Community Restart
2024-01-30 · 16:00
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nothing has happened here for a long time, we are very sorry about that. After much consideration, we have decided to reactivate this group, but with a new mindset. We want to become the new Microsoft user group in Berlin. The new one? Yes, the new one. New, because we will broaden the topics, because we will mainly organize events locally and because we will now focus on German. Don't worry, of course there will also be international speakers, just not mainly. One reason for the long break was the lack of premises. Now we finally seem to have found a permanent place at itacs GmbH. Here we want to meet every last Tuesday of the month and talk about Microsoft technologies. Afterwards, we traditionally go to a local pub to round off the day. The start of this new journey is on 30.01.2024. No content has been decided for this day yet, but as soon as this has been clarified, we will let you know again. Or maybe someone of you is interested in giving a talk, we are now completely open in the choice of topics... as long as it comes from the Microsoft universe ;) The event begins at 17:00 with admission. We would like to start the presentation at 17:30.Oh, one more very important thing. In the past we have had such a high no-show rate that we sometimes had to throw away a lot of the catering. To prevent this, we ask that you only register if you really want to be there. Best regards Ben and Janek |

Ceph Berlin Indepence Day - July 4th 2023 - ReStart!
2023-07-04 · 16:30
Ceph Berlin Indepence Day - July 4th 2023 - ReStart! Hi Ceph Berlin Meetup Cephalopods ! ReStarting into a new age of the group, let's get in touch and meet again - in Berlin ! As always, it's about exchanging ideas about Ceph, what Ceph is, the latest developments in the community, and what you do or plan to do with Ceph. Let me know or let's discuss it in the `discussions`. If you are not comfortable to come in person we can have a hybrid event, too. However, don't be shy - we all learn although some of us may be more experienced and those will be the source of your learning and experience. Themes proposed this round (for now):
A little bit of housekeeping upfront:
Any changes required ? Please suggest - even the time is open for discussion. Somebody has room for us and wants to offer a location to meet - let us know, the `discussions` is the place to do this. Otherwise, if nobody else suggests a location, we'll meet at the Red Hat office in Berlin. Anything we should do differently ? Is Jitsi not working for you or should we pick a better time ? Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome. Since the location for in-person might be not shown, here it is: Red Hat, ℅ Design Offices, Leipziger Pl. 16, 10117 Berlin We'll meet in front of the main entry facing the Leipziger Platz between 18:15-18:30, so please be on time or give me a call on +49-160-92654111 in case you're late. Important: Really, give me a call if you are late ! You cannot enter the building or come to the office on your own. Link for proposed Jitsi Meeting: https://meet.jit.si/CephMeetupBerlinJuly4th2023 Please, RSVP before Monday, July 2nd 2023, so that we can learn how many people will join. See you soon ! Matthias. |

How To Make Apache Spark on Kubernetes Run Reliably on Spot Instances
2022-07-19 · 17:02
Since the general availability of Apache Spark’s native support for running on Kubernetes with Spark 3.1 in March 2021, the Spark community is increasingly choosing to run on k8s to benefit of containerization, efficient resource-sharing, and the tools from the cloud-native ecosystem. Data teams are faced with complexities in this transition, including how to leverage spot VMs. These instances enable up to 90% cost savings but are not guaranteed to be available and face the risk of termination. This session will cover concrete guidelines on how to make Spark run reliably on spot instances, with code examples from real-world use cases. Main topics: • Using spot nodes for Spark executors • Mixing instance types & sizes to reduce risk of spot interruptions - cluster autoscaling • Spark 3.0: Graceful Decommissioning - preserve shuffle files on executor shutdown • Spark 3.1: PVC reuse on executor restart - disaggregate compute & shuffle storage • What to look for in future Spark releases Connect with us: Website: https://databricks.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/databricksinc Twitter: https://twitter.com/databricks LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/data...
