Steve Wade – CNCF Migration Specialist | Fixing Failed Kubernetes Transformations

You're brilliant at debugging code. But can you debug a conversation?

Research shows 78% of engineers believe others perceive less than 70% of their technical brilliance. That perception gap costs you £50,000 per year in salary, kills your best architectural decisions, and keeps your platforms unnecessarily complex.

In this highly interactive talk, Steve Wade (The Pragmatic CNCF Guy) reveals how the same systematic thinking that makes you a great engineer can transform you into an exceptional communicator. No fluffy soft skills—just proven techniques that work.

You'll learn: - The "killer question" that transforms any professional interaction - Three gestures that instantly boost your executive presence - How to explain complex architecture in ways that get stakeholders leaning in, not zoning out - Why your monotone delivery is sabotaging your brilliant ideas (and how to fix it)

Through live demonstrations, partner exercises, and real-world case studies, you'll practice techniques that helped one engineer get her previously-rejected platform rebuild approved and promoted to VP within six months.

Perfect for engineers who are tired of watching less-technical colleagues get promoted faster, and leaders who want their teams' technical brilliance to finally get the recognition it deserves.

Come ready to participate. Leave ready to be unstoppable.

Amanda Lee – International Director of Client Success @ Veracode

Strategies for Building Resilient Software in a Complex Ecosystem In an era where software development is accelerating rapidly, Veracode's latest research reveals a concerning trend: 50% of organisations are burdened by critical security debt, with 70% of these vulnerabilities originating from third-party code and the software supply chain. The average time to fix security flaws has increased to 8.5 months, marking a 47% rise over the past five years. This session will delve into the key findings of the State of Software Security report, offering a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape. Amanda will explore the five critical metrics identified by Veracode that benchmark security maturity and what defines a ‘leading’ or ‘lagging’ organisations. Attendees will gain insights into: - The impact of third-party code on security debt and strategies to mitigate associated risks. - The importance of remediation speed, with fast-acting teams reducing critical security debt by up to 75%. - The role of AI in enhancing remediation efforts and addressing the backlog of security debt. - Practical recommendations for improving security posture, including enhancing visibility across the software development lifecycle and prioritising vulnerabilities effectively.

Welcome to the DevSecOps London Gathering – May Edition! Join us as Amanda Lee from Veracode unpacks key insights from their latest State of Software Security report, revealing how leading organisations are tackling third-party vulnerabilities, accelerating remediation, and using AI to stay ahead.

We’re also joined by Matt Salmon for a timely and eye-opening talk: Hallucinated Code, Real Threats, which explores how AI coding assistants are introducing a new class of risks through hallucinated packages and malicious recommendations. As attackers turn their attention to open-source ecosystems and prompt injection techniques, it’s not just about securing code - it’s about securing the coder.

Whether you’re focused on strategy, development, or defence, this session will offer fresh insights, practical takeaways, and a look at where our threat landscape is headed next.

Join to learn how to assess your organization's security maturity, benchmark against industry leaders, and implement strategies to reduce security debt and enhance resilience in the face of evolving cybersecurity challenges.

Hallucinated Code, Real Threats: Malicious Packages in the Age of AI Synopsis: As AI coding assistants rapidly gain adoption, they’re introducing a new and largely unguarded attack vector: hallucinated packages and malicious code recommendations. This talk unpacks recent research - including real-world, nation-state-attributed attacks - revealing how AI can unknowingly guide developers to introduce compromised dependencies.

With attackers now targeting developers through open-source ecosystems and prompt injection techniques, it's no longer just about securing code - it's about securing the coder.

Learn what these emerging threats look like and how to start building defences before they take root in your pipeline

Security Debt in the Software Supply Chain & Malicious Packages in the age of AI

Tuesday 15th October is our 18th OpenUK London community meetup. This month we are discussing the dichotomy of can open source even be a business? Following last month's Economics of Open Source report, we will dive into and discuss the results and talk about how you can get the most out of your most often free open source contributions or how could it be a business?

We are kicking off a bit later this month but you can check in downstairs from 645. 7:00pm: Arrive, grab a bev, a slice and a chat. Scope out our swag table (bring pieces to contribute or trade!) 7:15 pm: Panel including Lee Wright, Liam Crilly, Amanda Brock, Matt Barker and Paula Kennedy, moderated by Jennifer Riggins Followed by an interactive fishbowl: five seats at the front of the room, with one always empty. If a fifth sits down, one of the others gets up. A continuous discussion that flows around a topic. Anyone is welcome to jump right into the "bowl" at any time with questions, topics or responses. 8:30-8:45 pm: Cleanup and see-ya-next-time.

Please remember to bring your I.D. if you are attending in person, as it is required to access the venue. Note the venue does not permit e-scooters or bicycles within the building.

Thank you to our sponsors Avanade for providing this great space and yummy pizza! By attending this or any OpenUK event, you are adhering to our Code of Respect and OpenUK's Competition Policy. Please read ahead.

If you would like to hear more about OpenUK's other events, you can join our Newsletter. After attending, look out for an email with an invite to our burgeoning Slack community as a way to keep in touch and support each other between activities.
