Data assets at organizations tend to stick around for a while--many of the databases we work with are old enough to vote. These databases tend to be full of code and patterns which made sense in SQL Server 2005 but are not the best approach today. In this session, we will walk through what has changed in the T-SQL landscape over the past several versions of SQL Server, providing practical tips on how to improve an existing code base without installing new SQL Server components. Just because that database is old doesn't mean it has to look that way.

PolyBase is Microsoft's primary data virtualization technology, allowing you to integrate SQL Server with a variety of external systems such as Oracle, MongoDB, Cosmos DB, Teradata, Apache Spark, and even other SQL Server instances. In this talk, we will walk through the mechanics of PolyBase, showing how we can write T-SQL queries to access data from heterogeneous sources. We will see how data virtualization in SQL Server has evolved over the years and the new capabilities you will find in SQL Server 2022. Finally, we will look at several interesting use cases for data virtualization in the modern data environment.

APPLY Yourself

Microsoft introduced the APPLY operator in SQL Server 2005. This under-used, non-standard operator can help us solve a number of common (and not-so-common) problems with elegant code which performs well. We will look several problem spaces in which the APPLY operator shines, such as joining to table-valued functions, getting the top N child records for each parent record, string splitting, and word matching. With the use of these examples, we will gain a deeper understanding of when to use the APPLY operator.

Kevin Feasel is a Microsoft Data Platform MVP and CTO at FareGame Inc, where he specializes in data analytics with T-SQL and R, forcing Spark clusters to do his bidding, fighting with Kafka, and pulling rabbits out of hats on demand.
