996, Sumit has held numerous engineering leadership roles and is recognized for her technical acumen. Earlier in her career, Sumit focused on development in Excel and led the Access product through several releases.   

Education – Sumit attended the Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology in India where she graduated at the top of her Engineering class with a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering. She has a Masters in Computer Science from Louisiana State University.

Other Affiliations and Affiliations – In May 2021, Sumit was recognized by Forbes in the magazine’s 30 Inspirational Women series. She is an avid supporter and board member of Pratham Seattle – an innovative learning organization created to improve the quality of education in India. Established in 1995 to provide education to children in the slums of Mumbai, Pratham has grown in both scope and scale, with programs today reaching children and youth across the country.

Family/Other Interests – Sumit grew up in India and has lived in the Redmond for the last 20+ years. She is an avid traveler. Outside of Microsoft, she does her most important work as a mother to two fantastic girls.
