Title & Speakers Event

Hello,

It's been a while since our last meetup, but fortunately Santa came early this year for the Berlin FinOps community and brought us another event :-)

We'll have again our special guest Shahar with another exciting session, followed by plenty of time to catch up and reconnect with the rest of the Berlin FinOps community.

There will be drinks and snacks offered by Blocks, our host for the night.

Looking forward to see you all again!

-Cristian and Sascha, the meetup group admins.

Timeline

  • 18:30 - Doors open
  • 19:00 - Opening words and introductions
  • 19:15 - Talk: You Fixed the Waste. Now Fix the Real Problem

Waste removal is just the first layer of cloud optimization. The bigger challenge lies in hidden spend drivers within "healthy" environments—architectural defaults, scaling behaviors, and micro-decisions that quietly shape cost. This interactive session explores how to evolve from one-off cleanup to durable, design-level optimization.

Speaker: Shahar Raz, Raz Tech Strategy

  • 20:15 - Networking

10. Berlin FinOps and Cloud Cost Optimization - 12 Dec 2024

Join us in Edinburgh on 4 December to hear how we can drive sustainable value out of AI and cloud computing while controlling their impact on our environment.

Investment in GenAI is growing like crazy with huge implications for future cloud usage - and the costs and carbon emissions that go with it. Carbon emissions from IT already exceed those from the entire aviation industry. So long as data centres rely on electricity supples from fossil fuels, carbon emissions are set to rise even further unless we take action to limit them.

FinOps and GreenOps offer a well-defined strategic path to better value and lower environmental impact. Join us on 4 December to see how we can get control over what cloud is going to cost us and limit its climate impact.

Hosted by IBM Scotland, this Meetup will look at practical ways we can control how we use cloud to maximise its value to all of us - and our children.

Here's the agenda: 4:00 pm Reception 4:30 pm Introduction & Welcome 4:40 pm Keynote Address 5:00 pm Lightning talks from industry experts 5:45 pm Interactive Breakout Sessions 6:15 pm Informal networking

7. Berlin FinOps and Cloud Cost Optimization - 14 March 2024
The Future of FinOps 2024-01-16 · 17:30

IMPORTANT: You can only register for this event on Eventbrite, here: https://Jan2024LNETM.eventbrite.co.uk/

The FinOps Foundation defines FinOps is defined as an operational framework and cultural practice which maximizes the business value of cloud, enables timely data-driven decision making, and creates financial accountability through collaboration between engineering, finance, and business teams.

It's a well-known secret that Cloud isn’t as cheap as advertised, often with expensive nuances and hidden costs, so FinOps is a very new hot topic right now and there is much opportunity for this practice as it matures.

The January 2024 LNETM will look at the current state of FinOps, how it differs from broader trends such as ITFM, the current state of tooling and how it could evolve to encompass greater value within the strategic IT ecosystem. This will be discussed by a top-quality panel of industry experts, including:

  • Richard Vester (Director of UK/Europe for IOCO Technologies)
  • Pamila Raina (Financial Services Technical Account Lead, Google Cloud Consulting)

Further speakers will be added shortly.

David Harding (CEO of MagicOrange) will provide the positioning and moderate the panel discussion. There will also be two flash talks from innovative companies in the FinOps space:

  • Parabole.ai provides an AI-powered causal inference technology enables data scientists to build accurate decision-support systems that estimate the effect of interventions under real-world data constraints, and imperfect causal knowledge (Jonathan Doan, Head of Sales).
  • Vertice is a spend optimization platform that saves companies up to 25% on their SaaS and cloud costs. It empowers companies of every size and industry to get more visibility and control of their software and cloud spending and leverages automation and machine learning to deliver guaranteed cost savings (Eldar Tuvey, CEO).

Sincere thanks to London Stock Exchange Group for hosting the LNETM, to MagicOrange, as our monthly sponsor and to all of our annual sponsors for 2024.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  1. You must register through Eventbrite in order to attend.
  2. Registration will close 48 hours before the event (on the night of Sunday 14th January).
  3. Please bring photo ID to the event, as it may be required for entry. to the event, as it may be required for entry.

Managing AI Costs and Maximizing ROI

This session begins with data warehouse trivia and lessons learned from production implementations of multicloud data architecture. You will learn to design future-proof low latency data systems that focus on openness and interoperability. You will also gain a gentle introduction to Cloud FinOps principles that can help your organization reduce compute spend and increase efficiency.

Most enterprises today are multicloud. While an assortment of low-code connectors boasts the ability to make data available for analytics in real time, they post long-lasting challenges:

  • Inefficient EDW targets
  • Inability to evolve schema
  • Forbiddingly expensive data exports due to cloud and vendor lock-in

The alternative is an open data lake that unifies batch and streaming workloads. Bronze landing zones in open format eliminate the data extraction costs required by proprietary EDW. Apache Spark™ Structured Streaming provides a unified ingestion interface. Streaming triggers allow us to switch back and forth between batch and stream with one-line code changes. Streaming aggregation enables us to incrementally compute on data that arrives near each other.

Specific examples are given on how to use Autoloader to discover newly arrived data and ensure exactly once, incremental processing. How DLT can be configured effectively to further simplify streaming jobs and accelerate the development cycle. How to apply SWE best practices to Workflows and integrate with popular Git providers, either using the Databricks Project or Databricks Terraform provider.
