💻 Part 2: How Digital Fragments of Optimization Become Abstract Agents A Deep Dive in the “Fragments to Agents” Series In Part 1, we explored how biological and cultural systems turn scattered parts into living, social, and economic agents. In Part 2, we shift focus to the digital and abstract realms, where fragments of optimization and computation give rise to systems that act—sometimes in ways even their designers didn’t anticipate. This session features a substantial presentation followed by deep group discussion. We’ll unpack the central question: How do fragments of digital optimization become abstract agents? From machine learning systems and feedback loops to digital marketplaces and algorithmic trading—how do we draw the line between a tool and an agent? And what happens when optimization processes become powerful enough to behave as if they have goals? We’ll explore topics and questions such as:
This session draws from thinkers such as Alan Turing, Norbert Wiener, Stuart Russell, Melanie Mitchell, John von Neumann, and others in the space of AI alignment, computational emergence, and abstract systems. This event is open to all groups, but the core emphasis will be on questions most relevant to our AI, computation, and systems-focused members. Other lenses—including biological, philosophical, and cultural—will return in future sessions. Format:
Whether you’re curious about optimization, autonomy, agency, or existential risk—this session offers a deep look into one of the most urgent and fascinating transitions in the modern world. |

Unravelling SAAS
2024-09-03 · 16:30
IMPORTANT: You can only register for this event on Eventbrite, here: https://Sept2024LNETM.eventbrite.co.uk/ Despite its ubiquity, the SAAS business model faces headwinds with the challenging business environment, rise in AI-based custom software development and technical issues related to resilience & data privacy. While software service models for software have been around since the 1960’s, Software-as-a-Service really only became a recognised as an industry term in the early 2000’s and has grown in popularity, becoming the main form of software application deployment by 2023. The thesis of this discussion is that many people have forgotten that there is a lot that sits underneath the day-to-day interface of SAAS applications, such as underlying technologies, data infrastructure, pricing strategies, legal frameworks, etc.. and what that actually means for organisations who have grown dependent on this software business model. We have brought together a combination of leading SAAS experts for our discussion, including:
Graham will provide a short talk to position the discussion, which will be moderated by Nathan O'Reilly who is an expert in enterprise transformation. Sincere thanks to LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) for hosting the LNETM and to all our annual sponsors for 2024. IMPORTANT NOTES:

[DataFramed AI Series #2] How Organizations can Leverage ChatGPT
2023-05-09 · 10:00
Noelle Silver Russell
– Global AI Solutions & Generative AI & LLM Industry Lead
@ Accenture
With the advent of any new technology that promises to make humans lives easier, replacing concious actions with automation, there is always backlash. People are often aware of the displacement of jobs, and often, it is viewed in a negative light. But how do we try to change the collective understanding to one of hope and excitement? What use cases can be shared that will change the opinion of those that are weary of AI? Noelle Silver Russell is the Global AI Solutions & Generative AI & LLM Industry Lead at Accenture, responsible for enterprise-scale industry playbooks for generative AI and LLMs. In this episode of our AI series, Noelle discusses how to prioritize ChatGPT use cases by focusing on the different aspects of value creation that GPT models can bring to individuals and organizations. She addresses common misconceptions surrounding ChatGPT and AI in general, emphasizing the importance of understanding their potential benefits and selecting use cases that maximize positive impact, foster innovation, and contribute to job creation. Noelle draws parallels between the fast-moving AI projects today and the launch of Amazon Alexa, which she worked on, and points out that many of the discussions being raised today were also talked about 10 years ago. She discusses how companies can now use AI to focus both on business efficiencies and customer experience, no longer having to settle for a trade-off between the two. Noelle explains the best way for companies to approach adding GPT tools into their processes, which focusses on taking a holistic view to implementation. She also recommends use-cases for companies that are just beginning to use AI, as well as the challenges they might face when deploying models into production, and how they can mitigate them. On the topic of the displacement of jobs, Noelle draws parallels from when Alexa was launched, and how it faced similar criticisms, digging into the fear that people have around new technology, which could be transformed into enthusiasm. Noelle suggests that there is a burden on leadership within organizations to create a culture where people are excited to use AI tools, rather than feeling threatened by them. |

Data science teams looking to turn research into useful analytics applications require not only the right tools, but also the right approach if they’re to succeed. With the revised second edition of this hands-on guide, up-and-coming data scientists will learn how to use the Agile Data Science development methodology to build data applications with Python, Apache Spark, Kafka, and other tools. Author Russell Jurney demonstrates how to compose a data platform for building, deploying, and refining analytics applications with Apache Kafka, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, d3.js, scikit-learn, and Apache Airflow. You’ll learn an iterative approach that lets you quickly change the kind of analysis you’re doing, depending on what the data is telling you. Publish data science work as a web application, and affect meaningful change in your organization. Build value from your data in a series of agile sprints, using the data-value pyramid Extract features for statistical models from a single dataset Visualize data with charts, and expose different aspects through interactive reports Use historical data to predict the future via classification and regression Translate predictions into actions Get feedback from users after each sprint to keep your project on track |

Mining the Social Web with Matthew Russell

Matthew Russell
– CTO
@ Digital Reasoning
,

This week's episode explores the possibilities of extracting novel insights from the many great social web APIs available. Matthew Russell's Mining the Social Web is a fantastic exploration of the tools and methods, and we explore a few related topics. One helpful feature of the book is it's use of a Vagrant virtual machine. Using it, readers can easily reproduce the examples from the book, and there's a short video available that will walk you through setting up the Mining the Social Web virtual machine. The book also has an accompanying github repository which can be found here. A quote from Matthew that particularly reasonates for me was "The first commandment of Data Science is to 'Know thy data'." Take a listen for a little more context around this sage advice. In addition to the book, we also discuss some of the work done by Digital Reasoning where Matthew serves as CTO. One of their products we spend some time discussing is Synthesys, a service that processes unstructured data and delivers knowledge and insight extracted from the data. Some listeners might already be familiar with Digital Reasoning from recent coverage in Fortune Magazine on their cognitive computing efforts. For his benevolent recommendation, Matthew recommends the Hardcore History Podcast, and for his self-serving recommendation, Matthew mentioned that they are currently hiring for Data Science job opportunities at Digital Reasoning if any listeners are looking for new opportunities. |
