Join our Microsoft Fabric - UK User Group for our latest webinar.

This session we are excited to announce our host Microsoft MVP Leon Gordon and co-host Microsoft MVP Pragati Jain will be introducing Microsoft MVP Thomas Martens.

Microsoft Community - https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Power-BI-UK-User-Group/gh-p/pbi_UK_usergroup LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/8909321/ MeetUp - https://www.meetup.com/microsoft-power-bi-uk/

Session Abstract -

In this session, I'll provide a comprehensive introduction to Microsoft's latest analytical superpower—Microsoft Graph.

We'll start by exploring the fundamental ingredients of graph databases: nodes (your data entities) and edges (the relationships that connect them). I'll demonstrate how to combine these elements and add various "flavors" using GQL (Graph Query Language)—the newly standardized ISO query language that's making graph operations more consistent and portable across platforms. Spoiler alert: it's way more intuitive than wrestling with complex SQL joins that look like they were designed by someone who really, really loved parentheses.

To bring everything together, I'll showcase hands-on demos that illuminate the practical differences between these database approaches and demonstrate the impressive analytical capabilities of Microsoft Fabric Graph. You'll see real-world scenarios where graph analytics reveals insights that would be practically impossible (or at least incredibly painful) to extract from traditional tabular data.

This session is designed for both developers and architects, offering a dual perspective that balances the technical nitty-gritty with strategic architectural considerations. You'll gain practical insights into working with GQL tooling while also understanding the business challenges Microsoft Fabric Graph will solve.

Whether you're considering adding graph capabilities to your data platform or just curious about what all the graph hype is about, this session will equip you with the knowledge to make informed decisions and maybe even impress your colleagues at the next team meeting.

Microsoft Fabric and Azure DevOps - The story so far as we end 2024

Join our Microsoft Fabric - UK User Group for our latest webinar.

This session we are excited to announce our host Microsoft MVP Leon Gordon and co-host Microsoft MVP Pragati Jain will be introducing Gil Raviv.

Join the Microsoft Fabric UK - User Group on -

Microsoft Community - https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Power-BI-UK-User-Group/gh-p/pbi_UK_usergroup LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/8909321/ MeetUp - https://www.meetup.com/microsoft-power-bi-uk/

Session Abstract -

Do you assess the performance of digital products in your organisation? Looking solely at financial metrics simply doesn't give the full picture. Measuring usage, engagement, and user satisfaction provides the insights needed to predict adoption, reduce attrition, and identify where improvements can make a real impact. With effective engagement analysis, you'll discover which features resonate with users and which areas would benefit from optimisation.

Join Gil Raviv in this session to learn great techniques to help you analyse digital products with Power BI and Fabric. We will use Power Query and DAX to solve common data challenges and learn a wide range of techniques: How to measure key performance indicators for user adoption, attrition, and satisfaction; How to group separate events into sessions and calculation session duration; How to assess the complexity, usability, and passivity of digital products to identify poorly performing products;

To demonstrate the techniques to measure the health of digital products, Gil picked a digital product that you all own—your Power BI reports. After all, if you think about it seriously, every Power BI report that you deliver in your organisation is your digital product. We will use Power BI reports as an example of a digital product since they are familiar to you. Throughout the demonstrations, Gil will share the techniques he used to build BI Pixie, a new Azure Marketplace product that measures the engagement, adoption, and user satisfaction in Power BI reports. But if you are not interested in measuring the engagement in your Power BI reports, do not worry—the techniques will be relevant for any digital product.

Biography

Gil Raviv is the author of the Microsoft Press book, “Collect, Combine and Transform Data using Power Query”, and the founder of DataChant Consulting. For his contributions to the BI community and impact working with global enterprises, Gil was recognised as a Microsoft MVP for five consecutive years (2017–2021) and received the Microsoft Fast Track Solution Architect recognition (2020, 2021). Gil has led numerous consulting engagements, pre-sales activities, and go-to-market initiatives as a global BI practice lead at Avanade/Accenture (2017–2021) and AWS (2022–2023), and led delivery excellence and sales enablement for hundreds of global Microsoft Power BI and Amazon QuickSight professionals.

As a product manager, Gil spent a significant part of his career designing digital products and measuring their performance (e.g., Microsoft Excel and Amazon QuickSight, amongst others). BI Pixie, DataChant's latest product, combines Gil's product management and business intelligence experiences to empower the Power BI community to gain better insights into their delivery.

Description:

In this session, we’ll explore the powerful concept of Git branching and how it can elevate your development processes within Microsoft Fabric and Power BI projects.

We'll start by introducing the fundamentals of Git branching, highlighting how it enhances collaboration, improves quality control, and enables versioning in professional development environments. You’ll learn why branches are essential for any development team aiming to streamline workflows and maintain project stability.

Next, we’ll take a closer look at Fabric’s branching capabilities, specifically the "branch-out" feature. We’ll dive into its strengths, where it simplifies your workflow, and where additional steps or workarounds may be necessary to achieve optimal results. By understanding these nuances, you’ll be better equipped to make the most of Fabric’s tooling in your own projects.

Finally, we’ll explore branching in the context of various industry-standard Git workflows. Whether you’re familiar with Git Flow, GitHub Flow, or other branching strategies, you’ll see how these practices apply to Fabric and Power BI projects. We'll tie it all together with practical examples, helping you understand how different development flows function in real-world scenarios, and how to choose the right strategy for your team’s needs.

By the end of this talk, you’ll have a clear understanding of how Git branches can transform your development processes in Fabric and Power BI, along with actionable insights on how to implement them in your day-to-day workflows.

Session Abstract -

From using SVGs or DENEB to create unique visuals, to page level security with RLS - workarounds are often necessary to overcome limitations and achieve desired functionalities in Power BI. However, these workarounds come with their own set of costs and considerations. This session discusses the key factors to help developers evaluate workarounds in Power BI, ensuring that the benefits outweigh the potential drawbacks.

To do this, we will explore some real-life workarounds in Power BI such as code-based Custom Visuals (DENEB, SVGs, HTML, Python), Page level security, and storing a custom PowerQuery library in Github. We will also dive into the trade-offs involved, including maintainability, impact on development, and technical debt.

This session is aimed at the intermediate Power BI Developer, to help them answer the question - Should I use this workaround? Attendees are encouraged to have some experience with custom visuals and PowerQuery with the Advanced Editor.

Session Abstract -

Your data is only valuable if you can act on it. But acting on data often requires manual monitoring of reports and dashboards, which can be time-consuming. That's why we have created Data Activator. Data Activator is an experience in Microsoft Fabric that lets you create alerts and trigger Power Automate flows from your data, without writing code. In this session I will demo Data Activator so that you can see it in action.
