The Lineup for the evening

Talk 1: Specializing Small Language Models With Less Data Abstract: I will present a practical, end-to-end solution for training SLMs using synthetic data, covering key aspects from data curation through training to model evaluation. You will leave with concrete strategies for building efficient, domain-specific language models for production environments. Most AI teams are exploring the possibilities of LLMs rather than being focused on margins, but soon, efficiency will become important. Small, specialized language models (SLMs) offer a promising alternative, but training them requires extensive manually-labeled datasets - a significant engineering bottleneck. In this talk, I will discuss how large language models can be used to help generate and curate the data needed for SLM training. Using extractive question answering as a case study, We'll examine how this approach can dramatically reduce data collection time while maintaining model performance.

Speaker: Jacek Golebiowski Bio: Jacek is the CTO of distil labs, building specialised AI agents that can be deployed on-device/on-prem with minimal data. Before that, he was a machine learning team lead at AWS, focused on Automated ML and natural language processing. He holds a PhD in Machine Learning for Quantum Mechanics from Imperial College London.

--- Talk 2: Exploring fairlearn and practical strategies for assessing and mitigating harm in AI systems Abstract: As AI becomes a more significant part of our everyday lives, ensuring these systems are fair is more important than ever. In this session, we’ll discuss how to define fairness and the potential harms our algorithms can have on people and society. We'll introduce fairlearn, a community-driven, open-source project that offers practical tools for assessing and mitigating harm in AI systems. We’ll also explore how to discuss bias, different types of harm, the idea of group fairness and how they all relate to fairlearn's toolkit. To make it all concrete, we’ll walk through a real-world example of assessing fairness and share some hands-on strategies you can use to mitigate harm in your own ML projects.

Speaker: Tamara Atanasoska Bio: Tamara is a software engineer, OSS contributor and maintainer and NLP researcher.

--- Lightning talks There will be slots for 2-3 Lightning Talks (3-5 Minutes for each). Kindly let us know if you would like to present something at the start of the meetup :)

Talk 1: Beyond the Continuum: The Importance of Quantization in Deep Learning Abstract: Quantization is a process of mapping continuous values to a finite set of discrete values. It is a powerful technique that can significantly reduce the memory footprint and computational requirements of deep learning models, making them more efficient and easier to deploy on resource-constrained devices. In this talk, we will explore the different types of quantization techniques and discuss how they can be applied to deep learning models. In addition, we will cover the basics of NNCF and OpenVINO Toolkit, seeing how they collaborate to achieve outstanding performance - everything in a Jupyter Notebook, which allows you to try it at home.

Speaker: Adrian Boguszewski is an AI Software Evangelist at Intel. Adrian graduated from the Gdansk University of Technology in the field of Computer Science 7 years ago. After that, he started his career in computer vision and deep learning. As a team leader of data scientists and Android developers for the previous two years, Adrian was responsible for an application to take a professional photo (for an ID card or passport) without leaving home. He is a co-author of the LandCover.ai dataset, creator of the OpenCV Image Viewer Plugin, and a Deep Learning lecturer occasionally. His current role is to educate people about OpenVINO Toolkit. In his free time, he’s a traveler. You can also talk with him about finance, especially investments.

Talk 2: A Meat-ing of Minds Abstract: In this far wandering talk we consider the big meaty questions: What can AI learn from Neuroscience? What can Neuroscience learn from AI? Do LLMs "understand" language? What does "meaning" mean? Am I just a robot made of meat? These huge questions and more... will remain completely unanswered, but we will have a good time talking about them! AI, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Semantics. What more could you want?

Speaker: Andy Kitchen is the co-founder of Cortical Labs, a synthetic intelligence company growing live biological neurons inside computer chips and teaching them inside a matrix world. He is a 10+ year start-up veteran and turbo nerd. Beer, bad philosophy and type theory will be the death of him.

Better ETL with Managed Airflow in ADF by Niall Langley Building complex data workflows using Azure Data Factory can get a little clunky - as you orchestration needs get more complex you hit limitations like not being able to nest loops or conditionals, running simple Python, bash or PowerShell scripts is difficult, and costs can grow quickly as you are charged per task execution. Recently another option become available, Managed Airflow in ADF. Apace Airflow is a code-centric open-source platform for developing, scheduling and monitoring batch-based data workflows, built using the python language Data Engineers know and love. But until Managed Airflow, getting it working in Azure was a complex task for customers more used to PaaS services such as ADF, Databricks and Fabric. It is also an important ETL orchestrator on AWS and GCP, so cross cloud compatibility becomes simpler to achieve. In this session we’ll look at what Airflow is, how it’s different from ADF, and what advantages Managed Airflow in ADF gives us. We talk about the idea of a DAG for building the workflow, and then work through some demos to show just how easy it is to use Python to write an Airflow DAG’s and import them into the Managed Airflow Environment as pipelines. We then dive into the excellent monitoring UI and find out just how easy is it to trigger a pipeline, view it to see the dependencies between tasks, and monitor runs. By the end of the session attendees will have a good understanding of what Airflow is, when to use it, and how it fits into the Azure Data Platform.

‌ 🕖 LOGISTICS Talks kick off at 18:30 sharp; then networking in Left Handed Giant from 20:40.
