Attend any conference for any topic and you will hear people saying after that the best and most informative discussions happened in the bar after the show. Read any business magazine and you will find an article saying something along the lines of "Business Analytics is the hottest job category out there, and there is a significant lack of people, process and best practice." In this case the conference was eMetrics, the bar was….multiple, and the attendees were Michael Helbling, Tim Wilson and Jim Cain (Co-Host Emeritus). After a few pints and a few hours of discussion about the cutting edge of digital analytics, they realized they might have something to contribute back to the community. This podcast is one of those contributions. Each episode is a closed topic and an open forum - the goal is for listeners to enjoy listening to Michael, Tim, and Moe share their thoughts and experiences and hopefully take away something to try at work the next day. We hope you enjoy listening to the Digital Analytics Power Hour.

#280: Dashboards Must Die! Long Live Dashboards! with Andy Cotgreave

2025-09-16 Listen
podcast_episode
Andy Cotgreave (Tableau)

If you didn't have a visceral reaction to the title for this episode, then you are almost certainly not in our target audience. There are few more certain ways to get a room full of analytics folk fired up than to raise the topic of dashboards. Are they where data goes to die, or are they the essential key to unlocking self-service access to actionable insights? Are they both? Is the question irrelevant, because, if they exist to inform business users, aren't they soon going to be replaced by an AI-powered chatbot, anyway? We thought a great way to dig into the topic (and, BTW, we were right) would be to have someone on the show who has co-penned multiple books on the topic. As luck would have it, Andy Cotgreave, one of the co-authors of both 2017's The Big Book of Dashboards: Visualizing Your Data Using Real-World Business Scenarios and the imminently releasing  Dashboards That Deliver: How to Design, Develop, and Deploy Dashboards That Work agreed to join us for a lively chat on the topic! This episode's Measurement Bite from show sponsor Recast is a quick explanation of power analysis from Michael Kaminsky! #278: Is AI Good at Data Analysis? That's the Wrong Question? with Juliana Jackson

2025-08-19 Listen
podcast_episode
Juliana Jackson (Standard Deviation (podcast); Beyond the Mean Substack)

Imagine a world where business users simply fire up their analytics AI tool, ask for some insights, and get a clear and accurate response in return. That's the dream, isn't it? Is it just around the corner, or is it years away? Or is that vision embarrassingly misguided at its core? The very real humans who responded to our listener survey wanted to know where and how AI would be fitting into the analyst's toolkit, and, frankly, so do we! Maybe they (and you!) can fire up ol' Claude and ask it to analyze this episode with Juliana Jackson from the Standard Deviation podcast and Beyond the Mean Substack to find out!

#274: Real Talk About Synthetic Data with Winston Li

2025-06-24 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Winston Li (Arima)

Synthetic data: it's a fascinating topic that sounds like science fiction but is rapidly becoming a practical tool in the data landscape. From machine learning applications to safeguarding privacy, synthetic data offers a compelling alternative to real-world datasets that might be incomplete or unwieldy. With the help of Winston Li, founder of Arima, a startup specializing in synthetic data and marketing mix modelling, we explore how this artificial data is generated, where its strengths truly lie, and the potential pitfalls to watch out for! #270: AI and the Analyst. We've Got It All Figured Out.

2025-04-29 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

We finally did it: devoted an entire episode to AI. And, of course, by devoting an episode entirely to AI, we mean we just had GPT-4o generate a script for the entire show, and we just each read our parts. It's pretty impressive how the result still sounds so natural and human and spontaneous. It picked up on Tim's tendency to get hot and bothered, on Moe's proclivity for dancing right up to the edge of oversharing specific work scenarios, on Michael's knack for bringing in personality tests, on Val's patience in getting the whole discussion to get back on track, and on Julie being a real (or artificial, as the case may be?) Gem. Even though it includes the word "proclivity," this show overview was entirely generated without the assistance of AI. And yet, it's got a whopper of a hallucination: the episode wasn't scripted at all! #266: AI Projects: From Obstacles to Opportunities

2025-03-04 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Kathleen Walch

In celebration of International Women's Day, this episode of Analytics Power Hour features an all-female crew discussing the challenges and opportunities in AI projects. Moe Kiss, Julie Hoyer and Val Kroll, dive into this AI topic with guest expert, Kathleen Walch, who co-developed the CPMAI methodology and the seven patterns of AI (super helpful for your AI use cases!). Kathleen has helpful frameworks and colorful examples to illustrate the importance of setting expectations upfront with all stakeholders and clearly defining what problem you are trying to solve. Her stories are born from the painful experiences of AI projects being run like application development projects instead of the data projects that they are! Tune in to hear her advice for getting your organization to adopt a data-centric methodology for running your AI projects—you'll be happier than a camera spotting wolves in the snow! 🐺❄️🎥 For complete show notes, including links to items mentioned in this episode and a transcript of the show, visit the show page.

#265: Connected Wellness in the Age of AI with Michael Tiffany

2025-02-18 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Michael Tiffany (Fulcra Dynamics) , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

Every listener of this show is keenly aware that they are enabling the collection of various forms of hyper-specific data. Smartphones are movement and light biometric data collection machines. Many of us augment this data with a smartwatch, a smart ring, or both. A connected scale? Sure! Maybe even a continuous glucose monitor (CGM)! But… why? And what are the ramifications both for changing the ways we move through life for the better (Live healthier! Proactive wellness!) and for the worse (privacy risks and bad actors)? We had a wide-ranging discussion with Michael Tiffany, co-founder and CEO of Fulcra Dynamics, that took a run at these topics and more. Why, it's possible you'll get so excited by the content that one of your devices will record a temporary spike in your heart rate! #262: 2025 Will Be the Year of... with Barr Moses

2025-01-07 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Barr Moses (Monte Carlo)

Every year kicks off with an air of expectation. How much of our Professional Life in 2025 is going to look a lot like 2024? How much will look different, but we have a pretty good idea of what the difference will be? What will surprise us entirely—the unknown unknowns? By definition, that last one is unknowable. But we thought it would be fun to sit down with returning guest Barr Moses from Monte Carlo to see what we could nail down anyway. The result? A pretty wide-ranging discussion about data observability, data completeness vs. data connectedness, structured data vs. unstructured data, and where AI sits from an input and an output and a processing engine. And more. Moe and Tim even briefly saw eye to eye on a thing or two (although maybe that was just a hallucination). #258: Goals, KPIs, and Targets, Oh My! with Tim Wilson

2024-11-12 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

KPIs? Really? It's 2024. Can't we just ask Claude to generate those for us? We say… no. There are lots and lots of things that AI can take on or streamline, but getting meaningful, outcome-oriented alignment within a set of business partners as they plan a campaign, project, or initiative isn't one of them! Or, at least, we're pretty sure that's what our special guest for this episode would say. He's been thinking about (and ranting about) organizations' failure to take goal establishment, KPI identification, and target-setting seriously enough for years (we found a post he wrote in 2009 on the subject!). He also really helped us earn our explicit tag for this episode — scatologically and onanistically, we're afraid. But solid content nonetheless, so hopefully you can hear past that! #257: Analyst Use Cases for Generative AI

2024-10-29 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Martin Broadhurst , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

udging by the number of inbound pitches we get from PR firms, AI is absolutely going to replace most of the work of the analyst some time in the next few weeks. It's just a matter of time until some startup gets enough market traction to make that happen (business tip: niche podcasts are likely not a productive path to market dominance, no matter what Claude from Marketing says). We're skeptical. But that doesn't mean we don't think there are a lot of useful applications of generative AI for the analyst. We do! As Moe posited in this episode, one useful analogy is that thinking of using generative AI effectively is like getting a marketer effectively using MMM when they've been living in an MTA world (it's more nuanced and complicated). Our guest (NOT from a PR firm solicitation!), Martin Broadhurst, agreed: it's dicey to fully embrace generative AI without some understanding of what it's actually doing. Things got a little spicy, but no humans or AI were harmed in the making of the episode. #252: The Ever-Shifting Operating Environment of the Data Professional

2024-08-20 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Katie Bauer

Broadly writ, we're all in the business of data work in some form, right? It's almost like we're all swimming around in a big data lake, and our peers are swimming around it, too, and so are our business partners. There might be some HiPPOs and some SLOTHs splashing around in the shallow end, and the contours of the lake keep changing. Is lifeguarding…or writing SQL…or prompt engineering to get AI to write SQL…or identifying business problems a job or a skill? Does it matter? Aren't we all just trying to get to the Insights Water Slide? Katie Bauer, Head of Data at Gloss Genius and thought-provoker at Wrong But Useful, joined Michael, Julie, and Val for a much less metaphorically tortured exploration of the ever-shifting landscape in which the modern data professional operates. Or swims. Or sinks? For complete show notes, including links to items mentioned in this episode and a transcript of the show, visit the show page.

#249: Three Humans and an AI at Marketing Analytics Summit

2024-07-09 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

How good are humans at distinguishing between human-generated thoughts and AI-generated…thoughts? Could doing an extremely unscientific exploration of the question also generate some useful discussion? We decided to dig in and find out with a show recorded in front of a live audience at Marketing Analytics Summit in Phoenix! With Michael in the role of Peter Sagal, Julie, Tim, and Val went head-to-GPU by answering a range of analytics-oriented questions. Two co-hosts delivered their own answers, and one co-host delivered ChatGPT's, and the audience had to figure out which was which. Plus, a bit of audience Q&A, which included Michael channeling his inner Charlie Day! This episode also features the walk-on music that was written and performed live by Josh Silverbauer (no relation to Josh Crowhurst, the producer of this very podcast who also wrote and recorded the show's standard intro music; what is it about guys named Josh?!). #248: The Fundamentally Fascinating World of APIs with Marco Palladino

2024-06-25 Listen
podcast_episode
Julie Hoyer , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Marco Palladino (Kong, Inc.)

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are as pervasive as they are critical to the functioning of the modern world. That personalized and content-rich product page with a sub-second load time on Amazon? That's just a couple-hundred API calls working their magic. Every experience on your mobile device? Loaded with APIs. But, just because they're everywhere doesn't mean that they spring forth naturally from the keystrokes of a developer. There's a lot more going on that requires real thought and planning, and the boisterous arrival of AI to mainstream modernity has made the role of APIs and their underlying infrastructure even more critical. On this episode, Moe, Julie, and Tim dug into the fascinating world with API Maven Marco Palladino, the co-founder and CTO at Kong, Inc. #239: Non-Technical Backgrounds in the Modern Analytical World with Kirsten Lum

2024-02-20 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Kirsten Lum (storytellers.ai) , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

Is it just us, or does it seem like we're going to need to start plotting the pace of change in the world of analytics on a logarithmic scale? The evolution of the space is exciting, but it can also be a bit dizzying. And intimidating! There's so much to learn, and there are only so many hours in a day! Why did we choose that [insert totally unrelated field of study] degree program?! These questions and more—including a quick explanation of bootstrapping for Tim's benefit, which is NOT bootstrapping or bootstrap—are the subject of the latest episode of the show, with Kirsten Lum, the CTO of storytellers.ai, joining us to discuss strategies and tactics for the technically-non-technical analyst to thrive in an increasingly technical analytics world. #236: The AI Ecosystem with Matthew Lynley

2024-01-09 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Matthew Lynley , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

Aptiv, Baidu, Cerebras, Dataiku… we could keep going… and going… and going. If you know what this list is composed of (nerd), then you probably have some appreciation for how complex and fast moving the AI landscape is today. It would be impossible for a mere human to stay on top of it all, right? Wrong! Our guest on this episode, Matthew Lynley, does exactly that! In his Substack newsletter, Supervised, he covers all of the breaking news in a way that's accessible even if you aren't an MLE (that's a "machine learning engineer," but you knew that already, right?). We were thrilled he stopped by to chat with Julie, Tim and Val about some of his recent observations and discuss what the implications are for analysts and organizations trying to make sense of it all. #235: 2023 Year in Review with Josh Crowhurst

2023-12-26 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Josh Crowhurst

For those who celebrate or acknowledge it, Christmas is now in the rearview mirror. Father Time has a beard that reaches down to his toes, and he's ready to hand over the clock to an absolutely adorable little Baby Time when 2024 rolls in. That means it's time for our annual set of reflections on the analytics and data science industry. Somehow, the authoring of this description of the show was completely unaided by an LLM, although the show did include quite a bit of discussion around generative AI. It also included the announcement of a local LLM based on all of our podcast episodes to date (updated with each new episode going forward!), which you can try out here! The discussion was wide-ranging beyond AI: Google Analytics 4, Marketing Mix Modelling (MMM), the technical/engineering side of analytics versus the softer skills of creative analytical thought and engaging with stakeholders, and more, as well as a look ahead to 2024! For complete show notes, including links to items mentioned in this episode and a transcript of the show, visit the show page.

#228: What AI Can't Do with Dr. Brandeis Marshall

2023-09-19 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Dr. Brandeis Marshall , Moe Kiss

It's a lot of work to produce each episode of this show, so we were pretty sure that, by this time, we would have just turned the whole kit and kaboodle over to AI. Alas! It seems like the critical thinking and curiosity and mixing of different personalities in a discussion are safely human tasks… for now. Dr. Brandeis Marshall joined Michael, Julie, and Moe for a discussion about AI that, not surprisingly, got a little bleak at times, but it also had a fair amount of hope and handy perspectives through which to think about this space. We recommend listening to it rather than running the transcript through an LLM for a summary! #223: Explainability in AI with Dr. Janet Bastiman

2023-07-11 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Dr. Janet Bastiman (Napier) , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

To trust something, you need to understand it. And, to understand something, someone often has to explain it. When it comes to AI, explainability can be a real challenge (definitionally, a "black box" is unexplainable)! With AI getting new levels of press and prominence thanks to the explosion of generative AI platforms, the need for explainability continues to grow. But, it's just as important in more conventional situations. Dr. Janet Bastiman, the Chief Data Scientist at Napier, joined Moe and Tim to, well, explain the topic! For complete show notes, including links to items mentioned in this episode and a transcript of the show, visit the show page.

#206: AI Through a Social Justice Lens with Renée Cummings

2022-11-15 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Renée Cummings (University of Virginia)

Ethics in AI is a broad, deep, and tough subject. It's also, arguably, one of the most important subjects for analysts, data scientists, and organizations overall to deliberately and determinedly tackle as a standard part of how they do work. On this episode, Renée Cummings, Professor of Practice in Data Science and Data Activist in Residence at the University of Virginia (among many other roles), joined us for a discussion of the subject. Her knowledge of the topic is as deep as her passion for it, and both are bordering on the limitless, so it was an incredibly informative chat! #197: Did the Dungeon Master Just Pass the Turing Test? with Hilary Mason

2022-07-12 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Hilary Mason (Hidden Door)

Sure. GPT-3 and large language models in general can take a prompt and spin out in any of a million human-sounding directions. That's neat, but maybe not exactly what you'd want to turn loose as your guide through a narrative multiverse of AI-boosted creative play and community. "A what?" You say. Exactly. In this episode, we dug into Hilary Mason's latest endeavor, Hidden Door, and how she and her team are working to apply the right level of "human" to AI-driven narrative play. Intrigued? You should be! It's fascinating! For complete show notes, including links to items mentioned in this episode and a transcript of the show, visit the show page.

#182: Making Better Decisions and Being Useful with Cassie Kozyrkov

2021-12-14 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Cassie Kozyrkov (Google)

Some would say that, given the breadth and depth of data that is available to businesses these days, a surefire path to business value is to load up a department with smart data scientists, task them with developing a solid machine learning strategy, and then execute that strategy. The people who've said that might take issue with this episode. Cassie Kozyrkov joined the show to discuss decision-making: what it is, how we often frame decisions too narrowly, and the different roles data can play to support the process. And much, much more! For complete show notes, including links to items mentioned in this episode and a transcript of the show, visit the show page.

#171: We're Back! Plus: "Cassie's Ideas"

2021-07-13 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Cassie Kozyrkov (Google)

We're baaaaaaack…! Shorter show name, a rebrand, some minor formatting and structural updates, but still "Moe Kiss with a couple of guys who listeners can't keep straight." On this episode, we talk for a little bit about what we've been doing while we were on hiatus and then dive into a topic that only Cassie Kozyrkov has dared to deeply explore before: the distinction between analysts, statisticians, data engineers, ML engineers...and data charlatans. Well, really just the first two. But, Cassie('s content) has made numerous appearances on the show, so it seemed like high time that we dug into some of her ideas. #154: Podcast Movie Club: The Social Dilemma

2020-11-17 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

We didn't want to have a discussion about Netflix's The Social Dilemma, but, somehow, we just felt compelled to do so. It was almost like we had a generally unlikable character from a TV series about advertisers' attempts to manipulate consumer behavior in the 1950s and 1960s transplanted in triplicate into an AI that was optimizing Netflix's reach and engagement by getting us to talk about the movie. OR, it addresses a very real issue (a...dilemma, even?) in an approachable manner that, if you're like us, has alarmed your friends and relatives. It certainly seemed worth a discussion, so we had one about it! For complete show notes, including links to items mentioned in this episode and a transcript of the show, visit the show page.

#129: Data Accuracy and Completeness with Yali Sassoon

2019-12-03 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Yali Sassoon (Snowplow Analytics) , Moe Kiss

How accurate is your data? How accurate is any of our data? If our data is more accurate, will we make better decisions? How MUCH better? Why do the show blurbs of late have so many questions? THAT is a question we can ACCURATELY answer: because the shows grapple with challenging questions! On this episode, Snowplow co-founder Yali Sassoon joined us to chat about the nuts and bolts of data accuracy: the inherent messiness of client-side tracking (but, also, the limitations of server-side tracking), strategies of incrementally improving data accuracy (and the costs therein), and the different types of scenarios where different aspects of data accuracy matter in different ways! Pour yourself a drink (a 2 oz. shot of a fine Scotch will do... which would be 59.1471 ml if you want an accurate and precise metric pour), settle in, and give it a listen! #124: Image-ine What the Analyst Can Do Using Machine Vision with Ali Vanderveld

2019-09-24 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Ali Vanderveld (ShopRunner) , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss

Have you ever noticed that 68.2% of the people who explain machine learning use a "this picture is a cat" example, and another 24.3% use "this picture is a dog?" Is there really a place for machine learning and the world of computer vision (or machine vision, which we have conclusively determined is a synonym) in the real world of digital analytics? The short answer is the go-to answer of every analyst: it depends. On this episode, we sat down with Ali Vanderveld, Director of Data Science at ShopRunner, to chat about some real world applications of computer vision, as well as the many facets and considerations therein! #118: Ethics in AI with Finn Lattimore

2019-07-02 Listen
podcast_episode
Val Kroll , Julie Hoyer , Michael Helbling , Tim Wilson (Analytics Power Hour - Columbus (OH) , Moe Kiss , Finn Lattimore (Gradient Institute)

Did you hear the one about how the AI eliminated cancer? It just wiped out the human race! As machine learning and artificial intelligence are woven more and more into the fabric of our daily lives, we are increasingly seeing that decisions based purely on code require a lot of care to ensure that the code truly behaves as we would like it to. As one high profile example after another demonstrates, this is a tricky challenge. On this episode, Finn Lattimore from Gradient Institute joined the gang to discuss the different dimensions of the challenge!
