Debate over the growth picture continues with global expenditure data through September showing resilience but the labor market a key area of weakness. Whether wealth effects will cushion the coming purchasing power squeeze in the US is unclear. But we maintain that there is a tension in risk markets pricing both resilience and a Fed that returns rates to neutral, with inflation looking sticky absent a more material soft patch in growth.

19:15 - OpenCV Essentials: From Basics to Small Projects, by Irina Nikulina, Senior ML/CV Engineer. Abstract: This presentation offers a practical introduction to OpenCV, one of the most widely used libraries for computer vision in Python. We'll explore essential tools and techniques useful for data scientists and engineers, and walk through two hands-on projects that demonstrate how OpenCV can be applied to real-world visual tasks.

19:45 - Survival Models: Proper Scoring Rule and Stochastic Optimization with Competing Risks, by Julie Alberge, phd Student in SODA team, at inria Paris Saclay. Abstract : When dealing with right-censored data, where some outcomes are missing due to a limited observation period, survival analysis focuses on predicting the time until an event of interest occurs. Multiple classes of outcomes lead to a classification variant: predicting the most likely event, an area known as competing risks.

Here, we present a new strictly proper separable scoring rule to handle competing risks. Then, we propose SurvivalBoost, a gradient boosting trees implemented with the previous loss that outperforms 12 state-of-the-art models across several metrics, both in competing risks and survival settings, and with faster computation times compared to existing methods.

20:15 - No Capes Needed: The Real Superpowers of Women in Tech, by Aurélie Giard-Jacquet, AI practionner and tech podcaster. Abstract: You want to know what a real superpower looks like? It’s not flying. Not invisibility. It’s knowing how to code. Because when you master machine learning, when you understand data science - you don’t just solve problems. You choose which problems are worth solving. You get to decide whether we train models to sell sneakers... or to detect cancer. You get to build tools that empower - not exploit. That’s not soft power. That’s real power. And the world needs more women to claim it.

After an almost five-year hiatus, we're thrilled to relaunch PyData Ann Arbor with an exceptional talk on speech AI using Python!

Talk Context Speech technology is revolutionizing how we interact with computers and automate communication. From voice assistants helping us navigate our daily lives to real-time transcription enabling better accessibility in virtual meetings, speech-to-text (STT) and text-to-speech (TTS) technologies have become fundamental building blocks of modern applications. These technologies power everything from customer service voice agents and automated meeting notes to audiobook creation and voice cloning for content creators.

Join us as we welcome Matthew Lightman, a Senior Machine Learning Engineer from Deepgram, a leader in speech AI technology right here in Ann Arbor. Deepgram has pushed the boundaries of speech recognition accuracy and efficiency, making them a cornerstone of the speech AI ecosystem. Their state-of-the-art models are used by companies worldwide for everything from call center analytics to media subtitle generation.

This talk will dive deep into the fascinating world of training speech models at scale, exploring the unique challenges and considerations that set speech AI apart from traditional language models. Whether you're interested in machine learning, audio processing, or the future of human-computer interaction, you won't want to miss this insightful presentation from one of the leading companies in the field.

Talk abstract: In the last few years, researchers have been able to create effective Large language models (LLMs) through self-supervised training on large quantities of text data from the internet. There are well studied scaling laws for the performance of LLMs as a function of the amount of training data, compute budget, and model size. Similar scaling laws apply in the domain of speech, including speech-to-text and text-to-speech model training. However, there are distinct considerations for training on speech data. For example: How are the ground truth transcripts for the speech produced? How do we make use of noisy versus clean speech? In this talk I will discuss such considerations, and how they impact training of speech-to-text and of text-to-speech models at scale.

P.S. They're hiring!

Greg Fuzesi – guest @ J.P. Morgan Global Research , Nora Szentivanyi – Senior Global Economist , Michael Hanson – guest

Nora Szentivanyi is joined by Greg Fuzesi and Michael Hanson to discuss the key takeaways from our latest Global Inflation Monitor and inflation risks stemming from higher tariffs . While there are reasons to fade elements of the January upside inflation surprise, global core inflation remains stuck at a 3% pace and we have nudged our 1Q25 forecast upward to 3.4%ar. Moreover, headline inflation has firmed to a 3.7%ar over the past three months after a slide to 2.6%ar over the prior six months. Tariffs are likely to add to inflation in the near-term, but medium-term inflation pressures should tilt lower due to the associated drags on sentiment.  Euro area underlying inflation remains on track to moderate to 2% as weak demand looks to be weighing on corporate pricing power, while declining wage inflation fades cost pressures. US inflation appears moderately more sticky and a recent pop in some measures of inflation expectations point to a more gradual pace of disinflation.

Agenda 18:50 arrival to go up to floor 27 in montparnasse tower and ID check --- 19:00 - Launch of the evening by Paris WiMLDS meetup team & Probabl --- 19:15 - Decision by AI in medical context, by Christel Gérardin, MD, PhD, Specialised in Internal Medicine and Automatic Language Processing, Assistant Chief of Clinic.

Abstract: There are now a large number of solutions based on artificial intelligence algorithms in the healthcare sector. However, their implementation in clinical practice is not always guaranteed. The aim of the presentation will be to give several examples of AI algorithms that have been co-constructed from the design phase by multi-disciplinary teams (specialist clinicians, data engineers, developers), and whose performance has been evaluated throughout the development phases.

19:45 - Learning common structures in a collection of networks. An application to food webs, by Sophie Donnet, Directrice de Recherche (Senior researcher) INRAE, Unité MIA Paris Saclay

Abstract : Studying networks in ecology helps uncover the structural patterns underlying ecosystem interactions, shedding light on species roles, resilience, and the organization of biodiversity. In this work with Pierre Barbillon and Saint Clair Chabert Liddell, we analyze collections of networks to identify shared structural patterns and cluster them into homogeneous groups. Using a probabilistic approach (Stochastic Block Model (SBM)) and a variational EM algorithm, we capture common connectivity structures and classify networks effectively. This approach, validated on ecological data, reveals structural homogeneity and key mesoscale patterns across diverse ecosystems. Based on the work https://projecteuclid.org/journals/annals-of-applied-statistics/volume-18/issue-2/Learning-common-structures-in-a-collection-of-networks-An-application/10.1214/23-AOAS1831.short

20:15 - Data in the shadows: How Open-Source Intelligence and Malicious AI can fuel Cybercrime, by Noor Bhatnagar, Senior Cybersecurity Analyst, EMEA @cybelangel

Abstract : Data is everywhere and we interact with it on a regular basis. It is collected, analyzed, and shared at an unprecedented scale. But as much as this data powers insights, it also create new vulnerabilities. For data scientists and anyone handling data, the challenge is not only about building smarter models but also navigating the fine line between secure data use and inadvertent risk. As open-source intelligence (OSINT) becomes more accessible, cybercriminals are finding new ways to exploit publicly available data for malicious purposes. Additionally, the rise of AI-driven tools like WormGPT has given bad actors the power to automate attacks at scale. We will explore two critical ways in which data practices — both innocent and intentional — can contribute to the dark web’s ever-growing ecosystem. --- 20:45 - Cocktail & Networking The cocktail is sponsored by probabl. --- After the meet-up, a summary be available on our Medium page : https://wimlds-paris.medium.com/ --- Code of Conduct WiMLDS & MLOps are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone. Raphael Brun-Aguerre – guest , Nora Szentivanyi – Senior Global Economist

Nora Szentivanyi and Raphael Brun-Aguerre discuss their takeaways from the September CPI reports and how the incoming data are shaping the outlook for global inflation and monetary policy. Global headline inflation eased further to 2.7%oya, aided by falling energy prices––a decline that has supported consumer purchasing power. But core inflation is proving to be sticky around 3% after stepping down from 3.4%ar in 1H24. Services inflation globally continues to run above pre-pandemic norms, even as goods prices have returned to their pre-pandemic inflation rate. However, persistent divergences in both domestic demand and supply are now starting to drive greater variation in inflation outcomes.

The Lineup for the evening

Talk 1: FAir Interpolation Method (FAIM) for Trade-Offs between Mutually Exclusive Algorithmic Fairness Criteria in Machine Learning and Law? Abstract: Ensuring fairness in AI is crucial but challenging, as different fairness criteria often conflict. This talk introduces the FAir Interpolation Method (FAIM), a novel algorithm using optimal transport to balance competing fairness measures, such as ‘calibration within groups’ and ‘balance for the positive/negative class’. FAIM aims to adjust unfair predictions to meet a weighted combination of fairness standards, and its effectiveness is demonstrated with synthetic credit score data, COMPAS data, and e-commerce recommendations. FAIM could help align AI systems with legal standards, including recent EU regulations. Speaker: Alex Loosley is a Responsible AI Scientist and Engineer with experience in developing algorithms for crop protection, document intelligence, and fashion fit recommendations. Outside of his AI work, he referees professional ice hockey in Germany.

Talk 2: AI on a Microbudget - Methods of Machine Learning Miniaturization? Abstract: Current progress in AI has seen remarkable capabilities emerging from simple prediction tasks – if we scale them massively. Surprisingly, we get sparks of reasoning and intelligence in a model that was trained to do little more than masked word prediction. Since that realization the AI field has pursued ever larger models, trained at “eye-watering” cost. If scaling is all you need – does it follow that, in practice, money is all you need? In this talk we explore ideas for the rest of us, the GPU-poor. Taking examples from language processing and computer vision, we’ll show you how to make do with less – less computing power, less person power, less data – while still building powerful models. We will introduce a set of methods and open source tools for the efficient reuse and miniaturization of models, including transfer learning and fine-tuning, knowledge distillation, and model quantization. Our talk aims to provide an overview for ML practitioners, draws from our combined project experience, and is accompanied by a repository of code examples to get you started with building AI on a microbudget. Speaker: Katharina Rasch is a data scientist and computer vision engineer with a PhD in Computer Science from KTH Stockholm. She currently freelances in Berlin and also works as a teacher. Christian Staudt is a data scientist with 8 years of freelance experience. He focuses on machine learning from prototype to deployment, contributes to open source and has organized PyData community events.

Lightning talks There will be slots for 2-3 Lightning Talks (3-5 Minutes for each). Kindly let us know if you would like to present something at the start of the meetup :)
