OpenUK London #20: Open AI 2025-01-15 · 18:30

Due to an ongoing maintenance issue in our regular venue, we are moving just two stops south to Borough. Please double-check the location in the event details before you travel!

Wednesday 15th January we're back with our 20th OpenUK London community meetup! We've had the hype, now let's get real with how AI is working for us, of course the open source kind! (Open AI in the title is not to be confused with OpenAI because that is not open.)

6:30 pm: Arrive on time, grab a bev, a slice and a chat. Scope out our swag table (bring pieces to contribute or trade!) Add to our whiteboarding brainstorm

6:45 pm: Welcome, reminder of code of conduct, and discussion of whiteboard 7:00 pm: State of AI Openness 2024 explained with Amanda Brock, OpenUK CEO 7:20pm: Speech to Speech translation with a cascade of open source models, presented by AI developer Nikita Krasnytskyi 7:40 pm: Unum Cloud, advanced AI computing company for scaling intelligence, presented by founder Ash Vardanian 8:00 pm: Zeval: Open Source Testing Library for LLMs, presented by Matt Carey 8:45 pm: Clean up and leave. Bring tupperware so we don't waste pizza! We will give one ticket away to someone online and to someone in person to this year's State of Open Con!

Thank you to our sponsors Avanade for providing this great space and yummy pizza!

The link for the online version of this event will be added about a week before, so please check back.

By attending this or any OpenUK event, you are adhering to our Code of Respect and OpenUK's Competition Policy. Please read ahead.

OpenUK London #20: Open AI

Tuesday 15th October is our 18th OpenUK London community meetup. This month we are discussing the dichotomy of can open source even be a business? Following last month's Economics of Open Source report, we will dive into and discuss the results and talk about how you can get the most out of your most often free open source contributions or how could it be a business?

We are kicking off a bit later this month but you can check in downstairs from 645. 7:00pm: Arrive, grab a bev, a slice and a chat. Scope out our swag table (bring pieces to contribute or trade!) 7:15 pm: Panel including Lee Wright, Liam Crilly, Amanda Brock, Matt Barker and Paula Kennedy, moderated by Jennifer Riggins Followed by an interactive fishbowl: five seats at the front of the room, with one always empty. If a fifth sits down, one of the others gets up. A continuous discussion that flows around a topic. Anyone is welcome to jump right into the "bowl" at any time with questions, topics or responses. 8:30-8:45 pm: Cleanup and see-ya-next-time.

Please remember to bring your I.D. if you are attending in person, as it is required to access the venue. Note the venue does not permit e-scooters or bicycles within the building.

Thank you to our sponsors Avanade for providing this great space and yummy pizza! By attending this or any OpenUK event, you are adhering to our Code of Respect and OpenUK's Competition Policy. Please read ahead.

Topic: “Overcoming External Data Hurdles and Enriching Predictive Forecasts at Scale”

Speaker#1: Baylen Springer, CEO of Ready Signal Baylen has over 20 years of experience in marketing, analytics, and product development. Prior, Baylen was the Chief Product Officer at Leavened, leading product development for a platform delivering Marketing Mix Modeling and Television optimization solutions. Additionally, he was an SVP of Media Analytics for Ford Motor Company. Baylen received his B.S. in computer science from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

Speaker#2: Matt Schaefer, Chief Growth Officer of Ready Signal Matt is an accomplished SaaS technology executive with a seasoned background in Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at hyper-growth technology companies. During his evolving roles, he has built transformative value in the mid-market and Fortune 1000 space, operationalizing data into industry vertical solutions and helped scale organizations from start-up to successful IPO. At Ready Signal, he is responsible for leading the strategic growth efforts for the disruptive technology company that streamlines the integration of data from external factors to drive real-time, contextual decisions and forecasting solutions for any organization.

Abstract: A well-structured plan for using external or “alternative” data in your data science and analytics practice can be a competitive advantage. The problem is the external data ecosystem is fragmented and expanding rapidly. Thousands of data outlets that are not normalized or easy to procure makes the data wrangling task even more challenging, but not insurmountable.

Join this interactive session with experts from Ready Signal as they explore strategies to mature your data integration and decision intelligence processes. Session takeaways include: - Evolving your data strategy: The Importance of Alternative Data - Overcoming challenges in building quality alternative data sources into analytics workflows and predictive models. - Real-world use cases in scaling external data sources to optimize cost and maximize business value

Overcoming External Data Hurdles and Enriching Predictive Forecasts at Scale
Matt Housley – guest , Joe Reis – founder @ Ternary Data , Tobias Macey – host

Summary Data engineering is a difficult job, requiring a large number of skills that often don’t overlap. Any effort to understand how to start a career in the role has required stitching together information from a multitude of resources that might not all agree with each other. In order to provide a single reference for anyone tasked with data engineering responsibilities Joe Reis and Matt Housley took it upon themselves to write the book "Fundamentals of Data Engineering". In this episode they share their experiences researching and distilling the lessons that will be useful to data engineers now and into the future, without being tied to any specific technologies that may fade from fashion.

2016 is almost in the books! In just over a week, we'll be ringing in the new year, and we have it on Very Good Authority that 2017 will be the Year of Mobile. But, this episode is as much about looking back as it is about looking forward -- looking back on how our industry has evolved, what product launches piqued our interest the most, and what Snoop Dogg-related stunt marketing occurred during the year. We even do a little navel gazing about the podcast itself: our favorite topics and guests (although we love ALL the topics and guests!), and a bit of news about what will be happening with the podcast in 2017. So kick back, bust open a few roasted chestnuts, spike your eggnog generously, and give it a listen! Technologies, services, and random items mentioned in this episode include: more past episodes than are worth linking to, RSiteCatalyst, Hidden Brain podcast: Can Social Science Help You Quit Smoking for Good?, SUPERWEEK, Matt Gershoff, Caleb Whitmore, Adobe Summit, eMetrics, MeasureCamp, Un-Summit, Digital Analytics Hub, Gary Angel / Digital Mortar, Paco Underhill / Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, Jan Exner, Justin Cutroni, Kevin Hillstrom, Measure Slack, Lee Isensee, Tableau, Domo, the Domo stunt at the Tableau Conference, John Scalzi, Joe Haldeman, and Philip K. Dick.
