RLadies Ottawa invites you to our third annual data hackathon to celebrate International Women's day!

At our posit::conf(2024) watch party we watched “GitHub: How To Tell Your Professional Story” by Abigail Haddad. In this presentation Haddad highlighted the importance of building a compelling portfolio that not only highlights your skills but explains your professional identity.

For this year’s data challenge we encourage you to find YOUR passion project to round out your portfolio and develop your professional story! Take a look at your GitHub profile and ask yourself, what type of project is missing here?

For example, if you participated in last year’s challenge and created a traditional plot of some sort, this year try creating a visualization using a table, dashboard or another-outside-the-box presentation tool.

Guidelines

Although this challenge is hosted by R-Ladies Ottawa, you don’t have to use R to participate. You could use R, Python, a combination of the two, or anything you’re comfortable with!

No previous programming experience is required! If you’re interested in participating, but aren’t sure where to start, check out the recordings from our Introduction to R workshops that we hosted in early 2024. The workshops will give you a solid foundation in data analysis and data visualization using R.

While anyone is welcome to participate in the challenge and submit an entry, only submissions by women and gender minorities who reside in Canada will be eligible for the prizes.

You can participate individually, or in teams of up to 5 people!

The most creative submission, chosen by the organizing team, will receive a $25 virtual gift card to Maker House, generously donated by them. Maker House offers a curated collection of gifts and homewares, crafted locally in Ottawa and Canada 🍁

How to submit an entry

This will be a month-long data challenge, and you’ll have until April 4th to submit your entry. Your submission can be in any form you like – it can be a Quarto document, an image, a link to a webpage, or a link to a video, for example.

There are two options for submitting an entry:

• Option 1 (preferred option): If you have experience with GitHub and Quarto, you can create a pull request on this repository and add your submission to the “Submissions” part of this page
• Option 2: If you don’t have experience with GitHub, you can email [email protected] a link to your submission materials and we will add the link to our website.

After the submission deadline, R-Ladies Ottawa will host a virtual event where participants can showcase their work. This is a great way to learn from one another and to connect with other like-minded individuals!

Ebru Cucen -> Survival Kit for Women in IT, from a mother who has spent 15 years in IT, most of the time the only women engineer/lead in her teams. This talk is about biases, how we can enable more diverse conversations and enjoy family life.

Bio: She has a focus on team collaboration, product ideas, and enabling financial institutions to adapt to the brave new world better. She is a technical reviewer of the book "Learning DevOps" published in Nov 2019. For the last two decades, she had multiple hats such as programmer, trainer, architect, scrum master, coach, as well as wife, mum, and doing her best to have a balanced, happy life. She loves learning, pushing boundaries, and would never say no to a glass of red wine or preparing maths questions for her 7yr old son!

Amanda Cavallaro & Laura Morinigo -> Building your own automated conversations. You can use Dialogflow, Firebase and Google Cloud Platform for many reasons, we can create interactions to be used within your own communities, may it be a conversational action for families, companies, sports; to help workflows for both customers and businesses. Sometimes it can be a bad thing to talk to an automated conversation if it is not well-designed.

Ayelet Sachto -> If you can drive you can architect a system: what you should not forget when architecting a solution

In this talk, I will try to simplify a complex subject, by demonstrating how natural solution architecture can be if you use a different perspective, implementing similar logic from a driver’s daily life through architecture challenges. We will start with demonstrating such trade-offs and design principles by asking simple questions as “which car would you buy?” and "What will your answer be if you have 1000$? 10M$, Would you buy the same car? Will it affect your decision If you driving 10 mins a day? 10 hours a day? Together we will cover the key points and questions you should consider when architecting your solution.

Bio: Ayelet is a strategic cloud engineer @Google UK, focusing on infrastructure, AppDev, and SRE. Throughout her 15 years career, She developed and architect large scale applications and data flows while implementing DevOps practices and SRE methodologies. Ayelet is also an active member in the tech community, she is a mentor, lecturer, and formerly lead the "Women in Hi-Tech'' community's content and mentoring program in Israel. Challenge

The objective of this data challenge is to analyze investing in women. This is a very open-ended challenge, so be as creative as you’d like!

Some examples include:

• Analyze venture capital investment data to understand trends in funding for women-led startups.
• Analyze businesses or organizations that promote women’s empowerment.
• Analyze data on gender diversity in leadership positions.

You can use any data source, but the following are examples:

• Measuring the value of women’s contribution to the Canadian economy: New insights based on recent work
• Statistics Canada’s Gender, Diversity and Inclusion Statistics Hub
• Statistics Canada’s Average percentage of women and men in management positions tables

Join R-Ladies Ottawa for an in-person networking event on International Women's Day at Beyond the Pale! This is a great opportunity to meet other women and gender minorities from the Ottawa area who are interested in open-source. In honour of IWD, we will also be holding a month-long data challenge.
