With millions of orders per day, Gojek needs a data processing solution that can handle a high volume of data. Airflow is a scalable tool that can handle large volumes of data and complex workflows, making it an ideal solution for Gojek’s needs. Cubing and Metrics in SQL, Oh My!

ABOUT THE TALK Apache Calcite has extended SQL to support metrics (which we call ‘measures’), filter context, and analytic expressions. With these concepts you can define data models (which we call Analytic Views) that contain metrics, use them in queries, and define new metrics in queries.

This talk, hosted by the original developer of Apache Calcite describes the SQL syntax extensions for metrics, and how to use them for cross-dimensional calculations such as period-over-period, percent-of-total, non-additive and semi-additive measures. It details how we got around fundamental limitations in SQL semantics, and approaches for optimizing queries that use metrics.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Julian Hyde is the original developer of Apache Calcite, an open source framework for building data management systems, and Morel, a functional query language. Previously he created Mondrian, an analytics engine, and SQLstream, an engine for continuous queries. He is a staff engineer at Google, where he works on Looker and BigQuery.

The name WALD-stack stems from the four technologies it is composed of, i.e. a cloud-computing Warehouse like Snowflake or Google BigQuery, the open-source data integration engine Airbyte, the open-source full-stack BI platform Lightdash, and the open-source data transformation tool DBT.

Using a Formula 1 Grand Prix dataset, I will give an overview of how these four tools complement each other perfectly for analytics tasks in an ELT approach. You will learn the specific uses of each tool as well as their particular features. My talk is based on a full tutorial, which you can find under waldstack.org.

From Excel to IDE and beyond: The origins and future of the data developer

Data teams aren't only working in Excel and Tableau anymore. We're working in GitHub, VSCode, BigQuery, and our command line. We have the modern data pipeline and we're developing a lot more like engineers...but our development workflows are anything but modern. Why don't we get developer previews? Or the ability to test our changes to anything downstream of dbt? Why do our tools not talk to each other? We believe that analytics engineers deserve better and we want to show you what "better data development" could look like in the modern data pipeline (we promise, it's really nice).
