Fabric-Powered Retail AI: From Data Lakes to $Billion ROI & Personalization

Join Session Here: https://www.youtube.com/live/8_33kHuC6ho?feature=shared

The retail industry is experiencing an unprecedented AI revolution, with academic research publications exploding from just 12 articles in 2000 to over 847 articles in 2023—a staggering 21.3% compound annual growth rate that signals the transformative power of intelligent systems built on modern data platforms. This presentation reveals how leading retailers are leveraging Microsoft Fabric's unified analytics platform to process 150+ customer attributes simultaneously (versus 10-15 in traditional systems), achieving hyperpersonalization that drives 20-30% conversion rate increases and 34% higher click-through rates through context-aware recommendations. Deep learning-based recommendation systems now constitute 68% of retail AI research, with transformer-based architectures like BERT4Rec delivering 23-31% performance improvements when powered by scalable data lakehouse architectures. Drawing from comprehensive analysis across 29 industries and 112 countries, we'll explore why only 10% of companies achieve significant AI ROI—and how Microsoft Fabric's integrated data platform accelerates success for the winners. The presentation will showcase real-world case studies demonstrating inventory optimization with 30-50% forecast accuracy improvements through generative AI models processing 20-50 feature variables in Fabric's lakehouse, operational excellence with logistics firms achieving 28% average productivity gains through real-time analytics, innovation acceleration with 37% average increase in patent applications post-AI adoption, and customer experience enhancement with 75% prediction accuracy enabling real-time personalization across unified data estates. However, success requires more than technology. Research reveals that 70% of AI success stems from organizational factors, with AI leaders investing 73% more in human-AI collaboration training compared to laggards (23%). We'll decode the five critical organizational learning practices that distinguish AI winners from losers, and how Fabric's collaborative workspace enables these practices at scale. This data-driven session combines cutting-edge research insights with practical Microsoft Fabric implementation strategies, addressing both the $billion opportunities and the ethical considerations reshaping retail's future through unified analytics platforms.

Shen Wang – Principal Data Engineer , Mitchell Posluns – Analytics Manager

Governance is difficult for an organization of any size, and many struggle to execute on data management in an efficient manner. At Assurance, the team has utilized Starburst Galaxy to embed ownership within the data mesh framework, completely transforming the way organizations handle data. By granting data owners complete control and visibility over their data, Assurance enables a more nuanced and effective approach to data management. This approach not only fosters a sense of responsibility but also ensures that data is relevant, up-to-date, and aligned with the evolving needs of the organization. In this presentation, Shen Weng and Mitchell Polsons will discuss the strategic implementation of compute ownership in Starburst Galaxy, showing how it empowers teams to identify and resolve issues quickly, significantly improving the uptime of key computing operations. This approach is vital for achieving operational excellence, characterized by enhanced efficiency, reliability, and quality. Additionally, the new data setup has enabled the Assurance team to simplify data transformation processes using dbt and to improve data quality monitoring with Monte Carlo, further streamlining and strengthening our data management practices.

Regardless of profession, the work we do leaves behind a trace of actions that help us achieve our goals. This is especially true for those that work with data. For large enterprises where there are seemingly countless processes happening at any one time, keeping track of these processes is crucial. Given the scale of these processes, one small efficiency gain can leads to a staggering amount of time and money saved. Process mining is a data-driven approach to process analysis that uses event logs to extract process-related information. It can separate inferred facts, from exact truths, and uncover what really happens in a variety of operations.  Wil van der Aalst is a full professor at RWTH Aachen University, leading the Process and Data Science (PADS) group. He is also the Chief Scientist at Celonis, part-time affiliated with the Fraunhofer FIT, and a member of the Board of Governors of Tilburg University.  His research interests include process mining, Petri nets, business process management, workflow management, process modeling, and process analysis. Wil van der Aalst has published over 275 journal papers, 35 books (as author or editor), 630 refereed conference/workshop publications, and 85 book chapters. Cong Yu leads the CeloAI group at Celonis focusing on bringing advanced AI technologies to EMS products, building up capabilities for their knowledge platform, and ultimately helping enterprises in reducing process inefficiencies and achieving operational excellence. Previously, Cong was Principal (Research) Scientist / Research Director at Google Research NYC from September 2010 to July 2022, leading the NYSD/Beacon Research Group, and also taught at NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.  In the episode, Wil, Cong, and Richie explore process mining and its development over the past 25 years, the differences between process mining and ML, AI, and data mining, popular use cases of process mining, adoption from large enterprises like BMW, HP, and Dell, the requirements for an effective process mining system, the role of predictive analytics and data engineering in process mining, how to scale process mining systems, prospects within the field and much more.
