Building and working with Small Language Models

This session focuses on practical techniques for using small open-source language models (SLMs) in enterprise settings. We'll explore modern workflows for adapting SLMs with domain-specific pre-training, instruction fine-tuning, and alignment. Along the way, we will introduce and demonstrate open-source tools such as DistillKit, Spectrum, and MergeKit, which implement advanced techniques crucial for achieving task-specific accuracy while optimizing computational costs. We'll also discuss some of the models and solutions built by Arcee AI. Join us to learn how small, efficient, and adaptable models can transform your AI applications.

With over 30 years of tech experience, including more than a decade in cloud computing and machine learning, Julien is committed to daily learning and is passionate about sharing his expertise through code demos, blogs, and YouTube videos. Before joining Arcee.ai, he was Chief Evangelist at Hugging Face and Global AI Evangelist at Amazon Web Services. He also served as a CTO at prominent startups.

Accelerating sustainable inference with Pruna AI

This talk explores how to make AI faster and more sustainable. We’ll look at the high costs and carbon impact of fine-tuning and self deploying models, and show how optimization techniques available in the Pruna library can reduce size and latency with little to no quality loss.

About the Speaker

Gabriel Tregoat is the software lead at Pruna.ai, a specialist company on model inference optimisation with an open source library called “pruna”. He previously was a leader for AI in production at Ekimetrics, and started his career as a data scientist and ml-engineer at Shell Energy. He’s passionate about tech, code and new technologies.

Visual Agents: What it takes to build an agent that can navigate GUIs like humans

We’ll examine conceptual frameworks, potential applications, and future directions of technologies that can “see” and “act” with increasing independence. The discussion will touch on both current limitations and promising horizons in this evolving field.

About the Speaker

Harpreet Sahota is a hacker-in-residence and machine learning engineer with a passion for deep learning and generative AI. He’s got a deep interest in RAG, Agents, and Multimodal AI.

What I Learned About Systematic AI Improvement

Most AI teams go through the same story: fast early progress, and then suddenly things slow down. The AI isn’t broken, but new changes don’t seem to help, and it’s not even clear how to tell if things are getting better. I’ve faced this plateau myself—both in my own work and while helping other teams. In this talk, I’ll share what I’ve learned about getting unstuck: how to build genuine confidence in your AI, what “trust” really means in practice, and practical steps to move from “it kind of works” to “this is actually improving.” My goal is to give you real-world ideas you can use when you hit the same wall.

About the Speaker

Louis Dupont is an AI engineer with over eight years of experience developing AI solutions across multiple industries. Currently, he work directly with companies to build and deploy AI internally, and as a consultant specializing in helping teams overcome common roadblocks in AI development.

July 16 - Paris AI, ML and Computer Vision Meetup
Simon Landry – guest @ Thomson Reuters , Brian T. O’Neill – host , Paz Perez – guest @ Google , Greg Nudelman – guest @ Sumo Logic

I’m doing things a bit differently for this episode of Experiencing Data. For the first time on the show, I’m hosting a panel discussion. I’m joined by Thomson Reuters’s Simon Landry, Sumo Logic’s Greg Nudelman, and Google’s Paz Perez to chat about how we design user experiences that improve people’s lives and create business impact when we expose LLM capabilities to our users.

With the rise of AI, there are a lot of opportunities for innovation, but there are also many challenges—and frankly, my feeling is that a lot of these capabilities right now are making things worse for users, not better. We’re looking at a range of topics such as the pros and cons of AI-first thinking, collaboration between UX designers and ML engineers, and the necessity of diversifying design teams when integrating AI and LLMs into b2b products.

Highlights/ Skip to

Thoughts on how the current state of LLMs implementations and its impact on user experience (1:51)  The problems that can come with the "AI-first" design philosophy (7:58)  Should a company's design resources be spent on go toward AI development? (17:20) How designers can navigate "fuzzy experiences” (21:28) Why you need to narrow and clearly define the problems you’re trying to solve when building LLMs products (27:35) Why diversity matters in your design and research teams when building LLMs (31:56)  Where you can find more from Paz, Greg, and Simon (40:43)

Quotes from Today’s Episode

“ [AI] will connect the dots. It will argue pro, it will argue against, it will create evidence supporting and refuting, so it’s really up to us to kind of drive this. If we understand the capabilities, then it is an almost limitless field of possibility. And these things are taught, and it’s a fundamentally different approach to how we build user interfaces. They’re no longer completely deterministic. They’re also extremely personalized to the point where it’s ridiculous.” - Greg Nudelman (12:47) “ To put an LLM into a product means that there’s a non-zero chance your user is going to have a [negative] experience and no longer be your customer. That is a giant reputational risk, and there’s also a financial cost associated with running these models. I think we need to take more of a service design lens when it comes to [designing our products with AI] and ask what is the thing somebody wants to do… not on my website, but in their lives? What brings them to my [product]? How can I imagine a different world that leverages these capabilities to help them do their job? Because what [designers] are competing against is [a customer workflow] that probably worked well enough.” - Simon Landry (15:41) “ When we go general availability (GA) with a product, that traditionally means [designers] have done all the research, got everything perfect, and it’s all great, right? Today, GA is a starting gun. We don’t know [if the product is working] unless we [seek out user feedback]. A massive research method is needed. [We need qualitative research] like sitting down with the customer and watching them use the product to really understand what is happening[…] but you also need to collect data. What are they typing in? What are they getting back? Is somebody who’s typing in this type of question always having a short interaction? Let’s dig into it with rapid, iterative testing and evaluation, so that we can update our model and then move forward. Launching a product these days means the starting guns have been fired. Put the research to work to figure out the next step.” - (23:29) Greg Nudelman “ I think that having diversity on your design team (i.e. gender, level of experience, etc.) is critical. We’ve already seen some terrible outcomes. Multiple examples where an LLM is crafting horrendous emails, introductions, and so on. This is exactly why UXers need to get involved [with building LLMs]. This is why diversity in UX and on your tech team that deals with AI is so valuable. Number one piece of advice: get some researchers. Number two: make sure your team is diverse.” - Greg Nudelman (32:39) “ It’s extremely important to have UX talks with researchers, content designers, and data teams. It’s important to understand what a user is trying to do, the context [of their decisions], and the intention. [Designers] need to help [the data team] understand the types of data and prompts being used to train models. Those things are better when they’re written and thought of by [designers] who understand where the user is coming from. [Design teams working with data teams] are getting much better results than the [teams] that are working in a vacuum.” - Paz Perez (35:19)

Firebase Builders - Workshop on Extensions
Simon Whiteley – Advancing Analytics @ Advancing Analytics , Jordan Donmoyer

Accurate, reliable, and timely data is critical for CPG companies to stay ahead in highly competitive retailer relationships, and for a company like the Hershey Company, the commercial relationship with Walmart is one of the most important. The team at Hershey found themselves with a looming deadline for their legacy analytics services and targeted a migration to the brand new Walmart Luminate API. Working in partnership with Advancing Analytics, the Hershey Company leveraged a metadata-driven Lakehouse Architecture to rapidly onboard the new Luminate API, helping the category management teams to overhaul how they measure, predict, and plan their business operations.

In this session, we will discuss the impact Luminate has had on Hershey's business covering key areas such as sales, supply chain, and retail field execution, and the technical building blocks that can be used to rapidly provision business users with the data they need, when they need it. We will discuss how key technologies enable this rapid approach, with Databricks Autoloader ingesting and shaping our data, Delta Streaming processing the data through the lakehouse and Databricks SQL providing a responsive serving layer. The session will include commentary as well as cover the technical journey.

Denny Lee – PM Director, Developer Relations @ Databricks , Simon Whiteley – Advancing Analytics @ Advancing Analytics

Simon and Denny have been discussing and debating all things Delta, Lakehouse and Apache Spark™ on their regular webshow. Whether you want advice on lake structures, want to hear their opinions on the latest trends and hype in the data world, or you simply have a tech implementation question to throw at two seasoned experts, these two will have something to say on the matter. In their previous shows, Simon and Denny focused on building out a sample lakehouse architecture, refactoring and tinkering as new features came out, but now we're throwing the doors open for any and every question you might have.

So if you've had a persistent question and think these two can help, this is the session for you. There will be a question submission form shared prior to the event, so the team will be prepped with a whole bunch of topics to talk through. Simon and Denny want to hear your questions, which they can field drawing from a wealth of industry experience, wide ranging community engagement and their differing perspectives as external consultant and internal Databricks respectively. There's also a chance they'll get distracted and go way off track talking about coffee, sci-fi, nerdery or the English weather. It happens.

HighlightsBeatport’s Top 100 chart keeps highlighting the latest music in the club world, and today, we’re doing aSpecial artist deep-dive into a Norwegian producer who found streaming success in a far-off land called...SeattleMissionGood morning, it’s Jason here at Chartmetric with your 3-minute Data Dump where we upload charts, artists and playlists into your brain so you can stay up on the latest in the music data world.DateThis is your Data Dump for Friday March 29th 2019.ChartsBeatport.com is the go-to electronic music marketplace for professional DJs around the world so they can make people dance. With over 60K suppliers and labels, 450K customers and 35M unique annual visitors, Beatport is a B2B business at its core: providing high quality downloads so DJs can fill their sonic arsenal. It also provides a weekly Top 100 chart that essentially becomes an up-to-date soundtrack to what clubbers are getting down to globally. For the week ending March 22nd, “Inside My Head” by UK-based duo Audiojack took the #1 most purchased download for the second week in a row spending 10 days on the chart. Spinnin’ Records had the most tracks with 4, including a David Guetta and Tom Staar track, while legendary London-based Ministry of Sound Recordings had 2.While you may see some familiar Top 40 names such as Childish Gambino in the #3 spot or Calvin Harris & Rag’n’Bone Man at #5, the Beatport Top 100 is really an anti-pop serum: nearly half the chart’s tracks have 4-minute-plus run times, zero tracks directly releasing into the chart and nearly ⅔ of the list spending less than a week on the chart themselves...meaning lots of track turnover, and lots of opportunities for emerging artists with great dance music.Artist Highlight in the NewsHere’s an interesting case of streaming’s global nature at its finest: Norway-based house producer Simon Field found unexpected attention in Seattle upon the release of his track “Shake the Tree” on January 25th.Field, who sports a 53 Spotify Popularity Index score and 385K monthly listeners despite having only 10K followers, is an example of an emerging artist that organically over-indexes their stream count in a particular city for an unknown reason.Upon “Shake the Tree”’s release, it found a snug spot in the #62 position of the 90-track New Music Friday playlist for that week, which then seemed to feed playlist adds within 24 hours on no less than 20 mid-tier playlists ranging from 10 to 80K followers. While Sony-owned playlist curator Filtr UK’s “Dance All Night” was among these lists, Field had no major label support in the release, and yet from Feb 21st to March 20th saw a 455% increase in monthly listeners in Seattle, peaking at 7.4K.Virtually mirroring Field’s rise in Seattle however, a certain mid-tier playlist called “CloudKid” by the curator of the same name added “Shake the Tree” with 98K followers…..adding the track on Feb 16th, and removing it on March 21st, after which day Field saw an immediate decrease in Spotify listener growth in Seattle after a month long increase.Coincidence? Possibly, except for the fact that CloudKid is an influential electronic music label & curator who came up on YouTube, with a channel influencing 2.9M subscribers with over 906M total views. While the connection between Seattle and CloudKid’s audience is still unclear, the data suggests at the minimum an appreciation of mid-tier, five-digit follower count playlists helping propagate new music. And at its best, Field may have a unique case of cross-platform success where a veteran YouTube curator’s side hustle (or here, a Spotify playlist) gave an unknowing artist streaming success thousands of miles away.Playlist Round-Up (none)OutroThat’s it for your Daily Data Dump for Friday March 29th 2019.
