Traditional data warehouses excel at churning through terabytes of data for historical analysis. But for real-time, business-critical use cases, traditional data warehouses can’t produce results fast enough—and they still rack up a huge bill in the process.
So when Ramp’s data engineering team needed to serve complex analytics queries on the critical path of their production application, they knew they needed a new tool for the job. Enter Materialize, the first operational data warehouse. Like a traditional data warehouse, Materialize centralizes the data from all of a business’s production systems, from application databases to SaaS tools. But unlike a traditional data warehouse, Materialize enables taking immediate and automatic action when that data changes. Queries that once took hours or minutes to run are up-to-date in Materialize within seconds.
This talk presents how Ramp is unlocking new real-time use cases using Materialize as their operational data warehouse. The best part? The team still uses dbt for data modeling and deployment management, just like they are able to with their traditional batch workloads.

OurFamilyWizard helps families living separately thrive, empowering parents with needed tools after divorce or separation. Migrating to a modern data stack built on a Databricks Delta Lake seemed like the obvious choice for OurFamilyWizard to start integrating 20 years of on-prem Oracle data with event tracking and SaaS cloud data, but they needed tools to do it. OurFamilyWizard turned to Matillion, a powerful and intuitive solution, to quickly load, combine, and transform source data into reporting tables and data marts, and empower them to turn raw data into information the organization can use to make decisions.
In this session, Beth Mattson, OurFamilyWizard Senior Data Engineer, will detail how Matillion helped OurFamilyWizard migrate their data to Databricks fast and provided end-to-end ETL capabilities. BI applications are undoubtedly one of the major consumers of a data warehouse. Nevertheless, the prospect of accessing data using standard SQL is appealing to many more stakeholders than just the data analysts. We’ve heard from customers that they experience an increasing demand to provide access to data in their lakehouse platforms from external applications beyond BI, such as e-commerce platforms, CRM systems, SaaS applications, or custom data applications developed in-house. These applications require an “always on” experience, which makes Databricks SQL Serverless a great fit.
In this session, we give an overview of the approaches available to application developers to connect to Databricks SQL and create modern data applications tailored to needs of users across an entire organization. We discuss when to choose one of the Databricks native client libraries for languages such as Python, Go, or node.js and when to use the SQL Statement Execution API, the newest addition to the toolset. We also explain when ODBC and JDBC might not be the best for the task and when they are your best friends. Live demos are included.
