London R | Meetup | Jan 2026

Join fellow Airflow enthusiasts and leaders at Salisbury House for an evening of engaging talks, great food and drinks, and exclusive swag!

We'll start you off with a deep dive into the Airflow 2026 survey results, and finish off with a community member presentation on the Apache TinkerPop provider.

PRESENTATIONS

Talk #1: The State of Apache Airflow® 2026

Apache Airflow® continues to thrive as the world’s leading open-source data orchestration platform, with 30M downloads per month and over 3k contributors. 2025 marked a major milestone with the release of Airflow 3, which introduced DAG versioning, enhanced security and task isolation, assets, and more. These changes have reshaped how data teams build, operate, and govern their pipelines.

In this session, our speaker will share insights from the State of Airflow 2026 report, including:

  • Latest trends in how teams are using Airflow today
  • What’s next for the project and ecosystem
  • A discussion of emerging best practices and evolving use cases

Join us to hear directly from a leader in the community and discover how to get the most out of Airflow in the year ahead.

Talk #2: Building the Apache TinkerPop Provider for Airflow

Graph databases are powering everything from recommendation engines to fraud detection, but integrating graph operations into modern data pipelines has often required custom code and workarounds. Earlier this year, Ahmad built a new Apache TinkerPop provider for Airflow, making it easier than ever to orchestrate Gremlin queries, manage graph workloads, and connect Airflow to TinkerPop-enabled systems. In this session, you’ll learn:

  • What the TinkerPop provider does and why it matters for graph-based workloads
  • How to run Gremlin queries and manage graph jobs directly within Airflow
  • Real examples from the development process, including design decisions and lessons learned
  • How this provider opens the door for new use cases in graph analytics and data engineering

Join us to explore how Airflow and TinkerPop can work together to streamline graph workflows and unlock new patterns in modern data pipelines.

AGENDA

  • 5:30-6 PM: Arrivals, networking, food & drinks
  • 6-7PM: Presentations
  • 7-8PM: Networking
The State of Airflow 2026: London Airflow Meetup!

Join us at our first event of the year at The Information Lab on the historic Watling Street in the City of London 🙌 We will be kicking off 2026 by delving into the topic of real-time data with our speakers - Sam, Nicoleta & Anton. We are running this event in collaboration with Confluent.

6pm: Doors Open

6:30pm: Talks Start

🗣️The Speakers🗣️

Load-In to Lights-Out: Data Engineering the World's Biggest Tours and Live Events Sam Malcolm, Head of Architecture & Engineering at Centrus (Sam's Linkedin) Sam’s session dives into lessons from large-scale live event data systems—handling over 10 billion data points per second for global tours like Beyoncé, Coldplay, and Glastonbury. He connects the extreme demands of real-time analytics and high-performance networking to modern cloud data practices, showing how the same principles of speed, resilience, and precision apply when designing reliable, scalable data platforms today.

Should I Stream or Should I Join: From Regular to Delta Joins in Apache Flink Nicoleta Lazar, Senior Data Engineer at Fresha & Anton Borisov, Principal Engineer at Fresha (Niloceta's LinkedIn , Anton's LinkedIn) Joins in the streaming world are where the fun stops and the tradeoffs start. State that grows forever, latency that spikes unpredictably, watermarks that never quite behave, every Flink developer has war stories about this. In this session, Anton Borisov and Nicoleta Lazar break down the join landscape in Apache Flink:

→ Regular joins and the state explosion problem → Interval joins: when they work, when they don't → Temporal joins and the versioned table dance → Lookup joins: the escape hatch and its hidden costs → Delta joins: the new kid and how Fluss enables them, and why it matters

Talks finish by 8pm and there will be a break between the talks. Afterwards, we may head to a pub to continue chatting.

You can sign up by subscribing to this event

🚨IMPORTANT: Please bring a valid form of ID.

We’re excited to be back at Big Data LDN this year—huge thanks to the organisers for hosting Databricks London once more!

Join us for an evening of insights, networking, and community with the Databricks Team and Advancing Analytics!

🎤 Agenda:

6:00 PM – 6:10 PM | Kickoff & Warm Welcome

Grab a drink, say hi, and get the lowdown on what’s coming up. We’ll set the scene for an evening of learning and laughs.

6:10 PM – 6:50 PM | The Metadata Marathon: How three projects are racing forward – Holly Smith (Staff Developer Advocate, Databricks)

With the enormous amount of discussion about open storage formats between nerds and even not-nerds, it can be hard to keep track of who’s doing what and how this actually makes any impact on day to day data projects.

Holly will take a closer look at the three big projects in this space; Delta, Hudi and Iceberg. They’re all trying to solve for similar data problems and have tackled the various challenges in different ways. Her talk will start with the very basics of how we got here, what the history is before diving deep into the underlying tech, their roadmaps, and their impacts on the data landscape as a whole.

6:50 PM – 7:10 PM | What’s New in Databricks & Databricks AI – Simon Whiteley & Gavi Regunath

Hot off the press! Simon and Gavi will walk you through the latest and greatest from Databricks, including shiny new AI features and platform updates you’ll want to try ASAP.

7:10 PM onwards | Q&A Panel + Networking

Your chance to ask the experts anything—then stick around for drinks, snacks, and some good old-fashioned data geekery.

FULL TITLE: The Cost of Misspecifying Price Impact

ABSTRACT

Portfolio managers’ orders trade off return and trading cost predictions. Return predictions rely on alpha models, whereas price impact models quantify trading costs. This paper studies what happens when trades are based on an incorrect price impact model, so that the portfolio either over- or under-trades its alpha signal. We derive tractable formulas for these misspecification costs and illustrate them on proprietary trading data. The misspecification costs are naturally asymmetric: underestimating impact concavity or impact decay shrinks profits, but overestimating concavity or impact decay can even turn profits into losses. (Based on joint work with Jean-Philippe Bouchaud, Natascha Hey, Iacopo Matromatteo and Kevin Webster)

BIOGRAPHY

Johannes Muhle-Karbe joined the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London in January 2019 as Chair in Mathematical Finance and Director of the CFM-Imperial Institute of Quantitative Finance. Before this appointment, Johannes held faculty positions at Carnegie Mellon University, University of Michigan, and ETH Zürich.

His research primarily focuses on areas such as asset pricing, portfolio optimization, and stochastic control, particularly in connection with market microstructure and the impact of transaction costs.

Prof. Muhle-Karbe has made significant contributions to the understanding of mathematical models in finance, especially in how investors should optimally trade in the presence of frictions such as transaction costs. His work spans both theoretical development and practical applications, contributing to the broader fields of quantitative finance and financial mathematics. His research and teaching influence students and professionals alike, particularly those involved in the mathematical modeling of financial markets.
